Who wouldn’t want to sit in front of this fireplace? It was a honed black slate hearth, white tin surround and a reclaimed, old growth pine mantle. The wall behind it is covered in beadboard made from reclaimed timber pine. After tearing down this home's existing addition, we set out to create a new addition with a modern farmhouse feel that still blended seamlessly with the original house. The addition includes a kitchen great room, laundry room and sitting room. Outside, we perfectly aligned the cupola on top of the roof, with the upper story windows and those with the lower windows, giving the addition a clean and crisp look. Using granite from Chester County, mica schist stone and hardy plank siding on the exterior walls helped the addition to blend in seamlessly with the original house. Inside, we customized each new space by paying close attention to the little details. Reclaimed wood for the mantle and shelving, sleek and subtle lighting under the reclaimed shelves, unique wall and floor tile, recessed outlets in the island, walnut trim on the hood, paneled appliances, and repeating materials in a symmetrical way work together to give the interior a sophisticated yet comfortable feel. Entering the back yard is like entering an English garden. To ensure a seamless look between the original new parts of the house, we built the covered patio using the same German schist stone and timber framed stucco. Further, the stone’s pointing matches the original historic stone, and we used a gray grout for a weathered, aged look. The space is finished off with spiraled lattice iron works and all slate roof. At the end of the roof is an open truss timber frame in a cathedral design. Copper flashing at the joints protects the wood from water sitting in the spaces and eventually rotting the joints. The patio itself features a flagstone floor, built in gas grill, and the other side of the Rumford fireplace found in the family room. The high ceiling of this lovely family room is enhanced by architectural mill-work which give this charming room an elegant and cozy feel. We renovated the exterior and installed the hardscaping of the traditional colonial home in Villanova, PA. The flagstone patio has a beautiful hand-crafted pergola made from reclaimed long leaf pine. The outdoor fireplace was constructed out of mica and granite and has two storage areas for wood. The stone retaining wall includes interior lighting. A short walk down an adjoining staircase brings you to a courtyard immediately outside of the basement. The courtyard features the same flagstone, stone retaining wall and interior lighting. Regarding the house itself, we rebuilt the chimney (and the accompanying fireplace inside), added Harding plank cement siding, and built the retaining wall along the driveway. In this transitional farmhouse in West Chester, PA, we renovated the kitchen and family room, and installed new flooring and custom millwork throughout the entire first floor. This chic tuxedo kitchen has white cabinetry, white quartz counters, a black island, soft gold/honed gold pulls and a French door wall oven. The family room’s built in shelving provides extra storage. The shiplap accent wall creates a focal point around the white Carrera marble surround fireplace. The first floor features 8-in reclaimed white oak flooring (which matches the open shelving in the kitchen!) that ties the main living areas together. The den was already cozy and inviting. But we spruced it up by installing red oak floor, adding wainscoting and painting the fireplace surround and mantle white to help the fireplace pop. We tore down the walls between four rooms to create this great room in Villanova, PA. And what a difference it makes! This bright space is perfect for everyday living and entertaining family and friends as the kitchen, eating and living areas flow seamlessly. With red oak flooring throughout, we used white and light gray materials and crown moulding to give this large space a cohesive yet open feel. We added wainscoting to the steel post columns. Other projects in this house included installing red oak flooring throughout the first floor, refinishing the main staircase, building new stairs into the basement, installing new basement flooring and opening the basement rooms to create another entertainment area.
