This 2017 Project begins with a wonderful Palo Alto family of four wanted to get more use of their backyard. Their existing backyard had served its purpose for many years when their children were young. Now their children in college, it was underused and in desperate need of an update. Having lived in their home for 19 years, my clients communicated clearly with goals to take advantage of the reason they moved to Palo Alto in the first place. Both desire spending more time for themselves enjoying our year round climate in Northern California. By initially addressing the specific request to decrease the water usage and the accompanying utility bills, objective for addition of a fire pit to the existing spa destination; both sharing their spaces for also a new destination of the turf for the husband, and avid golfer. John had always wanted to practice in his own backyard. Viola! The perfect place to entertain, dine, relax and play! NO RESERVATIONS REQUIRED! A very comfortable, attractive and inviting new outdoor living room has been created! Welcome Home!

With dreams of a modern master bathroom dancing in their heads, Thomas & Meghan hired us to help them with their remodel. They had a well-defined vision for their ideal space and aimed to incorporate their unique style. Their search for a reputable company with a dedication to quality work, clear communication, and transparency was met with great success upon collaborating with our team. The sliding mirror closet doors were removed and new shaker french doors were installed for their closet. Their dated vanity cabinets were replaced by Sollid Shaker Dove White Cabinets with Cambria Carrick Quartz Countertops. The modern and elegant vibe of the vanity section is elevated with the matte black accents of Jeffrey Alexander Boswell Cabinet Handles, Streamline Rounded Edge Wall Mirrors, and Delta Trinsic Widespread Faucets. They had a specific wishlist which consisted of a walk-in shower with tile that reaches the ceiling, featuring a wall that combines two different tiles, a distinctive wall niche, and a frameless glass enclosure. The combination of the free-standing tub, elongated niche, and matte black fixtures is a stunning centerpiece that immediately catches the eye.

This home is located in an area of Little Rock we call the upper heights by the Little Rock Country Club. What was difficult about this project, was it had been under construction for one year. The house roof was installed and the rough-in framing almost complete. On a nice spring day, I just happened to see the builder Jack Hartsell in the front yard. We have worked together on several projects and I inquired as to the status of the interior lighting design. Jack informed me the lighting plans had not been finalized. Jack gave me the architectural firm's name, Lindsey Yeary Architects in Little Rock. I have worked with the firm before but not with this architect, Carolyn Lindsey. We met and she introduced me to the owner who has a vast art collection that they rotate. In review of my lighting design portfolio with my focus on art lighting I was hired. Now the lighting design became the project priority. The builder was a month away from needing recessed can lighting housings and I had to produce the lighting plans, with lighting specifications, in two weeks. I met their schedule, lighting was ordered. To accent art, furnishings and architectural features, the recessed lighting distance placement from the wall is critical. All good lighting designers show in their lighting plans the recessed cans measurements from the walls. This helps the electricians know exactly where to place the art accent lighting. Once the house is completed, the recessed cans cannot be relocated without creating a mess and extra cost. I worked with the architect to re-layout the dining room coffered ceiling placement in order to place the lighting according to my lighting plan. All the recessed cans featured ceiling trims with a four inch diameter opening, rotated 360 degrees and a forty-five degree vertical adjustability. Recessed can fixtures must have the ability to adjust. it is the key to accent lighting. This was the typical lighting approach for all the rooms in the house with art. Relationship: Client Project Date: March 2014 Project Price Range: more than $100,000 Having purchased our first house in Valley Glen, North Hollywood, we were aware it was in need of serious remodeling. A 1950s Ranch-style home, it came complete with peeling wallpaper, musty carpeting, and even some dilapidated walls. As first-time homeowners we were prepared to spend more money to improve it, but weary when we began meeting contractors. Buyer’s remorse already set in when we interviewed several contractors who were either aloof or unscrupulous. Then we were fortunate enough to find Mike Ross. He immediately allayed our stress with his professional and forthright demeanor and his integrity was as rock solid from the day we met him through the several months it took to complete our large renovation. While we had some specific things we wanted in our house, Mike and his team took our wish list and far exceeded our expectations to help truly realize the vision of our dream. Originally a three-bedroom, fourteen-hundred square foot home, our remodel brought an addition of a thousand square feet as well as an overhaul of the landscape; this prospect was particularly daunting for uninitiated owners such as us, but Mike’s consummate professionalism shone through and made the task exponentially less stressful for us. As well as a new 850 sf Master Bedroom, including a fireplace, and a steam unit in the bath, we added a cozy home theater room, laundry room, and the once forgotten backyard brought a new deck and patio with a trellis. Furthermore, because we went green and made it a smart home, we’re already more energy efficient. In several rooms, as well as the main hallway, for example, Mike installed solar tubes and the amount of natural light that bathes the house is amazing. Even my mom, when she came to visit, was always looking for a light-switch. As our contractor, Mike Ross took the reins to steer the project and keep it on course and he did so exceptionally. Mike and his team were as attentive to the quality of every nook and corner and he always sought our approval and happiness. Consistently communicative, he always kept us in the loop about progress and was always there to answer any questions and concerns. When an unforeseen contingency did arise, Mike assuaged our concerns by taking action ASAP to rectify the problem. Mike’s team, too, all take pleasure in their efforts. An eclectic group of skilled artisans and craftsmen, they are all polite, punctual, and proud of their work. Nancy Knickerbocker of Reico Kitchen & Bath in Southern Pines, NC, collaborated with Tod Reid to design a transitional-style kitchen featuring Merillat Autograph and Masterpiece cabinetry. The perimeter cabinets are Merillat Autograph in the Bayard door style in Warm White, while the island features Masterpiece cabinetry in the Bolton door style in Rainfall. The kitchen also includes MSI Q Calacatta Laza countertops, 8x8 Angela Harris Florista Leave backsplash tile from Tile Inc. and KitchenAid range with downdraft, dishwasher and refrigerator. The client shared, “My experience with Reico was very pleasant from the start. Nancy was proficient and knowledgeable. Her timeline went as planned, and she presented several design options while adjusting to my preferences. Her attention to detail paid off—she found the perfect backsplash to complement my kitchen and home. Nancy also communicated well with my contractor. He appreciated the organized binder she prepared, which clearly laid out all the plans and specifications. The project went smoothly, and now I have a more efficient kitchen that has become the focal point of my home. I’m confident we’ll enjoy it for years to come.” Nancy explained, “The homeowners were ready for a change. We kept the same layout but updated the cabinetry, countertops, and appliances. We also installed large 12x24 floor tile. Because the home has an open floor plan, we needed the kitchen to blend with the rest of the space. The Warm White perimeter cabinets keep things bright, while the Rainfall island adds a pop of color. Kathy Moore from Reico Kitchen & Bath in King of Prussia, PA, worked with Belfry Construction to design a transitional kitchen featuring Merillat Autograph cabinets. The perimeter cabinets are in the Bayard door style with a Warm White finish, while the island has an Evergreen finish, paired with Q4076 Verde Peake countertops. The remodel also includes Daltile 3x12 Aloe Rectangle and 1x6 Drift Straight Joint backsplash tiles, along with Frigidaire appliances. The client said, “We love the extra counter space, storage, and modern look. Kathy was key to the project’s success because she considered every detail in the design. Her top suggestion was the utensil storage cabinet. Our favorite feature is the drawer microwave, which makes the area more user-friendly. We also moved the basement door to the dining room to add a corner cabinet and create a larger work area.” Kathy shared, “The kitchen needed more storage and better functionality. The biggest challenge was designing within the existing space since it was original and the clients had specific tastes. Moving the door allowed for more cabinets. The Bunker House is a two-story house with a bomb shelter in the basement. A bunker house is a two-story residential building with a basement bomb shelter. In a short time, we had to equip the basement, master the "two walls" principle and properly seal the windows to protect ourselves and our family from the impact of the shock wave. Our priorities have changed when choosing a home - proximity to the city center or transportation hubs no longer matters. Moreover, SENCE ARCHITECTS also took care of other safety aspects. According to the rules, the storage has two distributed exits outside, each with light "hints" of the direction of evacuation. The basement area is sealed and equipped with a double ventilation system. This is a zone of guaranteed protection against missile attacks, poisonous or radioactive substances, combustion products, and bacteriological weapons. The first mode works on air recovery, providing a fresh flow of it in the absence of heat loss. The second is carried out by a filter ventilation unit — it cleans the outside air, and then distributes it to the compartments and creates excess pressure. Thus, contaminated air will not penetrate inside even through small cracks in protective structures. CONCEPTUAL SOLUTION The structures of the building itself are made of strong reinforced concrete — this way SENCE ARCHITECTS suggests abandoning "glass" facades. The number of windows has also been reduced: they will have a protective anti-shock film, and in case of an explosive wave, they will be closed with reinforced shutters made of fire-resistant plywood. At the entrance to the house and bomb shelter, armored doors are installed. Water is supplied from its own artesian well, electricity — from its own diesel power plant. This means that possible damage to infrastructure facilities will not affect the lives of residents in any way. The house is equipped with modern types of radio- and telephone communication, and satellite Internet, which will work even in the bomb shelter. The signaling and air-raid alert systems are to be installed too. The systems are powered autonomously and have backup channels. Overall, given its specificity, the house is designed for a family of 4-5 people. Size / 733 sq.m. Year / 2022
