Free Float is a pool house that continues UP's obsession with contextual contradiction. Located on a three acre estate in Sands Point NY, the modern pool house is juxtaposed against the existing traditional home. Using structural gymnastics, a column-free, simple shading area was created to protect occupants from the summer sun while still allowing the structure to feel light and open, maintaining views of the Long Island Sound and surrounding beaches. These two groundcovers mingle really well at the front of the border. The Sedum Ogon has an almost chartreuse leaf color. The Campanula Birch's Hybrid blooms for a long time in summer and then reblooms if you cut off the spent heads. They're both evergreen in Seattle. Kate Martin Design

We went for lots of texture and foliage color in this small space. Ferns hold the composition together while the Persian Ivy, Rhododendron, Hosta and Heuchera provide color and leaf variation. This planting is partially under a deck.
