Beautiful steps up the side of the home are flanked by textural shrubs, succulents and boulders.
This active family needed to overhaul this large property but didn't know where to start. "It's like three acres of boring dirt and weeds", said my client. The steeply sloped property did indeed present unique challenges with ever-present voracious deer, the need for erosion control and bank stabilization, large areas that required planting while still considering water conservation, and the need for beautification and modernization to tie into the aesthetic of the newly renovated home. Concurrently, safety and access to all parts of the property were a consideration. Landscaping goals were accomplished through careful plant selection and judicious use of retaining walls in various styles throughout the property. Generous railroad tie steps were used on sloping side yards. The landscaped portions converge gracefully with the existing oak woodland. Children can play and hide in many fun spots, while my client's elderly grandmother can safely walk around.

Georgia Coast Design & Construction - Southern Living Custom Builder Showcase Home at St. Simons Island, GA
Built on a one-acre, lakefront lot on the north end of St. Simons Island, the Southern Living Custom Builder Showcase Home is characterized as Old World European featuring exterior finishes of Mosstown brick and Old World stucco, Weathered Wood colored designer shingles, cypress beam accents and a handcrafted Mahogany door.
Inside the three-bedroom, 2,400-square-foot showcase home, Old World rustic and modern European style blend with high craftsmanship to create a sense of timeless quality, stability, and tranquility. Behind the scenes, energy efficient technologies combine with low maintenance materials to create a home that is economical to maintain for years to come. The home's open floor plan offers a dining room/kitchen/great room combination with an easy flow for entertaining or family interaction. The interior features arched doorways, textured walls and distressed hickory floors.

The wagon wheel and axle has been restored and we welded the square metal on the bottom of the wheel to stabilize the table. The top is made from circa 1840 reclaimed pine floor joists.

Like most kitchens, this basement bar kitchenette was all about the materials. Making the right selections is critical to a project's success, especially a kitchen, so how does that work?
To make sure we get the selections right, we follow a plan, or more accurately, a selection sequence, that ensures we make the right selections in the right order.
For kitchens and bathrooms, material selections follow a simple cadence - one, two, three. First countertops and tile, then plumbing fixtures, and, finally, hardware and accessories.
So, why countertops and tile first?
Simple, they have the greatest impact on the look, color, and mood of a room, and, much like the foundation, they are critical to the stability of a house. Selecting the right countertops (and corresponding tile) is critical to the aesthetic stability of a space.
In our three step process, the selection of countertops is intricately linked to the selection of tile. Yes, we begin with the countertops, but tile selection is only a half step behind. The two materials work in tandem given their proximity to each other ( often they actually touch each other).
Another consideration is selection flexibility. There are literally hundreds of thousands of tile options, making it easier to find the right tile to match the chosen countertops than it is to find countertops to match a specific tile.
To the cool and creamy quartzite countertop, we added a dark, rich counterpart - walnut. The elevated countertop, the one where friends sit and upon which drinks are set is warm and welcoming.

Idaho Boat Docks - Floating Docks
Boat docks are the newest addition to the Butte family of maintenance free products. Boat docks are offered in two different styles. Traditional construction uses an ACE float, pressure treated wood substructure, and a maintenance free composite top. ACE floats have foam cores encased by hard plastic and are approved by the Army Corp of Engineers.
ACE floats have a 15 year warranty. The wood substructure is assembled using galvanized steel corners and angles. All bolts are metal to metal connections.
Butte Fence also Carries the Connect-A-Dock System
CAD docks are pre molded floats with a simple and effective connecting system. This design allows dock owners to change or add to their dock with little effort. This is the ideal dock for dock owners who do their own winterizing or need to move their dock with changing water heights.
Aluminum Gangways Docks
Gangways are generally aluminum frames with a Thru-Flow top. These provide a durable but lightweight approach to your dock. Gangways can also have aluminum handrails and can be made ADA compliant. Though Butte Fence does stock some standard gangway lengths, most are custom built to the length and width specification for each boat dock.
Butte Fence can install your boat dock, deliver your boat dock for you to install, or you can pick up your boat dock at either of our facilities. For those who would like to build their own dock, Butte Fence stocks all the hardware necessary for your project.

Basement Bar Dream Realized! Our clients can entertain guests and family members in this modern space by getting behind the beautiful two-level full bar with shaker style front panels and create any drink recipe - both new and the old favorites - secretly. Guests can climb into the comfortable leather bar-stool-style chairs at the bar's 42" height and clearly see the stone accent wall with mounted cabinets and open thick-glass shelving but not the drinks being prepared by the host. They can relax and lean on the glossy white and gray quartz counter top while casually enjoying the present company. The strategically placed lighting under the bar and in the wall-mounted black painted cabinets, along with the recessed lights and decorative hanging light fixtures, help the space to feel light and cozy. The additional of light neutral paints with dark accents help to stabilize the mood - not to mention the vinyl light wood-styled flooring found throughout the basement.

Encompassing a range of baluster rails, newel posts and complementary decorative accessories, Outwater's new, maintenance free Cast Stone Balustrade System is manufactured utilizing a unique process that combines a mixture of resins with crushed limestone and impregnated fade resistant textured colors to create balustrades that look and feel just like authentic limestone balusters at less than half of their cost and weight.
Intended for indoor or outdoor applications, which can be assembled by laypeople using traditional carpentry tools without the need for masonry, Outwater's Cast Stone Balustrade System meets the 4-inch sphere code when properly set up, and can be placed on sized dimensional lumber without the need for steel supports.
Moreover, unlike lesser quality balustrade systems, which use regular screws to attach their components, also taking into account that the screws' imminent corrosion renders them as an unsafe means by which to attach baluster rails, Outwater's Cast Stone Balustrade System employs a unique incorporated pipe system, connector pins and spacers to increase the Balustrade System's stability while allowing for a more secure and professional installation with barely perceptible seams.
Offered in 34-in. and 48-in. overall heights with a nominal 7-in rail width, baluster rails are sold by the foot up to 16-ft. long to accommodate most any installation.
100% mold resistant, non-porous and unaffected by the harshest elements, Outwater's Cast Stone Balustrade System does not require priming, painting or even occasional touch ups, further enhancing its appeal.

A rustic & careworn gazebo is resurrected as an outdoor cooking, dining & living space. At 1,000' above the waters of the San Juan Islands, the views are amazing but the winds are almost constant. Sliding wood panels in the windward direction solve that problem while offering views of Canada's Gulf Islands through the diamond-shaped windows. Rustic knee braces stabilize the structure. Madrona wood branches gleaned from the property are fashioned into custom handles on the barn wood cabinetry.

New home constructed on a downtown hillside with spectacular views to the north. Merge studio designed the parking court, approach to the front entry and terraced hillside gardens. Stepped board-formed concrete retaining walls provide slope stabilization and a generous sweeping entry stairway. In order to keep stormwater from running onto the neighboring properties, drainage swales with catchment basins were created to slow, sink and spread rainwater on site. Plantings were chosen to provide wildlife habitat and support pollinators while accentuating the scale and depth of the homeowner's experience. Photos by Ramsay Photography
