This backyard paradise began with a muddy site, with all the grading sloping directly to the proposed poolside patio. The design for this outdoor living area would need to incorporate many challenges: * The grading issues would be corrected with retaining walls, which would create a warm yet expansive area and provide additional seating. * The pillars would require careful notching to insert the hardware for the pool gate. * The patio would need to incorporate stormwater storage underneath. * The edge of the poolside patio would require stabilization to prevent future settlement adjacent to the concrete pool deck.

This is the same hillside after installation took place. It includes a natural boulder retaining wall, landscaping to stabilize the slope preventing erosion, a water feature , and path leading up the hill to a viewing and resting place.

Distributed by Timspec, Accoya was used chosen as the ideal material to clad a show home in Auckland. Accoya was selected for the black coated weatherboards on the front section of the house, due to its durability and stability benefits. Because of Accoya’s modification technique it is the ideal wood for external cladding such as this. Generally, problems can occur with darker coatings on cladding, due to shrink and swell being exasperated by the solar gain. But, Accoya wood’s superior dimensional stability negates this problem and maintenance intervals are dramatically extended. The cladding needed to be aesthetically pleasing as well as highly durable in order to withstand the extreme climates in New Zealand. Accoya was also chosen due to its rot resistant benefits and its ability to deter insects in these types of environments.

The recent restoration of Giant View was guided by a singular principle: preserve and strengthen the spirit, craftsmanship, and mountain character of the original camp for future generations. The renovation was approached as an act of stewardship. We invested extensively in professional arboricultural care to protect the long-term health of the immediate forest. A new engineered septic system was carefully designed to work with the site's natural topography and setting. Existing retaining structures were stabilized using approaches intended to preserve the natural appearance of the setting. Exterior lighting was designed to be fully Dark Sky compliant. The client wanted to reduce the amount of sod in their front yard. We removed the grass and some soil to put DG with stabilizer down compacted the DG then installed the flagstone over the DG. We used the same DG for the joints. The client wanted a 1/2 heart planter next to the driveway so soften the flagstone.

The builder wanted a wall built here to hold in this grade change. Bringing in deep rooted plants provided interest, natural habitat and beauty for both the home owner and next door neighbor. Boulders were placed within the bank to move the water in a serpentine pattern to slow down erosion. The small walkway provides a channel for heavy rains to make their way to the lake and stay out of the neighbors yard.
