This Edina, MN project started when the client’s contacted me about their desire to create a family friendly entertaining space as well as a great place to entertain friends. The site amenities that were incorporated into the landscape design-build include a swimming pool, hot tub, outdoor dining space with grill/kitchen/bar combo, a mortared stone wood burning fireplace, and a pool house. The house was built in 2015 and the rear yard was left essentially as a clean slate. Existing construction consisted of a covered screen porch with screens opening out to another covered space. Both were built with the floor constructed of composite decking (low lying deck, one step off to grade). The deck also wrapped over to doorways out of the kitchenette & dining room. This open amount of deck space allowed us to reconsider the furnishings for dining and how we could incorporate the bar and outdoor kitchen. We incorporated a self-contained spa within the deck to keep it closer to the house for winter use. It is surrounded by a raised masonry seating wall for “hiding” the spa and comfort for access. The deck was dis-assembled as needed to accommodate the masonry for the spa surround, bar, outdoor kitchen & re-built for a finished look as it attached back to the masonry. The layout of the 20’x48’ swimming pool was determined in order to accommodate the custom pool house & rear/side yard setbacks. The client wanted to create ample space for chaise loungers & umbrellas as well as a nice seating space for the custom wood burning fireplace. Raised masonry walls are used to define these areas and give a sense of space. The pool house is constructed in line with the swimming pool on the deep/far end. The swimming pool was installed with a concrete subdeck to allow for a custom stone coping on the pool edge. The patio material and coping are made out of 24”x36” Ardeo Limestone. 12”x24” Ardeo Limestone is used as veneer for the masonry items. The fireplace is a main focal point, so we decided to use a different veneer than the other masonry areas so it could stand out a bit more. The clients have been enjoying all of the new additions to their dreamy coastal backyard. All of the elements flow together nicely and entertaining family and friends couldn’t be easier in this beautifully remodeled space.

The design was developed to minimize construction costs, minimize City of Portland building compliance costs and restrictions, and to avoid a county tax assessment increase based on site improvements. This project started with the design premise of maximizing the mountain view in combination with utilizing low maintenance and contrasting materials. Orr Concrete was selected as the builder due to technical and planned concrete work. A select grade of Pika-Pika with brown oil finish was chosen for good texture variety and to blend in with the setting.

This space is unbearably unrecognizable from where it started. Let’s just say we rebuilt 99.98% of it including framing in 2 decks (yes, outdoor decks) to nearly double the living room space, opening up 7 walls to unify 6 different rooms, leveling 4 different floor heights, all new exterior walls, a new roof over the kitchen and dining spaces, all new doors and windows and flipping the staircase around so we could create an entry closet. Our speciality is seeing something beautiful underneath the awful, and that was exactly the case with this project. And of course there’s our signature layering and texturing around the entire space. From the hand-troweled cement floor, bench and back wall tv and wood-burning stove area to the white wood clad walls and ceilings, to the reclaimed hardwoods milled into flooring, every inch is oozing with architectural interest. We made our own doors so that the wood paneling lines up from the walls to the doors and so that the doors nearly disappear creating a simplicity to the space. The windows have reclaimed wood headers to bring in another textural layer and warmth. The custom staircase has beamed treads and built-in storage underneath using the same custom-built doors that pop open with a quick push. And of course we kept the furnishings simple. Lots of leather and hides for the Nordic touch and cozying up to the new wood-burning stove in the harsh northern winters. And the colors are simple. Everything dances from whites to caramels to black with the only pop of color being a deep red in the various vintage rugs, and some live greenery. The space is modern and minimal but still warm and is the ultimate family-friendly space full of our signature vintage, lived-in aesthetic.

At this residence, the owner wanted a large outdoor living/gathering/party space. An outdoor kitchen with built in grill and granite counter tops rests at the bottom of her screen porch stairs and outside of the basement bar. This patio steps down to a larger living area patio with a grand wood burning fireplace. This space will eventually accommodate a large timber-frame pavilion. A massive water feature starts at the top of the hill near the driveway and winds its way down the slope along the length of the house, ending near the outdoor kitchen patio. The stream is flanked by flowering shrubs and perennials and is bridged by a huge stone slab and stepper path.

With this project we started by removing the homes original Pre-Fab wood burning fire box. Then installed a new Kozy Slayton 42S linear fireplace. The framing was built according to the specs of the fireplace and finished with stacked stone and a mantel. This unit has fire beads and driftwood media with a nickel surround.

This DIY fireplace (Douglas design) was built by a homeowner. The finishing touches are being made including firebrick, seating, and some landscaping. What a great backyard destination.

The original character of the space was retained with the use of wood furniture, leather director's chairs and a gallery wall full of family pictures. We changed the layout by replacing the old couch & love seat with a comfortable grey sectional sofa, flanked by a console table at the back, that helped to visually extend the entry way.
