The owners of this classic “old-growth Oak trim-work and arches” 1½ story 2 BR Tudor were looking to increase the size and functionality of their first-floor bath. Their wish list included a walk-in steam shower, tiled floors and walls. They wanted to incorporate those arches where possible – a style echoed throughout the home. They also were looking for a way for someone using a wheelchair to easily access the room. The project began by taking the former bath down to the studs and removing part of the east wall. Space was created by relocating a portion of a closet in the adjacent bedroom and part of a linen closet located in the hallway. Moving the commode and a new cabinet into the newly created space creates an illusion of a much larger bath and showcases the shower. The linen closet was converted into a shallow medicine cabinet accessed using the existing linen closet door. The door to the bath itself was enlarged, and a pocket door installed to enhance traffic flow. The walk-in steam shower uses a large glass door that opens in or out. The steam generator is in the basement below, saving space. The tiled shower floor is crafted with sliced earth pebbles mosaic tiling. Coy fish are incorporated in the design surrounding the drain. Shower walls and vanity area ceilings are constructed with 3” X 6” Kyle Subway tile in dark green. The light from the two bright windows plays off the surface of the Subway tile is an added feature. The remaining bath floor is made 2” X 2” ceramic tile, surrounded with more of the pebble tiling found in the shower and trying the two rooms together. The right choice of grout is the final design touch for this beautiful floor. The new vanity is located where the original tub had been, repeating the arch as a key design feature. The Vanity features a granite countertop and large under-mounted sink with brushed nickel fixtures. The white vanity cabinet features two sets of large drawers. The untiled walls feature a custom wallpaper of Henri Rousseau’s “The Equatorial Jungle, 1909,” featured in the national gallery of art. https://www.nga.gov/collection/art-object-page.46688.html The owners are delighted in the results. Guided by existing Japanese & mid-century elements of their home, the materials and rhythm were chosen to contribute to a contemplative and relaxing environment. One of the major upgrades was incorporating a steam shower to lend to their spa experience. Existing dark, drab cabinets that protruded into the room too deep, were replaced with a custom, white oak slatted vanity & matching linen cabinet. The lighter wood & the additional few inches gained in the walkway opened the space up visually & physically. The slatted rhythm provided visual interest through texture & depth. Custom concrete countertops with integrated, ramp sinks were selected for their wabi-sabi, textural quality & ability to have a single-material, seamless transition from countertop to sink basin with no presence of a traditional drain. The darker grey color was chosen to contrast with the cabinets but also to recede from the darker patination of the backsplash tile & matched to the grout. A pop of color highlights the backsplash pulling green from the canopy of trees seen out the window. The tile offers subtle texture & pattern reminiscent of a raked, zen, sand garden (karesansui gardens). XL format tile in a warm, sandy tone with stone effect was selected for all floor & shower wall tiles, minimizing grout lines. A deeper, textured tile accents the back shower wall, highlighted with wall-wash recessed lighting.

They also wanted to update the corner bath with an elegant free-standing soaker tub. The heated floor adds to the luxurious spa experience. A colour palette of white with calming neutral greys and the bright and elegant cabinetry creates an inviting and contemporary bathroom. Materials used: Steam Shower Thermasol and Therma Touch systems controlled by Alexa, Google, Chromotherapy Lighting, waterproof Kohler speakers, Bluetooth Sound, Custom white vanity, Custom Quartz counter and undermount sink, Super-clear glass with Clarvista treatment for Shower glass, wall-mounted Toto toilet, 12 x 24 dark grey porcelain floor tiles, 12 x 24 imitation-marble porcelain wall shower tiles, heated floor, free standing bath, Riobel plumbing fixtures, rain shower head and shower with handheld wand, linear drain, curbless shower floor.

In this Spa Bath Siteline frameless flat panel Cantor door style in Walnut finish cabinetry was installed. The countertop on the vanity is Solid Surface Hi-Macs Terni with 6” high backsplash. In the shower is MSI Hazelwood quartz on the bench top, curb top and niche shelf. Radiance LED lighted mirror. Brizo Virage faucet in chrome finish and Pulse Power Shot Shower System showerhead and handheld in chrome. Moen Voss collection accessories in chrome include towel bar, towel ring, robe hooks, toilet paper holder, toilet tank lever. A Kohler Cimmaron white comfort ht toilet. Thermosol Steam Unit components: Generator, square steam head, square microtouch control in chrome. 3/8” heavy clear glass steam shower enclosure. The shower tile is 11x23 Contessa Oro Polish wall tile; 1x2 Keystone Urban Putty Speckle for shower floor and ceiling. The flooring is 12x24 Contess Oro matte finish tile.
