Our new step layout is much more deliberate. Dimensions allow for smooth and easy strides, and the landings have a slight grade to allow for 2 fewer steps overall. We replaced the small pavers at the base of the planting beds with an extended step that functions as a little retaining wall. This also proved a place for our client to feature selected garden accessories.

The continued motif of neatly trimmed hedges, coupled by the rounded boxwood marking the corner, provides the perfect definition and backdrop to the fluffy mounds of color in front. It keeps the space neat and gives it a flexible formality which both keeps in stride with the Colonial style and allows for the rainbows of color to sparkle. The foreground vs. background hedges delineate the space and offer the viewer a gracious long view.

A custom tiled pool strides the back of this Palm Beach villa. Along with lush greenery, lounge chairs straddle the sides. Gray pavers lead up to the pool.

This cozy setting looks great and takes abuse in stride! The oversized coffee table made from reclaimed wood has been sealed against moisture and is a workhorse for entertaining, play, and relaxation! Shutters manage the light, and sliding glass doors open fully to an adjacent open-air lanai. The custom built-in cabinetry house the AV equipment, and draw the eye to displays that ascend to full height of the 20 foot ceilings.

We took all this in stride, and configured the washer and dryer, with a little fancy detailing to fit them into the tight space. We were able to provide access to the rear of the units for installation and venting while still enclosing them for a seamless integration into the room. Next to the “laundry room” we put the closet. The wardrobe is deep enough to accommodate hanging clothes, with room for adjustable shelves for folded items. Additional shelves were installed to the left of the wardrobe, making efficient use of the space between the window and the wardrobe, while allowing maximum light into the room. On the far right, tucked under the spiral staircase, we put the “mudroom.” Here the homeowner can store dog treats and leashes, hats and umbrellas, sunscreen and sunglasses, in handy pull-out bins.

Aesthetic Value: The designer wanted a nautical themed stair that fit a small space and gave the area a more open feel than the original outdated stair. Mirror polished stainless steel and Honduran Mahogany accomplished the objectives. Stair Safety: Each tread is skewed but careful layout provided for a very comfortable stride when traversing the stair. Quality of Workmanship: Solid Honduran Mahogany treads and rail. Horizontal bar balustrade and custom machined posts are mirror polished stainless steel. Technical Challenge: Providing a structure that was freestanding on one side of the lower portion and completely freestanding on the upper portion. Laying out the stair to fit the small well hole and still feel comfortable.
