REGIONAL + URBAN DESIGN: Honor Award PROJECT: Upper Lawrenceville Community Visioning CLIENT: Lawrenceville Corporation, Matt Galluzo, Executive Director ARCHITECTURE FIRM: evolveEA DESCRIPTION: This Strategy Study was the first significant planning effort dedicated solely to Upper Lawrenceville, or the 10th Ward. Through a series of community charrettes, a neighborhood identity was created, along with a series of principles that would help prioritize future development to suit the community’s long term livability goals. Three themes were established – Upper Lawrenceville as an affordable and authentic place to live, a place where people make (and grow) things, and recreational amenities that attract visitors who are inclined to stay as residents – and from those themes, six programs were identified that would be essential to create a place where people wanted to live, work, and play. JURY COMMENTS: This study is a really comprehensive look at the existing residential fabric with a strong point of view towards handling growth. It is very well presented, attuned to the existing scale, and very sensitive to the needs of existing residents.

Master Bedroom and Retreat. San Diego Interior Designer, Rebecca Robeson, designed this end of the long and narrow Bedroom to be a place her clients would look forward to coming home to. A pair of chaise lounges separated by a glass-top oval coffee table, faces the flat screen television above the fireplace. Fireplace wall is covered in porcelain wave tile... flanked by modern glass balls of light hanging at random lengths. Custom cabinetry houses the television components and some comfy throw blankets. On the opposite end of the room... The Bedroom. The king size bed with pair of nightstands, created a strong but soothing focal point. Rebecca added the needed softness with luxury bedding, and dreamy window treatments hung from a dark rod to compliment the pair of mirrors on either side of the bed. A decorative mirror in the center and you have perfect symmetry! Inspiration for an eclectic kitchen remodel in Santa Barbara

CAPITAL DESIGN: Ionic Order (Roman) - Scamozzi Capital CAPITAL MATERIAL: PolyStone® Fiberglass Composite CAPITAL SIZE: 10" x 4-7/8" x 16-3/8" PROJECT LOCATION: New Haven, Connecticut PROJECT COMMENTS: Consulting with Chadsworth, the architects chose a Scamozzi column capital, which was nearly an exact replica of the severely damaged originals at the main entrance. The house was originally built in 1895. Like much of the house, which had been neglected for many decades, the original capitals ultimately proved to be held together by 150 years of paint. The capitals are a key feature of a strongly symmetrical facade, and the architects were grateful to remain true to the original design intent. This house is a late and rare example of very strict Georgian revival done in the East Rock neighborhood. The original house owner, Moritz Spier, was a warm-hearted coal merchant known to have carried the accounts of hundreds of families through the many economic downturns of that period. The house had few owners, and its highly detailed interior woodwork has thankfully remained unpainted. Because of its large foyer and wide open central staircase, the geometry of the house helped it survive a trend of partitioning large houses into Yale graduate student apartments. The Scamozzi capitals utilized for the renovation of this historic home were (8) of Chadsworth's PolyStone® fiberglass composite capitals. CONTRACTORS: JD&E PHOTOGRAPHER: Dennis Marisco DESCRIPTION: The Cathedral Campus project is an exercise in campus place making, which created a new administrative and religious center for the Diocese of Wheeling/Charleston. An opportunity for a makeover emerged when the parish school was closed due to low enrollment. The final result combines selective demolition, adaptive reuse of historic structures, and strategic additions to establish a new religious place focused on the historic St. Joseph’s Cathedral. JURY COMMENTS: While in some ways this project seems very basic, it is deceptively so. Its details, materials, and spaces – both internal and external – are rich and sophisticated. The building is strong and very comfortable in its response at an urban scale, just as it is very successful at the detail scale. It demonstrates a great understanding of the campus by removing those parts that do not work and creating a beautiful courtyard that enhances all of the surrounding buildings. The glass and metal façade, while modern, continues the lines of the brick buildings next to it and fits masterfully. Beautiful landscape work too!
