These oak floors are 75 years old and, as you can see, are simply beautiful after refinishing. A solvent based urethane finish was applied over common Minwax stain.

When the client spoke with the Delaney Window Fashions LLC workroom designer about the creation of a unique, Hawaiian-themed child’s bedroom, the bright pink and orange paint was already in place, along with the hibiscus floral fabric border. The impetus for the additional work was the transition from a baby’s room with a crib to a little girl’s room with a full-size bed. Although the room was started, it was far from complete. With a limited amount of the client’s floral fabric, which had subsequently been discontinued, the designer created bedding and pillows and constructed a Hawaiian-themed bed canopy with lights. The homeowner wanted the bedding to be washable but not quilted and the bed crown to be light weight. A tailored, center-pleat bed skirt was created first. The remaining fabric, along with an accent fabric was used to create a comforter, envelope and bolster pillows. The comforter was created with two mitered corners; and micro-cording was purposely added around the middle section to hide the seam.The middle section was hand tacked to secure comforter layers for laundering. To finish the bedding, a tiki hut-inspired bed crown was created, which was challenging because the material had to be light weight. Including LED garland added a fun and whimsical element. With child safety in mind, shirred tulle panels were attached to the back and sides of the crown. In this way, the lights were visible, but not accessible to the child. The project was a success, and the client loves the room. The child’s lighted tiki hut bed crown provided a cozy environment for nightly bedtime stories. It made for one happy little girl! Time had stood still at this 1970s ranch in Armonk when the owners invited us to collaborate with them to transform it into a modern, light-filled home for their young family. The budget was lean, so economy was a primary consideration for every design decision. The challenge was to identify the modest home’s virtues – vaulted ceilings and a lovely backyard – and accentuate them by strategically optimizing available funds. We were tasked with rectifying a dysfunctional interior stair, connecting to the outdoors with new large windows, and updating the exterior. We focused our attention on a finite set of architectural moves which would have the biggest impact and improve our clients’ daily experience of the home. Detailing was kept simple, using common grade materials and standard components. All exterior walls were revamped with new windows and siding. Although these materials were not particularly costly, thoughtful layout of boards, battens, and openings produced a cohesive, rigorous composition at each facade. Since the budget would not cover the homeowners’ complete wish list, some items were bracketed for subsequent phases. The challenge was to establish a framework that would allow future work – including a new roof and kitchen renovation – to proceed smoothly. The homeowners, both scientists, were enthusiastic collaborators, contributing their outstanding design sensibilities to selection of fixtures and finishes. Construction ended just in time for the arrival of their baby – and with that, the transformation of their family home was complete.

Built in 1949, this Edina home had a strong horizontal presence on the site, but through subsequent renovations the overall massing was lacking clarity and refinement and the entry was diminutive and uninviting. The roof and siding materials were aging, and important interior spaces were cramped and closed in. The house needed better light, better connection internally and out, and exterior updates to clarify and enhance the strengths of the home. The primary design evolved out of a celebration of the existing horizontality of the home and a recognition that a bigger home was not needed. By layering materiality and color, a new identity was created. A new cedar entry canopy slips out from under the previous roof line, extending further towards the street. This added warmth at the entry is echoed along the facade, creating a graceful rhythm and texture. The previous additions were re-clad with a darker material palette in order to anchor and unify the ends of the home. As the grade slopes down towards the back yard, horizontal bands are exposed, revealing the layering top to bottom. Combined, these few shifts in color and materiality allowed for a complete transformation of the home. The interior is reflective of the material and color palette used outside. The main living spaces are opened up and connected while strengthening the original symmetry of the more formal linear alignment of rooms. A whole new kitchen relocates the center of the home and makes more fluid the daily life of this young family. The house is fully transformed inside and out, all without adding more square feet. Our client requested a dining room that could be both grand and inviting. Our solution to this was to add comfortable seating along with rustic finishes and organic elements and shapes to soften the lines of the space. Riese Design, Inc. - Polish nickel chandelier featured in this dining room, with frosted surrounds encompassing the lighting. The metal in the chandelier bow and curve, making this light fixture very appealing. The white drapery has a very light pattern on it so as to not overwhelm the room, but to add to the character of the space. This dining room also features a beautiful chair rail and grey wall to ground the space nicely.

Q: Please tell us about the architectural vision and interior design style of the home, and how Antique Impressions’ Cantabria Hickory floor fits into it. A: Our design vision for the home was simple, classic and timeless. The flooring was an important factor in our design concept as we wanted to run the same floor throughout the majority of our home. With two young children, we wanted a hardwood floor that was durable, looked clean and that would stand the test of time. Therefore, selecting the flooring was one of the first decisions we made for our home. We used our flooring selection to make subsequent design decisions, and having the flooring as the element that tied the whole house together made the design process easier.
