Full Potential
Once ridiculed as “antipasto on the Potomac,” the Watergate complex designed by Italian architect Luigi Moretti has become one of Washington’s most respectable addresses. But its curvaceous 1960s architecture still poses design challenges for residents seeking to transform their outdated apartments for contemporary living.
Inside, the living area now extends from the terrace door to the kitchen and an adjoining nook for watching TV. The rear wall of the kitchen isn’t tiled or painted, but covered in boards made of recycled wood fiber, fly ash and cement. A row of fir cabinets stands out against the gray panels and white-lacquered drawers under the Corian countertops add more contrast. “I now enjoy cooking so much more,” says the homeowner. “The previous kitchen had very little counter space and storage, and very little connection to the rest of the apartment.”
“A neutral color scheme allows sculptural objects, in this case iconic furniture, and artwork to stand out,” says Santalla. “An element of contrast, such as a tone or a texture, adds richness to the palette.”
In the master bedroom, Santalla designed the bed frame with attached nightstands and upholstered the adjacent wall to create an oversized headboard. He created a television stand on the adjacent wall that allows the screen to swivel so it can be viewed from the bed or terrace.
Of all the renovation challenges facing the couple, one of the most problematic was deciding what to do with the original parquet floors in the living space. Santalla came up with the idea of staining the existing wood and extending the same dark tone to the terrace floor.
“Now the indoor and outdoor parts of the apartment are integrated to create an almost seamless space,” says the homeowner. “The design succeeds in realizing the promise of what the Watergate can be.”

Designed and built exclusively for the prestigious Parade of Homes in Seven Oaks, this home is a stunning example of a Santa Barbara style residence. A double-gated circular, courtyard driveway welcomes you and immediately gives a sense of grand stature to the home. The exterior is comprised of stucco with tile roofing and flaunts numerous details and arches and ironwork to distinguish itself from others along the street. The home is an imposing 9,700 square feet, yet somehow manages to retain a sense of warmth about it. The master area is set off on the left wing of the lower floor, succeeding in creating a private, luxurious haven in both the cozy suite and the adjoining elegant spa. Near the center of the home, you find yourself enveloped in the magnificent Great Room in which you are surrounded by a ring of balconies from above. The upper floor boasts several more bedrooms, a guest suite, and a media room that provides an ideal setting for entertaining guests. With an outdoor living area, as well as an al fresco dining area, the rear of the house invites you to relax in somewhat of a resort-style backdrop, allowing you to enjoy the exquisite and tranquil beauty of the pool, or the amazing view of nature just beyond.

Tucked away under the eaves, the third-floor attic declares itself as a cozy hideaway. Characterized by soft finishes and a delicate simplicity, the room serves a multitude of purposes for the couple. "We can use [the attic] as an extra bedroom, an office, and an extra space to read or watch tv," says Catherine. "It is just a big cozy secluded space that is ideal for relaxing. Bryan tried to claim it as his man-cave, but hasn't succeeded in that just yet!" she jokes.

I was honored to work with these homeowners again, now to fully furnish this new magnificent architectural marvel made especially for them by Lake Flato Architects. Creating custom furnishings for this entire home is a project that spanned over a year in careful planning, designing and sourcing while the home was being built and then installing soon thereafter. I embarked on this design challenge with three clear goals in mind. First, create a complete furnished environment that complimented not competed with the architecture. Second, elevate the client’s quality of life by providing beautiful, finely-made, comfortable, easy-care furnishings. Third, provide a visually stunning aesthetic that is minimalist, well-edited, natural, luxurious and certainly one of kind. Ultimately, I feel we succeeded in creating a visual symphony accompaniment to the architecture of this room, enhancing the warmth and livability of the space while keeping high design as the principal focus.
The centerpiece of this modern sectional is the collection of aged bronze and wood faceted cocktail tables to create a sculptural dynamic focal point to this otherwise very linear space.
From this room there is a view of the solar panels installed on a glass ceiling at the breezeway. Also there is a 1 ton sliding wood door that shades this wall of windows when needed for privacy and shade.

"I want people to say 'Wow!' when they walk in to my house"
This was our directive for this bachelor's newly purchased home.
We accomplished the mission by drafting plans for a significant remodel which included removing walls and columns, opening up the spaces between rooms to create better flow, then adding custom furnishings and original art for a customized unique Wow factor!
His Christmas party proved we had succeeded as each person 'wowed!' the spaces!
Even more meaningful to us, as Designers, was watching everyone converse in the sitting area, dining room, living room, and around the grand island (12'-6" grand to be exact!) and genuinely enjoy all the fabulous, yet comfortable spaces. Success all around!

Living room - coastal formal living room idea in Los Angeles with white walls, a standard fireplace and no tv

The play of light and shadow is the main idea of this composition. As you enter this luxurious living room, you immediately notice a beautiful U-shaped sofa with some magnificent armchairs and an elegant coffee table.
This island in the center of the living room looks great against the background of the huge windows that allow light to easily enter the living room space. Sparkling wall surfaces and mirrors add some light to this living room interior as well.
With our outstanding interior designers, try to make your living room stand out and look unusual like the interior in this photo!

Here's what our clients from this project had to say:
We LOVE coming home to our newly remodeled and beautiful 41 West designed and built home! It was such a pleasure working with BJ Barone and especially Paul Widhalm and the entire 41 West team. Everyone in the organization is incredibly professional and extremely responsive. Personal service and strong attention to the client and details are hallmarks of the 41 West construction experience. Paul was with us every step of the way as was Ed Jordon (Gary David Designs), a 41 West highly recommended designer. When we were looking to build our dream home, we needed a builder who listened and understood how to bring our ideas and dreams to life. They succeeded this with the utmost honesty, integrity and quality!
41 West has exceeded our expectations every step of the way, and we have been overwhelmingly impressed in all aspects of the project. It has been an absolute pleasure working with such devoted, conscientious, professionals with expertise in their specific fields. Paul sets the tone for excellence and this level of dedication carries through the project. We so appreciated their commitment to perfection...So much so that we also hired them for two more remodeling projects.
We love our home and would highly recommend 41 West to anyone considering building or remodeling a home.
