Building this exceptional home cinema system in Westlake, TX was a pleasure from day one. Our clients have owned multiple home theaters, and wanted to step up the performance in this new media room. The construction of the room is heavily reinforced with 2x6s. The entire room has been insulated to keep the sound inside the room and minimize leakage to the rest of the house. The riser base for the back row of chairs was reinforced with wood screws, and was fully insulated. In addition, the walls have been sheetrocked with Quietrock. This treatment substantially keeps the sound from traveling between walls because of its high density coefficient. Because the media room is on the 2nd floor, a sound barrier was added to the floors to provide an additional layer of sound control within the room. The finished walls were treated with custom acoustic panels from Auralex. We applied absorptive, reflective and diffusive treatments throughout the room to create a well-balanced acoustic environment for music and movies. The interior designer brought in a faux painter to create a leather-like texture on the walls. She very creatively faux painted the acoustic cloth panels to match the leather look and feel of the room. A 7.2 complement of Triad speakers are optimally located within the room. The front three LCR speakers are positioned behind an acoustically transparent Stewart video screen. The four surround speakers are located in a horseshoe-shaped configuration and fully envelope the listener with all the subtle (and not-so-subtle) special effects. Here’s a quick grout cleaning and re-colouring job I completed in the town of Canvey Island, Essex. Canvey Island lies on the south east coast, and lies just above sea level which in my job is always worth noting as the area can be prone to flooding. This wasn’t the problem here though, simply put, my client was unhappy with the colour of their grout, and wanted it re-coloured to a darker shade to match the grey Ceramic floor tiles. Cleaning the grout before re-colouring is essential because, as many readers are probably well aware, grouts are porous and therefore can very easily absorb dirt and grease. Most often this will result in grout discolouration if not dealt with promptly. So, as mentioned above the first step in the re-colouring process involved cleaning the grout lines. For this Tile Doctor has a special Pre-Treat Cleaner which is sprayed on and scrubbed into the grout to both remove any existing dirt and also to prepare the grout joints for a superior bond with the Grout Colourant. Once complete the grout lines looked clean and refreshed. To clean the ceramic I diluted one part Tile Doctor Pro-Clean to three parts water, and used it to wash down the Ceramic tiles, leaving a consistent level of cleanliness across the entire floor. I then rinsed the floor with water which was then extracted using a wet vacuum and waited for 3 hours for the floor to dry. Once dry, I began the process of applying the Charcoal Grey (as chosen by the client) Grout Colourant to the grout lines. As well as changing the colour the colourant also forms a barrier over the grout sealing it in and protecting it from future staining for years to come. Then, once dry, the floor was given another quick clean using a light spray of water and a white buffing pad, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing sheen finish. Contemporary style, traditional construction The handcrafted cabinetry features flat-faced streamline doors and drawer fronts. Flat-faced cupboard doors, often called slab doors or flat panel doors, are single- surface doors with no frames, bevels, or detailing for a clean, minimalist look. The doors are fitted with concealed soft closing hinges and drawers are mounted on fully extending concealed soft closing drawer slides. The solidly fixed, square-edged, thick engineered shelves and uprights with a 42mm visual front edge have exceptional strength, stability and a bold, chunky, consistent aesthetic. Beautifully finished for a high-end look The cabinets feature knurled pull handles and knobs with a dark brushed brass finish. The textured pattern of knurled hardware has a tactile feel and provides a superior grip while hiding fingerprints. Knurled knobs and handles like these here work well with modern cabinets, flat-panel doors and slab drawers and create a high-end, detailed appearance. The entire media unit has been flawlessly finished in an eco-friendly, water-based, handcrafted paint from Farrow & Ball in Dimity No. 2008, a very pale taupe that is a sophisticated, warm neutral. The surface has a beautiful, wipeable matt finish that is exceptionally durable. This pale taupe colour creates a ‘quiet luxury’ look without the harshness of pure white. While stark white can often feel cold or clinical, this very light taupe is inherently warmer and more comforting, making the living room feel instantly settled and inviting.
