A nature-integrated wellness and retreat campus in Cotati designed to support the mental and physical recovery of first responders through healing landscapes and community-focused spaces.

The Logan Arts Building plays a role in strengthening community identity in one of the oldest and culturally significant neighborhoods in San Diego. Much of the industrial infrastructure in the area that supports the Port and Naval Base have evolved over time into an arts community. The Logan Arts Building will be a place for many of those artists to create and share their works. A paseja conserves a mural along the property line and provides light and access to the rear of the property. The studios were carefully oriented and designed to optimize the lighting conditions for artwork. Subtle and diffused light is drawn in from the north for greater color control. High level lighting, wall space, and large storage spaces are incorporated to assist the tenants in creating their best work.

This communal kitchen was designed as a warm and welcoming gathering hub within the community, combining functionality with a refined, modern aesthetic. A large central table with seating for ten anchors the space, encouraging shared meals, collaboration, and connection among residents. Clean-lined cabinetry, generous counter space, and integrated appliances provide a highly practical layout for everyday use, while a large window fills the room with natural light and enhances the open, airy feel. A thoughtfully placed indoor tree introduces an organic element that softens the architectural lines and adds a sense of calm. Designed by Jubilee Interiors in Westlake Village, California, the space balances durability, comfort, and contemporary style to support both casual and communal living.

Updated Traditional lobby for an Assisted Living Memory Care Community. The use of antimicrobial/ Crypton and Greengard contract fabrics was imperative to support the residences healthy, comfortable and attractive environment. Always aware of ADA compliances, spacing for wheel chairs and walkers was critical as well as the proper lighting and accessories. Studies have shown that plants and images of exteriors create a soothing space for communities that specialize in memory Care. To prevent wandering without "imprisoning" residents, camouflaging exit doors and using unobtrusive or keypad locks. Exit doors can also be placed off to the left, or right of hallways so they are not conveyed as destinations.

A nature-integrated wellness and retreat campus in Cotati designed to support the mental and physical recovery of first responders through healing landscapes and community-focused spaces.

This project was designed, and developed by Rhodes Architecture + Light while Josh Meharry was a team member. Constructed within a rare five acre plot of forested land in Bothell, this house design stemmed from an interest in both creating connections to the surrounding environment as well as carving out an area for communal gathering for this family of 6 to come together with their extended family, friends and community. In response to this desire, the main residence was broken into three separate structures arranged roughly into a “C” confirguration, which formed an inner courtyard where communal gatherings could take place that was adjacent to but felt distinct from the surrounding forest. All three structures support different uses for the residence, but all have views toward and open onto this inner court. Since the residence was located at the low point of a shallow ravine that runs through the site, the two side structures were built into the surrounding hillsides with boardformed concrete retaining walls that are exposed at both the interior and exterior of the house. The central structure that houses the main interior living spaces, bridges over a small stream that flows during the wet season, allowing the site’s natural drainage patterns to remain intact. The spanning portion of this central structure is supported off of two cast in place board-formed concrete chimneys, which also act to define the edges of the main interior spaces and include large double sided fireplaces. This central structure was designed to be very transparent to be as inviting as possible and provide views through the structure to the inner courtyard and into the forest beyond. The simple gabled forms are typical of traditional Pacific Northwest homes and cabins found in forested settings like this, and are preferred for their structural efficiency, and their ability to shed rain, snow and tree debris. The roof forms are vaulted at the interior as well, creating an increased sense of spaciousness. The exterior materials used are extremely durable and will remain maintenance free for many years, with corten standing seam metal roofs, corrugated pre-finished siding, exposed board-formed concrete and powder coated steel.

Our clients wanted their home to be host to charity functions, community events, and their family and friends, as well as a showcase for their eclectic and colorful art collection featuring works by local Oakland artists. Oh, and when they moved in, they did the work to register the house as an Oakland Historical Landmark. The fact that the couple was looking to upgrade their living room in the Hollywood Regency style (which is known for bold colors, shiny metallics, luxe fabrics, and an eye to mixing opulence with comfort while holding true to the glamor of 1930s Hollywood) made this project all the more inspiring and fun for me and my team. John recalls, “We wanted a place that was glamorous, and compelling, so that people who visit would be excited and inspired by it!” Our mission was to bring the very grand living room with its high ceilings and leaded glass bay windows to the next level for the family (including grown children Tom and Mandela) and their guests — ranging in number from 6 to 60 or more, on any given day or night. The Hollywood Regency aesthetic was a perfect canvas for mixing and matching with the couple’s significant and hyper-local pop art collection, including pieces by famed Oakland artists Mel Ramos and K-Dub. Kim and John’s personal views and aesthetics, together with their vibrant art collection, called for a bold design that is more funky and eclectic overall than many owners of historic homes like this tend to prefer. I mean, don’t get me wrong; many of our clients like to do something a little daring, and often they opt for elements of glam. However, John and Kim agreeing to our specification of a pair of peacock blue sofas — that is no small commitment to audacious color! Another furnishing element I love from this project is the custom-designed birds-eye-maple and antique glass inset bar — on wheels, which allows flexibility: a bartender can serve a large party from behind it or it can be turned around for use as self-service for a more intimate gathering. My team and I couldn’t be more proud to have created a design that inspires and supports this family so that they may continue to make significant contributions to their causes and community.

Wailea Point is an exclusive gated community located in the heart of Wailea's best real estate. Nestled between the famous Wailea Beach and Polo Beach, this pristine oceanfront property is close to world-renowned golf courses, fine dining and shopping. we were fortunate enough to build a beautiful desingn staircase there. The staircase is self-supporting and features floating wooden steps that give the space an airy and modern feel. The sophisticated design of the staircase includes load-bearing glass that extends up to 5 meters in one piece, ensuring a stable and safe construction. The glass stringers of the staircase not only provide a transparent and elegant look, but also serve as an important support for the steps. A special highlight is the elaborate landing at the start of the staircase, which is fitted with LED lights in the step overhang to provide atmospheric lighting. Overall, the staircase is an impressive and well thought-out design element that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

The Garage Apartments in Asheville, NC demonstrate how even a small roof can make a big impact on the ecological health of the city. The new plantings are the first step in developing a dynamic urban community that supports native pollinator populations, reduces heat island effect and allows the rain that falls at this spot to infiltrate and evapotranspire more like it would in nature. The living roof also demonstrates how leftover spaces in the city can be reimagined and reinvigorated. The plantings were designed to support native plants in a very intentional way, creating a pocket of beauty in an unexpected place.
