Melanie Roy’s challenge in designing an extremely functional mud room to accommodate a busy family’s needs was to create a place for everything from crab nets and straw mats in metal buckets to beach towels, flip flops, balls and various summer paraphernalia in wire baskets. The challenge was that the room had no cubbies so boat cleats were used for hanging items up and out of the way and baskets and buckets for easy-access storage under a rough-hewn table. She created a beach theme by anchoring the space with a Stark rug with a wave design. Artists’ rendered surfboards are decorative but often accompany surfboards that are constantly in use. A window seat/bench is upholstered in a waterproof Duralee fabric, piped with jute, so you can sit on it even in a wet bathing suit. HUE worked together with contractor Todd Presault of Pono Construction to finalize the finishes, space plan, and custom designed unique interior and exterior pieces that give Paia Surf it’s fun coastal vibe. HUE thoughtfully selected all furniture and accessories, down to the custom designed surfboard dining bench, tabletop and picnic baskets in each room that give the guests an authentic North Shore experience.

A happy east coast family gets their perfect second home on the west coast. This family of 6 was a true joy to work with from start to finish. They were very excited to have a home reflecting the true west coast sensibility: ocean tones mixed with neutrals, modern art and playful elements, and of course durability and comfort for all the kids and guests. The pool area and kitchen got total overhauls (thanks to Jeff with Black Cat Construction) and we added a fun wine closet below the staircase. They trusted the vision of the design and made few requests for changes. And the end result was even better than they expected. Custom shell and glass concrete pavers, Ipe bench with built in planter, cedar and LED planters, cedar privacy screen and a surfboard found along the Hudson river, complete with the driftwood to make the legs! All to give the vibe that a beach murder mystery writer would dig, right in NYC for Showtime.

Set of six American of Martinsville "Surfboard" dining chairs around a vintage pedestal table. The long upholstered bench is vintage T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings and the wall decor is a fantastic Italian candelabra we found at an antique shop in Southern California. The overdyed rug in a neutral combination of greys and taupes works beautifully, complementing the lush bamboo growing alongside the house.
