At an elevation of 8750' and winter design temperature of -16 degrees F, the historic mountain mining town of Telluride, Colorado can be cold! Beyond Efficiency was brought on board for its cold-climate expertise and provided buiding envelope advising and detailing, mechanical engineering, and guidance in surpassing Telluride's energy efficiency requirements for the new single-family home. The project was completed in the fall of 2016. Our detailed plan review of preliminary building envelope details services identified thermal bridging issues at basement wall intersections with the slab and raised floor. Simple modifications significantly reduced heat loss and improved constructability. We also advised on the above-ground framed wall assemby, which resulted in a 2x6 wood-framed wall insulated with dense-pack cellulose, ZIP System sheathing (which doubles as the airtight weather-resistant barrier (WRB)), 2" continuous rigid mineral wool insulation, 1x4 furring, and fiber cement lap siding. The wall assembly reduces heat loss 20% compared to Telluride's minimum requirement, and the R-52 roof assembly is 35% better than code. Alpen high-solar gain fiberglass windows, which include a low-E film suspended between the two panes of glass, reduce window-related heat losses by 50% compared to code and round out the high-performance envelope package. The final mechanical system design includes heat-recovery ventilation and in-floor radiant hydronic heating provided from a 95% AFUE high-efficiency condensing gas boiler. Utility bills from the first year of occupancy demonstrate the project's highly efficient design: the household's total site energy is about 20% less than that of the average Colorado residence, an impressive feat given that Telluride is in a significantly more extreme climate zone than a majority of Colorado's population. The homeowners loved the area where they lived and the unique, fabulous view it provided. Their trees were maturing beautifully, and recent landscaping improvements provided cherished outdoor living space. Although the owners had designed and built this to be the home of their dreams, those dreams changed over time. It all began with a discussion about "flipping the kitchen and dining room" in order to create one grand, yet cozy living space that encouraged togetherness, for either small or large gatherings. That discussion evolved into a more significant remodel that surpassed their expectations. Relocating the two primary rooms, kitchen and dining, afforded the opportunity to re-imagine other supporting spaces. A new walk-in pantry was added and the laundry, mud, and powder room areas were completely redefined. Additional finishing touches were added to the living/family room area, including removing a corner fireplace and building a new, larger fireplace in the center of the room surrounded by Showplace bookcase units. In the end, the owners got a lodge-inspired space that made them fall in love with their home all over again.

This beach home was originally built in 1936. It's a great property, just steps from the sand, but it needed a major overhaul from the foundation to a new copper roof. Inside, we designed and created an open concept living, kitchen and dining area, perfect for hosting or lounging. The result? A home remodel that surpassed the homeowner's dreams. Outside, adding a custom shower and quality materials like Trex decking added function and style to the exterior. And with panoramic views like these, you want to spend as much time outdoors as possible!

The lake views are only surpassed by the stunning bathtub enclosed in a marble surround. We added motorized shades and drapery to frame the views and provide privacy and sun protection.

Studio26homes, a design/ build firm dedicated to creating highly efficient, healthy homes, recently completed a 4,700+ sf project in Orefield, PA. The private residence earned the Gold rating from the National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) National Green Building Guidelines certification program as the 19th certified project of any level in the country. To reach the gold standard, Orefield had to earn at least 395 points and ended up surpassing that requirement with a grand total of 542 points. Studio26homes hadn’t used Eldorado Stone before this project and were pleased to find that Eldorado is not only passionate about what they do but also back up their products should any problems arise. The fact that Eldorado Stone is locally manufactured, offers low maintenance, is competitively priced, and features the geometric shape they were looking for provided further confirmation that this was the company to work with. They chose Eldorado’s Castle Stone and were originally going to only apply it onto the fireplace and chimney. However, because the product complemented the home’s shade of red, they chose to do a more dramatic application, which resulted in great satisfaction for both the team and the homeowners. An amazing client who wanted to push the envelope on both material choice and green building integration. This single-family home with detached garage is to be a year round base for a professional athlete. The open plan interior is achieved by CLT panels which form the walls and roof, vaulted, with no interior beams or ties, and without the use of an exterior steel frame. Woodfibre insulation covers the solid timber construction and shō sugi ban treated wood exterior. The buildings are arranged around a vast triangular canopy, providing a connection between each building and shelter from the summer sun and winter snow. The envelope and windows all surpass passive house requirements, whilst underground tanks will collect and treat rainwater for household use. Work began in Summer 2018 and was completed late fall 2019.

Sean tackled his guest bathroom remodel to enhance the small space's functionality and appearance. The focus was on optimizing space utilization and refreshing the area with updated fixtures and finishes. The challenge of the tiny bathroom was addressed by carefully selecting space-efficient fixtures and finishes that enhanced functionality without sacrificing style. The remodel involved a complete demolition of the existing guest bathroom down to the studs, especially around the shower walls, to start fresh. A new walk-in shower replaced the dated shower tub combo. New shower drain plumbing was installed, along with the shower floor, which was tiled with Arizona Tile's Pave 2" x 2" mosaic in Moka and grouted in Driftwood. The shower walls were adorned with Arizona Tile's Tivoli in Bianco 12" x 24", creating a continuous offset pattern complemented by Warm Gray grout. A new recessed wall niche was added for bath products, matching the wall tile for a seamless look. In the vanity area, a space-efficient 42” Ove Decors Athena vanity in Almond Latte offered ample storage, paired with a Delta Kayra faucet in Brilliance Stainless, and a framed mirror and a medicine cabinet for extra storage. The guest bathroom transformation surpassed expectations, converting a tight space into a functional, stylish haven. The smart space utilization yielded a bathroom that caters to guests' needs while enhancing home value.
