The “handrill” of Corten steel follows the peastone and steel steps down a steep slope to pour into a round basin, emptying into a channel that meanders through the narrow back garden at ground level, ending finally in a boulder fountain. Devised to minimize root disturbance for the tall existing pines on the property, the continuous Corten steel structure is supported by concrete tubes rather than a foundation that would have required extensive excavation. The Kitchen was opened up and reorganized to allow better traffic flow. The lowered maple butcher block table allows for dining in the kitchen, while keeping it separate from the work area. Rather than starting with an outcome in mind, this 1,400 square foot residence began from a polemic place - exploring shared conviction regarding the concentrated power of living with a smaller footprint. From the gabled silhouette to passive ventilation, the home captures the nostalgia for the past with the sustainable practices of the future. While the exterior materials contrast a calm, minimal palette with the sleek lines of the gabled silhouette, the interior spaces embody a playful, artistic spirit. From the hand painted De Gournay wallpaper in the master bath to the rugged texture of the over-grouted limestone and Portuguese cobblestones, the home is an experience that encapsulates the unexpected and the timeless.

This accessory dwelling unit (ADU) is a sustainable, compact home for the homeowner's aging parent. Although the home is only 660 sq. ft., it has a bedroom, full kitchen (with dishwasher!) and even an elevator for the aging parents. We used many strategically-placed windows and skylights to make the space feel more expansive. The ADU is also full of sustainable features, including the solar panels on the roof.
