Moderne Living was recently commissioned to carry out a transitional design project for a North Carolina home, which on the face of it could have presented obvious challenges due to the geographical difference. Not believing that distance should be an issue, we rose to the challenge. Through careful consultation, the client revealed their vision, in turn guiding our choices on their behalf. This led us to select the Euforia range by Montbel, whose design ethos encapsulates tradition, innovation and dynamism. We set out by developing a relationship with the client through telephone conversations, an investment in time that was absolutely crucial in contributing to the success of the project. Using the client's descriptions, ideas and floor plan, along with the talents of our designer, we were able to understand, give shape to and define the vision the client had in mind for their home. We chose Euforia dining chairs, armchairs and stools because their collections offer modern elegance perfectly balanced with supreme comfort. The range takes the best of classical design and reimagines it with character, flair and modern touches. Euforia blends traditional design hallmarks including tufting (buttoned upholstery) with familiar silhouettes, solid wood frames and upholstered seats and backs. Scott and Janet of Elgin have had four design to build renovations with Advance Design over the last decade. We got the chance to sit down and talk with Janet about her experience working with Advance Design on so many different areas of her home. Starting with her kitchen in 2009, Janet proclaimed, “The reason we kept coming back is because our first [renovation] went so extremely well, exceeding all of my expectations.” Since their kitchen renovation with Advance Design ten years ago, Scott and Janet have also worked with Advance to remodel their master bedroom, their power room, a wet bar, and most recently their master bath. Having renovated practically every major room in the house with the team, we asked Janet what made her experience with Advance Design so special. “We went with Advance Design because we trusted them so much more, their experience, and everything that they brought. We were confident they were giving us what we wanted for the money we were spending.” For their most recent renovation, Scott and Janet clearly knew what to expect going into their master bath renovation. They were familiar with Advance’s step by step design process that epitomizes the “Common Sense Remodeling” philosophy applied in every project Advance creates. After once again experiencing the careful budgeting analysis, the pointed design meetings, and the clear documentation that leads up the a thoroughly managed installation, Janet’s simple summary of their experience is this; “The word I would use to describe the process is – collaboration!” Working closely with Advance Design kitchen designer Michelle Lecinski, together they were able to develop a new master bath design that not only worked with their investment goal, but also made sense for their lifestyle. “Oh Michelle, my designer! I connected with her immediately. She spent time getting to know us, our lifestyle, even the setting of our house.” The threesome had a great experience designing and producing yet another successful project together. When it came to their new project plans, Scott and Janet were interested in creating a relaxing “spa-like” experience in their master bath. One of the many ideas Michelle introduced during the design process was installing a Kohler Alteo series showerhead for a rain-like shower experience. This designer showerhead, mixed with the warm ambiance of the lighting and pebble accent running throughout the shower make for what Janet calls a “luxury spa essence”. From the oversized glass sliding door to the recessed niche for accessories, each special detail was considered and implemented intentionally so as to create the maximumly optimized use of the compact space. Not only was this transformation one of beauty and luxury, but special attention was given to every way possible to provide additional storage to maximize the functionality of the bath area as a whole. Once design was complete and the bath construction project began in their home, making sure everything happened efficiently and on schedule became new priority number one. “Having a project manager made an enormous difference,” Janet said, “It was so worth it to hire professionals that knew exactly what they were doing. Each of three Renson pergola systems and their unique features are controlled with the touch of a button. The outdoor kitchen and dining area features appliances by Hestan and highly customized concrete countertops with matching shelves mounted on the wall. The aluminum cabinets are custom made by Urban Bonfire and feature accessories for storing kitchen items like dishes, appliances, beverages, an ice maker and receptacles for recycling and refuse. The Renson pergola over the dining area also integrates a set of sliding loggia panels to offer a modern backdrop, add privacy and block the sun. Rooftopia partnered with the talented Derek Lerner for original artwork that was transformed into a large-scale mural, and with the help of Chicago Sign Systems, the artwork was enlarged, printed and installed as one full wall of the penthouse. This artwork is truly a special part of the design. Rooftopia customized the design of the planter boxes in partnership with ORE Designs to streamline the look and finish of the metal planter containers. Many of the planter boxes also have toe kick lighting to improve the evening ambiance. Several large planters are home to birch trees, ornamental grasses, annual flowers and the design incorporates containers for seasonal vegetables and an herb garden. Our teams partnered with Architects, Structural engineers, electricians, plumbers and sound engineers to upgrade the roof to support the pergola systems, integrate lighting and appliances, an automatic watering system and outdoor sound systems. This large residential roof deck required a multi year development, permitting and installation timeline, proving that the best things are worth the wait.

Circulation was poor, leaving family members on top of one another when entertaining family and friends. The new kitchen design nearly doubles the kitchen size within the original space; opening it up completely and enjoying an expansive island containing a new Kohler Whitehaven Smart Divide farm sink, a dishwasher, and pull out double trash receptacle. The great new gathering space accommodates four pull out stools beckoning grandchildren and friends alike. A prefab modular fits neatly on a tiny Santa Monica corner lot. On a quiet corner lot near Santa Monica’s Ocean Park neighborhood, just blocks from the Pacific Ocean, architect Jennifer Siegal made the most of her unique talent in utilizing prefabricated modules to create an eye-catching home. Working with a lot measuring only 25 feet wide by 100 feet long, Siegal, owner of Venice, California-based architecture firm Office of Mobile Design, carefully fitted two stacking prefab modules to form the two-story 2,330-square-foot home. Siegal, winner of the 2016 ArcVision Prize-Women and Architecture, has been recognized internationally as “a fearless pioneer in the research and development of prefabricated construction systems.” It’s easy to see why with her Santa Monica prefab. For such a seemingly confined area, the home features an airy, open floor plan, with a combined living-dining-kitchen space opening up to cozy, foliage-lined back patio via a three-panel Western Window Systems Series 600 Multi-Slide Door. When open, the door seamlessly merges the indoor living space with the patio, letting Pacific Ocean breezes course through the space. Bamboo flooring throughout augments the openness of the floor plan with its clean look and light color. A small garage, just yards from the street, doubles as another indoor living space featuring a roll-up door with frosted glass panels to let in natural light when closed. When open, it provides a unique sitting experience. The second floor also makes the most of the narrow space, with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a master-bedroom terrace over the back patio. Various shapes and sizes of Western Window Systems Series 670 Awning and Casement Windows help the home make the most of the ideal Santa Monica weather. Atop it all is a unique butterfly roof that gives the modular shape of the home a playful twist and a sense of mobility.
