[?????? ??????????] At the intersection of art and architecture lives our Mobile Greenhouse. This seeming love-child of tom fruin & olson kundig was assembled with salvaged pieces including Sunkist-steel-factory windows, a motorcycle trailer, an old factory hand wheel, a rooftop solar water tank, a kid’s single speed bicycle front/rear sprockets, a chain from a retractable entry gate along with new metal stock from @ims_metals and beautiful art glass from @pacificartglass. p.c. Function is elevated through beauty and now our herb garden is protected from the adorable bunnies of this Conejo Valley while the structure throws pools of liquid blue and green on the DG. All while re-using leftover parts, some of a bygone era. (Sigh. Oh, single-paned steel windows, we love you - even though you are completely energy inefficient) The parabolic angle-iron arch was critical to the design so we sallied forth through the tantrums it caused. As lovers of #stainedglass in general, we loved seeing this larger scale project come together.

The goal was to create a warm space that flowed from the abutting master bedroom. The rest of the house has a down-to-earth sophistication that combines antiques, rich textures with a botanical theme. The master bedroom has a lush tapestry bedspread full of different leaves randomly scattered across the fabric. This became the inspiration for the bath. Taking a random fern as a motif, I initially found gorgeous wallpaper with the ferns against a rich chocolate background. Concerned with durability in certain areas of the bathroom, I shifted the approach to be a custom wall finish still using the deep chocolate background in a matte finish and adding hand-painted coppery bronze ferns randomly across the surface.
The homeowners wanted a vanity that incorporated a make-up area for her and plenty of counter space for both. In order to keep the wainscoting lines in check, the vanity section maintained the same counter height as the rest of the vanity therefore a custom height was required for the vanity stool. The wainscoting was kept relatively simple so as to find matching flexible moldings for the tub face.
The ivory trim color contrasts nicely with the browns. The cabinet finish was selected to bring out the coppery-bronze topped with complimenting granite. Kohler’s Vibrant Brushed Bronze finish lent itself perfectly to the palette. The rich brown colors are offset nicely with ivory tiles which are accented with bronze and Sonoma Tilemaker’s Tantrum glass tiles.

The family wanted a rustic/Italian feel that still had an updated/modern look to it. They also wanted to keep with the traditional style of their home and décor. Tumbled travertine backsplash added a rustic feel to the kitchen, but we kept the design pretty clean and simple for a more timeless look. We added some Sonoma tantrum glass detail behind the cooktop and behind the built-ins for a pop of color that played off the granite. For the cabinetry, we used Dura Supreme. A black distressed island, and an ivory paint w/ espresso glaze on the perimeter. The creamy St. Cecilia countertops added warmth and pulled the white and black cabinetry together, and added plenty of extra seating. The charming oil rubbed bronze hardware and lighting fixtures really play nicely off the black island. The new medium toned oak hardwood flooring throughout the entire house gives it a very warm and inviting feel. The new layout provides them plenty of space for multiple cooks so they’re family can all relax and be together in the space.
