The interior designer asked us to come up with a sample of faux wood to show the client in tones recommended to suit our client's taste. The end result of their approved samples was this 4-layer wood finish. We also recommended we add a bit of hand-painted artwork to the wood arch panel to give it a little extra interest. We gold leafed the crown molding, glazed the dining room walls red, the ceilings gold and the rest of the house walls the same soft gold faux. Pei-designed apartment tower to its original modernist design aspiration. The 1960s brutalist structure had lost its design purity during various renovations. The design team conducted a full renovation of the 11,000 sf lobby to create an array of on-site amenities for residents while respecting the building’s architectural heritage, taking cues from both published I.M. Pei works and other modernist interiors. JURY COMMENTS: A very respectful update of a project whose original design was showing its age. Much of the design of the space is beautiful, simple, and tasteful.

Virginia AIA Merit Award for Excellence in Residential Design | What appeared to be a simple, worn-out, early 20th century stucco cottage was to be modestly renovated as a weekend retreat. But when the contractor and architects began pulling away the interior wall finishes, they discovered a log cabin at its core (believed to date as far back as the 1780’s) and a newer addition (circa 1920’s) at the rear where the site slopes down. Initial plans were scrapped, and a new project was born that honors the original construction while accommodating new infrastructure and the clients’ modern tastes. The original log cabin was entirely concealed behind painted wood paneling on the interior and stucco on the exterior. Logs were cleaned with a wire brush to maintain much of the original whitewash and chinking between logs was carefully repaired, replaced and stained with tea to the perfect color. One of the log cabin’s original windows, boarded up when the 20th century addition was built, was revealed. Minimalist details were devised to contrast with the carefully uncovered and restored materials. A custom fabricated modern fireplace surround adds simplicity and clean lines as a contrast to the texture of the log walls.

A punch of color is added with a bright red splash fabricated out of acrylic paneling. This red accent is echoed in the globe chandelier suspended above the island. Unique sculptural hardware pieces in brushed nickel and black finish off the kitchen and add a touch of whimsy. To make the changes they wanted, the design team at Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes determined that the room would need to be gutted. All the partition walls had to go, as did the old whirlpool tub. And all of the plumbing and fixtures had to be relocated to new positions to meet the new design’s criteria. The clients previously replaced the bathroom windows with glass blocks. Thus, contemporary glass blocks were used instead of partition walls to add openness to this new bathroom layout. Large polished limestone tiles were used on the bathroom floors and walls, and stylish glass tiles were used as an accent. A free-standing oval tub adds to the room’s contemporary look and saves a lot of space as well. A two-person shower stall with a modern body spray shower system was also installed. Custom built high level cabinetry and vanities, and modern lighting—both recessed and hanging fixtures— contribute greatly to the success of the final project.
