Masterpiece Retreat: The Master Bathroom
The master bathroom embodies the epitome of tranquility. Luxe gold fixtures complement the double vanity mirrors, trimmed in a warm Gilded" finish, their elongated rectangular shapes softened by rounded edges. The vanity, painted in a “Slate" hue, offers ample storage and features two undermount sinks atop a Polarstone Pure Opal countertop. Materika sand matte floor tiles provide a soothing foundation, while Dolomite shower walls and a Starphire glass half shower door create a seamless, light-filled space.

The home-office includes a built-in flat wall monitor to use for long distance conferences and a computer area seen at the right edge of the photo. Both the center table and the computer desk can be hydraulically lowered into the rectangular recess (horikotatsu) in the floor beneath them. When the table and desk are raised, these recesses provide leg room when sitting on the floor.

Great room: This space consisted of four separate rooms before we took out all the interior walls. Exposed beams compliment the organic modern aesthetic. Skylights frame the overhanging trees of the forested hill beyond.

The tea table, constructed by Hiroshi Sakaguchi, is made of cherry wood and can be stored beneath the floor and covered with a custom-sized tatami mat. The cabinetry of the built-in closet kitchen (mizuya) is framed with Port Orford cedar. The panels are made of thin Western red cedar slats woven together (ajiro). The design in the solid panel at the top of the sink cabinet is hand carved by Sakaguchi-san.

Japanese Guest Room. The Ryokan styled Japanese guest suite, based on a traditional Japanese inn, provides for hosting guests overnight. The floor consists of tatami mats upon which futon bed rolls are spread out at night. Adjacent to it is a bathroom suite with Ofuro tub, an ante area, an enclosed seating porch, and a private outdoor deck with Japanese garden. The remarkable craftsmanship of the custom fabricated woodwork is highlighted throughout.
