Retro home bowling alley installed in a family recreation building in central Minnesota. Most of the bowling components were salvaged from an old commercial bowling center, and were restored to like-new, or in some technical aspects, better-than-new, condition. The over-lane ball return riser, rack, and capping were originally manufactured in the 1950s. The automatic pinsetter machines are Brunswick A-2 models, which were totally dismantled, cleaned, painted, and rebuilt piece-by-piece with the addition of many new parts. The masking units are Brunswick Gold Crown single-lane models, which were refinished with Granny Smith Apple Green vinyl, and outfitted with a modern LED "pindicator" system. The bowling alley features built-in shoe and ball storage, and a restored manual scorer's table with custom scoresheets.

Penza Bailey Architects designed this extensive renovation and addition of a two-story penthouse in an iconic Beaux Arts condominium in Baltimore for clients they have been working with for over 3 decades. The project was highly complex as it not only involved complete demolition of the interior spaces, but considerable demolition and new construction on the exterior of the building. A two-story addition was designed to contrast the existing symmetrical brick building, yet used materials sympathetic to the original structure. The design takes full advantage of views of downtown Baltimore from grand living spaces and four new private terraces carved into the additions. The firm worked closely with the condominium management, contractors and sub-contractors due to the highly technical and complex requirements of adding onto the 12th and 13th stories of an existing building.

The large-scale remodeling performed to create the Hill House entailed retrofitting the existing foundation to accommodate the engineering requirements for larger windows and lift-and-slide doors, and adding additional foundations for the screened porch. In addition, the main living area’s floor level was lowered in order to improve the view of the distant horizon while standing.

An existing screen porch area that got dirty, cold and windy in winter or too hot in summer. They could not enjoy the backyard and wanted a space in which they could feel more outdoors. We added a Four Seasons Sunrooms System 230 Aluminum walls under system to give a feeling of all glass that could convert to screens in seconds because all the windows are operable or removable in summer. This blended a technically modern sunroom in with the existing architecture and complimented their home.

The combination of the full glass wall façade and hip roof design provides tremendous light levels during the day, while the fully functional fireplace and warm lighting creates an amazing atmosphere at night. This pairing is truly the best of both worlds and is exactly what our client had envisioned. Acting as the full service design/build firm, Sunspace Design, Inc. poured the full basement foundation for utilities and added storage. Our experienced craftsmen added an exterior deck for outdoor dining and direct access to the backyard. The new space has eleven operable windows as well as air conditioning and heat to provide year-round comfort. A new set of French doors provides an elegant transition from the existing house while also conveying light to the adjacent rooms. Sunspace Design, Inc. worked closely with the client and Siemasko + Verbridge Architecture in Beverly, Massachusetts to develop, manage and build every aspect of this beautiful project.
