The Glass is the water line. The elegant early lines of the golden era of yachting owe much to the eye of the master tradesman.Half models of intended designs were carefully shaped by our early boat builders. Once happy with the shape of these half hulls, often only 18” or 2’ long, they would “loft” the lines onto the floor of their workshop and create full size plans of the intended boat from these early prototypes. All done with the keen eye of a true craftsman. “The Bailey is a tribute to the skill and passion of New Zealand’s early shipwrights”. It is with this attention to graceful lines and technique in mind, we created the Bailey Table. Using traditional techniques and tools such as the draw blade and spokeshave these tables are crafted by hand and eye to an almost silky, fluid finish. A joy to touch and view from almost any angle. Almost organic in touch and line, there are few straight lines to this sculpturally aesthetic piece. Located in the agricultural outskirts of Grand Junction, this project was designed as a forever home for our client to enjoy the views and live in the heart of her daughter’s ranch. This is the second home on the property, and being sensitive to the existing structures was key to the success of the project. Our client values privacy and maintaining the wide open nature of living within the farm lands that built the Grand Valley. We were able to be mindful of the existing home, as well as the distant neighbors, to create a mountain modern farmhouse, rooted in Grand Junction’s agricultural landscape. Design Concept One of the most prominent items on our client’s wish list was an abundance of natural light and a connection to the outdoor spaces. Without any natural features to provide shade to the home, we designed awning features, deep eaves and spacious porches to shield the large expanses of glass from the intense western Colorado sun. We designed well shaded clerestory windows to allow natural light to reach deep into the interior spaces and installed energy efficient, Low-E Weathershield windows to provide year round interior comfort. Our client also valued an open floor plan and durability of materials to make the home as maintenance free as possible. We installed tile flooring throughout for ease of cleaning, installed standing seam metal on the roof for longevity, and fiber cement board siding for durability. It is a harsh landscape in the Western Colorado sun, and we wanted our client’s home to withstand the tests of the desert. Aging in Place Because this was designed as a forever home, we used a number of unique design techniques to ensure the home was safe and suitable for aging in place. The most important technique we utilized was designing a “dropped” floor system allowing our floor to be level with the exterior patios. As in all of our homes, we utilized an energy efficient Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) stem wall foundation. This system also allowed us to easily drop our floor joists into it, eliminating any steps, big or small, going into the house. The seamless transitions not only provide safe maneuvering throughout the home, but also a contemporary flair on the farmhouse aesthetic. The positioning of the house relative to the existing home, large expanses of wood plank stamped concrete patios and 3+ foot wide doors throughout are only a few of the other approaches we took to make sure our client was safe and comfortable as they age in this home.

MPdL Studio designed this house with healthy living in mind, using materials and furnishings that meet or exceed current environmental standards. The project is an experiment in new ways to think about detailed brickwork, glass, millwork and cabinetry. For the dining room, MPdL Studio designed a walnut wood, digitally designed and fabricated table that could flexibly accommodate groups of varied sizes. The design features a scalloped edge that relates to the body of the person sitting at the table. The size and rhythm of the edge can comfortably seat 10 to 16 people. The divots along the center of the table were designed to receive three different sizes of the Georg Jensen BLOOM mirror bowls designed by Helle Damkjaer. The legs read as extensions of the divots for a futuristic, yet warm, effect. You would never guess that this table is digitally designed and fabricated. A stand out design move in the dining room is to balance the warmth of wood with the reflectivity of glass and chrome, mixing contemporary design with old-world techniques. The dining table is paired with Ask Emil Skovgaard chairs and an exceptional 1950s Dunbar woven-front credenza by Edward Wormley. Conversely, the walls between and around the windows are clad in a slightly frosted Bendheim mirror glass. This allows the wall to read as a singular element, and perceptually expands the size of the space. This use of glass sets the tone for the selection of the light fixtures, and other finishes in the room. In general, we place special attention to the way that window treatments transform a space and the dining room is a good example of our techniques. The wall to ceiling sheer curtains completely transform the effect of the room when pulled to a close, allowing the space to remain luminous, while accentuating the verticality of the space.

Walls; Fireplace Surrounds, Partition and Structural Walls, Concrete Bottle Nook beneath kitchen countertop: We wanted to recreate a wall that had fissures, cracks and veins that would resemble the cliffs that the house was constructed on. It should be noted that we were not so concerned with exactly replicating the surrounds, but only to give the feel/impression of the surrounds. The technique used to pour the walls was to randomly pour the concrete in the formed walls and lightly vibrate them as we wanted to keep some random air pockets to produce a bug holed rock look (too much vibration would limit the fissure effect). Once we made a first pass with the concrete in the wall…sometimes pouring a third at a time (or even two-thirds at a time depending where we wanted the fissure/fissures) we would stop and move the concrete pump to a different location and then we placed stones, shells etc onto the top of the irregular tops of the wall. In 30-45 minutes, after the initially poured concrete in the wall took a slight set, we would pour concrete again over the first pour which we dropped/placed rocks and shells on the top of the partially set up wall.
