Designed by Marc Jean-Michel of Reico Kitchen & Bath in Bethesda, MD in collaboration with Wisdom Construction, this Washington, DC kitchen remodel features Merillat Masterpiece kitchen cabinets in the Ganon door style in a Dove White finish with Calacatta Laza engineered quartz countertops from Q by MSI. The kitchen features unique storage in a smaller galley kitchen space by utilizing the toe kick area of the cabinets to create pull out drawer storage. A custom made vanity utilizing the space usually wasted at the toe kick by creating a drawer - extra storage is always helpful! And it doubles as a step stool for your little ones. This toe-kick drawer, in fact, is in our own home, and our 3-year old twins use it as a step stool to brush their teeth and wash their hands. It's a multi-purpose design solution that's worked well for our own family.

Unique design details found throughout this kitchen bridge the gaps between classic, modern, industrial, and eclectic. Rare and intricate combinations of tile, wood, steel, aluminum, and Dekton create a comfortable large kitchen with harmonious balance. Classic white cabinets with stainless steel toe kick are contrasted by the large walnut island with a taller coordinating toe. Floating in complete disguise is the 1.2 cm ultra thin countertop by Dekton rarely seen in a classic kitchen application. Walnut shelves float on the white stamped tin patterned tile and are grounded with the industrial stainless tambour appliance garage. The 3" thick floating bistro bar top by Dekton cantelivers nearly three feet with minimal visual support giving ample knee space to those who lounge at the table. Contemporary white high gloss Crystal cabinets with Cambria white cliff counter tops is striking. Adding black painted walls and large scale black tile floors make it even more dramatic. But with the addition of orange light fixtures and colorful artwork, the kitchen is over the top with energy. With no upper cabinets only floating shelves for display the base cabinets are well planned for each functional work zone. a. The “Cooking Zone” hosts the 60” range top (with hood) and is the heart of the kitchen. The ovens, coffee system and speed oven are located outside of this zone and use the island/snack bar as their landing space. b. The “Prep Zone” includes the refrigerator, freezer, sink, and dishwasher c. The “Entertainment Zones” has a separate sink and dishwasher, the wine cooler and beverage center. A desk off to the side of the kitchen with a large roll up tambour to keep any mess hidden. Also their robot vacuums have a charging station under the files drawers in the toe kick. Tying multiple floors together using 6”x36” dark grey wood-looking tile, laid on a staggered patterned worked well with the tile and concrete floors next to it. Two-toned cabinetry of wired brushed hickory with a grey stain wash, combined with maple wood in a dark slate finish is a current trend. Counter tops: combination of splashy granite and white Caesarstone grounded the display. A custom-designed table of ash wood, with heavy distressing and grey washed stain added warmth. Show custom features: Arched glass door cabinets with crown moulding to match. Unique Features: drawer in drawer for pot lids, pull out drawer in toe kick for dog dishes, toe space step stool, swing up mixer shelf, pull out spice storage. Built in Banquette seating with table and docking station for family meals and working. Custom open shelves and wine rack with detailed legs anchor the three sides of the island. Backsplash rail with spice rack, knife and utensil holder add more storage space. A floating soffit matches the shape of island and helps lower the showroom ceiling height to what would be found in a normal home. It includes: pendant lights for the snack bar, chandelier for the table and recess for task lights over the sink. The large triangular shaped island has eleven foot legs. It fills the unusual space and creates three separate areas: a work space, snack bar/room divider and table area.

Relocating to Portland, Oregon from California, this young family immediately hired Amy to redesign their newly purchased home to better fit their needs. The project included updating the kitchen, hall bath, and adding an en suite to their master bedroom. Removing a wall between the kitchen and dining allowed for additional counter space and storage along with improved traffic flow and increased natural light to the heart of the home. This galley style kitchen is focused on efficiency and functionality through custom cabinets with a pantry boasting drawer storage topped with quartz slab for durability, pull-out storage accessories throughout, deep drawers, and a quartz topped coffee bar/ buffet facing the dining area. The master bath and hall bath were born out of a single bath and a closet. While modest in size, the bathrooms are filled with functionality and colorful design elements. Durable hex shaped porcelain tiles compliment the blue vanities topped with white quartz countertops. The shower and tub are both tiled in handmade ceramic tiles, bringing much needed texture and movement of light to the space. The hall bath is outfitted with a toe-kick pull-out step for the family’s youngest member!

The existing spaces are elegantly decorated with an open plan, dark hardwood floors, and natural stone accents. The new, lighter, more open kitchen flows beautifully into the client’s existing dining room space. Satin nickel hardware blends with the stainless steel appliances and matches the satin nickel details throughout the home. The fully integrated refrigerator next to the narrow pull-out pantry cabinet, take up less visual weight than a traditional stainless steel appliance and the two combine to provide fantastic storage. The glass cabinet doors and decorative lighting beautifully highlight the client’s glassware and dishes. Every square inch must serve a function when you are downsizing. In this kitchen designer Carol Kornak replaced a desk area (a home office is located in another part of the home) with a beverage center for coffee, wine and other beverages. The location keeps traffic out of the main cooking area and allows guests to help themselves. The cabinets were custom painted a warm off-white to match the existing woodwork throughout the home. The glittery Cambria countertops complement the crystal pendant lights and crystal hardware.
