The homeowners were ready to renovate this basement to add more living space for the entire family. Before, the basement was used as a playroom, guest room and dark laundry room! In order to give the illusion of higher ceilings, the acoustical ceiling tiles were removed and everything was painted white. This couple was ready for some major changes in their home on north Euclid in Upland, CA. After completing their nursery last year, they asked for help designing their family room. Everything had to go! The brick fireplace, the TV niche next to the fireplace, the wet bar…none of it portrayed my client’s taste or style in any way. They requested a space that was modern, not fussy, clean and contemporary. I achieved this look by transforming the fireplace wall with limestone and paneled walls with hidden storage behind where the TV niche used to be. Other features that helped in this transformation are updated recessed and accent lighting, fixtures, window coverings, sleek, contemporary furnishings, art and accessories. The existing carpet was replaced with dark wood flooring that seamlessly meets the new limestone fireplace hearth that runs the distance of the entire focal wall. A roadblock popped up when we found out the SMALLEST WALL in the house that was part of the existing wet bar turned out to be where the main plumbing and electrical were housed. Instead of spending the exorbitant amount of money that it would’ve cost to remove this wall, I instead turned the unused wet bar into a functional feature with oodles of storage on one side and a wall niche on the opposite to display art. Now this space is a functional and comfortable room in their house where they can relax and spend time with family.

Basement finished to include game room, family room, shiplap wall treatment, sliding barn door and matching beam, new staircase, home gym, locker room and bathroom in addition to wine bar area.

When my client had to move from her company office to work at home, she set up in the dining room. Despite her best efforts, this was not the long-term solution she was looking for. My client realized she needed a dedicated space not on the main floor of the home. On one hand, having your office space right next to the kitchen is handy. On the other hand, it made separating work and home life was not that easy. The house was a ranch. In essence, the basement would run entire length of the home. As we came down the steps, we entered a time capsule. The house was built in the 1950’s. The walls were covered with original knotty pine paneling. There was a wood burning fireplace and considering this was a basement, high ceilings. In addition, there was everything her family could not store at their own homes. As we wound though the space, I though “wow this has potential”, Eventually, after walking through the laundry room we came to a small nicely lit room. This would be the office. My client looked at me and asked what I thought. Undoubtedly, I said, this can be a great workspace, but do you really want to walk through this basement and laundry to get here? Without reservation, my client said where do we start? Once the design was in place, we started the renovation. The knotty pine paneling had to go. Specifically, to add some insulation and control the dampness and humidity. The laundry room wall was relocated to create a hallway to the office. At the far end of the room, we designated a workout zone. Weights, mats, exercise bike and television are at the ready for morning or afternoon workouts. The space can be concealed by a folding screen for party time. Doors to an old closet under the stairs were relocated to the workout area for hidden storage. Now we had nice wall for a beautiful console and mirror for storage and serving during parties. In order to add architectural details, we covered the old ugly support columns with simple recessed millwork panels. This detail created a visual division between the bar area and the seating area in front of the fireplace. The old red brick on the fireplace surround was replaced with stack stone. A mantle was made from reclaimed wood. Additional reclaimed wood floating shelves left and right of the fireplace provides decorative display while maintaining a rustic element balancing the copper end table and leather swivel rocker. We found an amazing rug which tied all of the colors together further defining the gathering space. Russet and burnt orange became the accent color unifying each space. With a bit of whimsy, a rather unusual light fixture which looks like roots from a tree growing through the ceiling is a conversation piece. The office space is quite and removed from the main part of the basement. There is a desk large enough for multiple screens, a small bookcase holding office supplies and a comfortable chair for conference calls. Because working from home requires many online meetings, we added a shiplap wall painted in Hale Navy to contrast with the orange fabric on the chair. We finished the décor with a painting from my client’s father. This is the background online visitors will see. The last and best part of the renovation is the beautiful bar. My client is an avid collector of wine. She already had the EuroCave refrigerator, so I incorporated it into the design. The cabinets are painted Temptation Grey from Benjamin Moore. The counter tops are my favorite hard working quartzite Brown Fantasy. The backsplash is a combination of rustic wood and old tin ceiling like porcelain tiles. Together with the textures of the reclaimed wood and hide poofs balanced against the smooth finish of the cabinets, we created a comfortable luxury for relaxing. There is ample storage for bottles, cans, glasses, and anything else you can think of for a great party. In addition to the wine storage, we incorporated a beverage refrigerator, an ice maker, and a sink. Floating shelves with integrated lighting illuminate the back bar. The raised height of the front bar provides the perfect wine tasting and paring spot. I especially love the pendant lights which look like wine glasses. Finally, I selected carpet for the stairs and office. It is perfect for noise reduction. Meanwhile for the overall flooring, I specifically selected a high-performance vinyl plank floor. We often use this product as it is perfect to install on a concrete floor. It is soft to walk on, easy to clean and does not reduce the overall height of the space.

There are a few pictures of not only the bed but also the view. This is one of our favorite examples of foot of the bed use to hide the TV. The TV is an 55 inch OLED LG flat screen. Their is a compartment that also hides the BluRay and cable box. The operation of the lift kit, TV, cable box, Blue Ray is controlled by a single Universal remote. Push one button and TV, electronics turn on and rise at the same time. Client also uses Apple TV, Roku and their smart TV together to maximize viewing pleasure. The furniture design made by Cabinet Tronix is called the Oceanaire. This one in particular has a very high end piano grade white lacquer finish. This is more expensive however the clients expectations were thankfully exceeded. Cabinet Tronix who has specialized in high end furniture in combination with motorized remote controlled pop up lift furniture since 2002. These systems are made to order based on clients needs versus having units ready to pick from. This type hand holding makes it so the client can have any design, the TV size they want and understand the difference of what their decisions reflect the proportions of the furniture and its size. Have a system particularly at the foot of the bed brings on a few instant situations. The client here wanted a component section to hold the DVD player. Now, I suggested against it as the furniture would be taller than the bed... however that is what he wanted. Most do other suggested ideas I propose with the DVD player so the furniture can be up to 4.5 inches lower. Anyways, loved this project and client was so kind to provide the pictures. These systems are popular in all aspects of homes such as room dividers, in great rooms, side of fire places, center of the room out side by itself and under verandas. A grand room gets a grand transformation! With the addition of dramatic, sky-high window treatments, carved architectural mouldings, and custom upholstery pieces, this family room is ready to entertain this season!

Penza Bailey Architects was contacted to update the main house to suit the next generation of owners, and also expand and renovate the guest apartment. The renovations included a new mudroom and playroom to accommodate the couple and their three very active boys, creating workstations for the boys’ various activities, and renovating several bathrooms. The awkwardly tall vaulted ceilings in the existing great room and dining room were scaled down with lowered tray ceilings, and a new fireplace focal point wall was incorporated in the great room. In addition to the renovations to the focal point of the home, the Owner’s pride and joy includes the new billiard room, transformed from an underutilized living room. The main feature is a full wall of custom cabinetry that hides an electronically secure liquor display that rises out of the cabinet at the push of an iPhone button. In an unexpected request, a new grilling area was designed to accommodate the owner’s gas grill, charcoal grill and smoker for more cooking and entertaining options.
