Photo credit Michael Partenio This new home takes advantage of a beautiful hilltop site. The outdoor spaces function as an extension of the house and support the family’s casual, sports-oriented lifestyle. The design, for a family of seven, provides spaces for individual privacy and family gatherings. The design challenge was to incorporate a number of sustainable features into the design. The south-facing roof is integrated with a 5-kilowatt photovoltaic system, generating electricity for the home and furnishing emergency backup power. The heating is exclusively radiant with high efficiency boilers partially burning biofuel. Measures taken to produce an efficient building envelope include a drainage plane behind the siding, spray foam insulation, and high performance, insulated window glass.

Our client came to us to build this custom white oak dining table in such a way to maximize seating around this table so we created an oval shape that sits on top of a pedestal. Eliminating the corners of the table allows for chairs to be placed all around without wasting any space. The pedestal gives ample leg room. It seats 10 comfortably but as always our pieces can be customized to be larger or smaller depending on your space. The color we came up with was a 5 part coloring process which made this one a challenge to say the least. But the depth of color and unique tones made it all worth it in the end. To ensure that the table top stays flat over time, we recess steel c channels that tie back to the base but still allow the table top to move with seasonal weather changes. This ensures that this table will be around for generations to enjoy meals and special occasions and we feel honored to be a part of that. This table was hand made in San Diego, California.

The more public spaces - foyer, den, formal dining room - are located at the front of the home. The Dining room is located off the Foyer and features a large frameless corner window, a custom full-height floating hutch with bookshelves, and perimeter recessed lighting. The dining table is a large honed concrete slab with blue steel legs, and the benches are custom-welded steel with upholstered cushions.
