But when the owners came across architect Mike Collier, they had found a partner who was to make the impossible possible. The tower, which had been empty for decades, underwent radical renovation work and was extended by a four-storey cube containing kitchen, dining and living room - connected by glazed tunnels and a lift shaft. The kitchen, realised by Enclosure Interiors in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, with furniture from LEICHT is the very heart of living in this new building. Shiny white matt-lacquered kitchen fronts (AVANCE-LR), tone-on-tone with the worktops, reflect the light in the room and thus create expanse and openness. The surface of the handle-less kitchen fronts has a horizontal relief embossing; depending on the light incidence, this results in a vitally structured surface. The free-standing preparation isle with its vertical side panels with a seamlessly integrated sink represents the transition between kitchen and living room. The fronts of the floor units facing the dining table were extended to the floor to do away with the plinth typical of most kitchens. Ceiling-high tall units on the wall provide plenty of storage space; the electrical appliances are integrated here invisible to the eye. The original house was built in 1951 for a Jewish immigrant family from Libya. At first it was a tiny unit, typical of the houses built by the Jewish Agency in those years. Through the years, as the family grew, the house was enlarged. In the renovation process I preserved its central elements which represented it along the years and were an integral part of its form and content. Into those I weaved new content to accommodate it for its new lodgers – a cook and a designer. As the walls and the ceiling were exposed, a unique visual form was created which led to a clear deliberation as to the proceedings of building the house. The oldest part, which belonged to the first unit, contains the kitchen, dining area and bedroom. The room at the entrance, which was a later addition, is now singled out by a "carpet" of grey floor tiles. On the other end of the house which contains the living room, wooden roof beams belonging to the original house had been exposed and preserved, as well as the old book-shelves, which were an important core of the original house. This country gentleman’s chest is a tangible slice of history. It was purchased from the family of the farmer who made the chest in the early 1900’s. It is completely made of pine with dowel joints and circular blade marks on the rough cut boards in the drawers and backing. The drawers slide easily and three of the drawers have locking mechanisms. Typical of older pine furniture it had been faux painted to look like a higher quality of wood. But it was tired and cried out for updating. It has been refreshed with Fusion Mineral Paint, glazed and sealed. New hardware and escutcheons were added as well as lincrusta which was inset into the side panels giving the chest a western flair.
