Perched atop a 75-feet forested ravine and overlooking a protected salmon stream, this low-lying house seems to be floating in the wilderness. On the more exposed side, sunny and connecting to the street, the distinctive silhouette of gingkos and squared-off beeches, mounding lavenders and graphic maiden grasses, play against expanses of raw concrete and accents of reclaimed, century-old barn wood. On the sheltered side, shady and sloping down to the stream, a variety of dark green foliages merge into the surroundings.

This is an example of a large traditional backyard concrete paver driveway in Vancouver.

Reaches 3 to 5 ft. tall, 4 ft. wide in 10 years; taller with age. Partial to full sun. Goshiki translates from Japanese as "five colors". Its new leaves emerge red and quickly turn green. The green leaves are daubed with spots of creamy white, gray-green, and yellow-green. This lovely evergreen selection makes a great accent or hedge.

This water wise garden in the lower avenues features a decorative front entrance. In the back yard we see raised bed planters, a pergola, retaining wall, water wise perennials and many vegetables and herbs for use in their restaurant. Rick Laughlin
