Imagine a chair you could really nestle into; that felt like you were sinking into a basket full of pillows. Well, it already exists, and it’s called the Womb Chair. Designed by mid-century mastermind Eero Saarinen to be just that—the Womb Chair mimics the cosseting of, well, a womb. Always given to experimentation, Saarinen wanted to investigate how comfort could be defined by the shape of a chair, and not necessarily by overstuffed cushioning—as in the case of most armchairs of the time. Taking his cues from fibreglass boat building, he decided to use a material previously unheard of. In a feat of remarkable engineering, the shell of this chair is in fibreglass, moulded over with foam, and flawlessly supported by splayed steel rod legs. The enveloping sculptural expression of the Womb Chair continues to be one of the most recognized representations of Saarinen’s legacy and the organic modernism movement.

Our clients were relocating from the upper peninsula to the lower peninsula and wanted to design a retirement home on their Lake Michigan property. The topography of their lot allowed for a walk out basement which is practically unheard of with how close they are to the water. Their view is fantastic, and the goal was of course to take advantage of the view from all three levels. The positioning of the windows on the main and upper levels is such that you feel as if you are on a boat, water as far as the eye can see. They were striving for a Hamptons / Coastal, casual, architectural style. The finished product is just over 6,200 square feet and includes 2 master suites, 2 guest bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, sunroom, home bar, home gym, dedicated seasonal gear / equipment storage, table tennis game room, sauna, and bonus room above the attached garage. All the exterior finishes are low maintenance, vinyl, and composite materials to withstand the blowing sands from the Lake Michigan shoreline.

Living room - large transitional open concept light wood floor living room idea in Portland Maine with a standard fireplace and a stone fireplace

This one-acre property now features a trio of homes on three lots where previously there was only a single home on one lot. Surrounded by other single family homes in a neighborhood where vacant parcels are virtually unheard of, this project created the rare opportunity of constructing not one, but two new homes. The owners purchased the property as a retirement investment with the goal of relocating from the East Coast to live in one of the new homes and sell the other two.
The original home - designed by the distinguished architectural firm of Edwards & Plunkett in the 1930's - underwent a complete remodel both inside and out. While respecting the original architecture, this 2,089 sq. ft., two bedroom, two bath home features new interior and exterior finishes, reclaimed wood ceilings, custom light fixtures, stained glass windows, and a new three-car garage.
The two new homes on the lot reflect the style of the original home, only grander. Neighborhood design standards required Spanish Colonial details – classic red tile roofs and stucco exteriors. Both new three-bedroom homes with additional study were designed with aging in place in mind and equipped with elevator systems, fireplaces, balconies, and other custom amenities including open beam ceilings, hand-painted tiles, and dark hardwood floors.

A freestanding soaker tub gets plenty of natural light from a large arched window. To the left, heated towel bars keep bath towels toasty and within reach. Glass shelves holding decor and bath necessities sit in a niche to the right. Michael Hunter Photography.

Hidden from the hustle and bustle, an incredible pantry space is tucked just off of the kitchen and is amongst the crowning jewels of the space. It features open shelving, ample counterspace and boasts windows which bring in fantastic light - unheard of in a pantry!

Octagon windows are unusual, but not unheard of. They are usually found in converted attics and provide a beautiful detail to the home's facade. They can be covered with plantation shutters or cellular shades.

Most projects involving wire are for my projects with construction companies who are building an entire apartment complex, but wire for homeowners is definitely not unheard of! While there are a few different types of wire shelves out there, most highly recommended is "Super Slide", which allows for a long run of hanging rod without interruption for hangers to slide along, shown here:

The Douglas Nance Palma Collection features sloping, carved shapes. This combination of teak strength and sumptuous cushions provide a graceful vision of comfort. The Palma Collection could be the perfect outdoor lounge furniture.
The Douglas Nance philosophy about teak furniture is different than most. While all around we see designs and styles that minimize the use of teak wood by substituting with aluminum or adding sling fabric material, we have gone the other direction. Slim and sleek won't be found in descriptions of our furniture. Instead you'll read masterful, bold and rock solid. Everything in the design of our styles has been about making a statement with teak. We've added thickness to our parts to give unheard of stability and strength. We've also added extra dimension to provide more room and comfort than any teak designs we have ever seen.
