Ann Lowengart Interiors created a family-friendly environment while adhering to the homeowner's preference for streamlined silhouettes. Located in the British Properties of West Vancouver the garden of this unique property was designed to reflect the traditional character of the home and community, while integrating a range of amenities for the modern-day family. The property is backed into a forested parkland with access to the mountain trails and nature while exposed on the south with sunny views of the city and water. The feeling as you approach the home is tranquil and natural, the sound of water rushing down the waterfall in the courtyard is fresh and soothing. Lush displays of woodland plants and specimen trees blend the urban and native environments. In the rear garden, an expansive Brazilian hardwood deck floats above the lower patio and pool deck. The swimming pool sits parallel to the house, creating a spectacular mirror to the sky and surrounding foliage. It wasn’t necessary to overthink things when Axis Mundi designed interiors for an apartment at Brooklyn’s glass-sheathed 1 Grand Army Plaza, the luxury building by Richard Meier already endowed with all the “starchitect” bells and whistles, as well as drop-dead stunning views of Brooklyn, the harbor and Prospect Park. What did require considerable aptitude was to strike the right balance between respect for these assets, particularly the panoramas, and livability. The all-white scheme doesn’t just complement Meier’s own aesthetic devotion to this purest of pure hues; it serves as a cool backdrop for the views, affording comfortable vantage points from which to enjoy them, yet not drawing attention away from the splendors of one of the world’s most distinctive boroughs. Sleek, low-lying Italian seating avoids distracting interruptions on the horizon line. While being the new kid on the block, this home was designed to be a good neighbor to it's older surroundings. Progressive in materiality, fenestration and detailing but sympathetic in scale and form. It provides the homeowners privacy from the street but is very open to the backyard and the southern sun exposure afforded there. While the home is not certified, it subscribes to many Passive House principles which means it provides a very comfortable environment with good indoor air quality as well as reducing energy consumption. To further tread lightly on the planet, the home is all electric thereby directly excluding the use of fossil fuels. Alternative energy is provided by geothermal and solar photovoltaic systems.
