The Bel-Air House sits above Hollywood, along scenic Mulholland Drive, the storied thoroughfare that acts as a winding referee between the compact density of the San Fernando Valley, and the more ex-urban conditions of Los Angeles. In contrast to the client’s weekend beach house, here the client envisioned a home that could share equally in the energy of the city, and the rustic qualities of canyon living. The resulting home is both minimal and refined—its abstract forms read against the wilder aspects of its nominally natural setting.
As a patron of music, and the arts, the client’s creative interests suggested the overall design approach: A simple yet sophisticated backdrop for the presentation of recitals, and the display and appreciation of beautiful artifacts. The house avows a museum-like attitude—the rich but restrained material palette draws from the colors and textures of the Santa Monica Mountains, and opposes natural with refined, polished with honed, quietly confirming a reverential aspect to this “temple on the hill”.
The focus of the house is a dark and silent pool. Intended as a space of emptiness, the pool is an enigmatic statement—at once a source of origin for the house, as well as its apparent conclusion. The spatial aspects unfold from this moment, with the various rooms revolving around this essential void. The pool and its open rotunda echo the reservoir in the canyon below the house, while the ocean beyond ultimately underscores the house’s strong commitment to water.
Simple stone walls, taut rooflines, and disciplined and minimal detailing allow the home to act as an armature for the client’s personal expression of taste and creativity. In complement to the client’s Mussel Shoals House, which suggests a relationship with the vast, and ever-widening horizon, the architectural resolution of the Bel-Air House emerges from the sheltered and enveloping emotion of the canyon.

Polhemus Savery DaSilvaArrowhead Point is a classic Shingle Style home located on a peninsula with vast views of the surrounding cove and the ocean beyond. The dominant gable and entry way greet passersby and welcome visitors to the seaside home. The entry, framed by flattened columns, is purposefully situated to the side, helping to integrate the master bedroom wing and the horizontality of the house. Upon entering, the commanding water view is immediately visible. As dynamic as the vistas, is the design of the house itself.

Julia Contacessi Fine Art6x5 foot original work "Saint Helena" was created by Julia Contacessi in 2016. A vast and expansive view of the coastline, this oversized abstract transcends time, taking one back to the remote volcanic outpost of Napoleon Bonaparte’s exquisite exile. From the perspective perched atop Jacob’s Ladder or Diana’s Peak, imagine taking in the dramatic views of the South Atlantic Ocean.
As in past works like “Undertow” and “Aurora,” Julia is focused on the contrasting nature of the organic and how that can provide an escape to a dream-like place. K. Dakin Design Inc.This second home outside of Sebastopol, CA is perched on a ridge with sweeping views of Bodega Bay. The stunning scale of this environment also provides challenges to creating the feeling of shelter - making the house a home. Dakin approached this project with sight lines in mind, placing a large boulder so that it anchors a “near” view from inside the home to balance vastness of the ridge and ocean beyond.
This attention to the owner’s perspective is also expressed through a layering of climate appropriate plants and California natives seen through the kitchen window. California evergreens such as camellias, silk tassels and madrones harmonize with existing sequoias, redwood groves and a wildflower meadow on site. The diversity of this climate zone is on display in this project, which also features succulents, Douglas fir and an olive grove. In addition to ocean weather, populations of gopher and deer on site made it necessary for Dakin to protect plant roots with baskets and select plant species resistant to deer.
