Project Overview: This intensively-designed small project by MQ Architecture expanded on a functional outbuilding to make something beautiful, matching the fantastic wooded location directly across the Hudson River from West Point. From MQ Architecture: “This project entitled a surgical demolition of an existing shed and the erection of a small ancillary building. The old structure housed the electrical and communications utilities of a large compound, and the new project had to preserve the location and function of all this equipment, therefore some walls and floor levels are set from the beginning. The program required two different type of users, therefore we decided to split the building in two, allowing for a separate circulation for each group. The upper piece houses the electrical room and the team quarters, while the lower portion holds two individual restrooms for visitors. The project sits in the middle of the forest therefore we chose charred wood to make it blend with the surrounding nature. On the other hand, the polycarbonate façade brings natural light and privacy to the interior. After getting to know him during our initial consultation, I knew that I wanted to feature his love of the outdoors, his global travels, and his passion for running. Using a mix of finishes, textures, styles and gem-toned colors against the existing gray neutrals allowed me to do this. The geometric patterned rug plays off of the large-scale blue zebra pattern on the chair, beautifully. The transitional lines of the emerald green velvet sofa compliment the more modern lines of the tan leather sofa, and both provide ample seating for guests. The petrified wood coffee table is both functional and sculptural, as is the walnut bookcase. Metal accent tables in different finishes add to the curated look of this room. A bar height table and chairs were added to the adjacent room not only to provide an extra eating area, but to also help tie the two parts of this open space together. Lastly, several of the client’s many race bibs and running medals were displayed art-gallery style all along the narrow hallway. This once empty living room is now alive with bold color and style that uniquely reflects this client’s personality. Rodwin Architecture and Skycastle Homes Location: Boulder, Colorado, United States We helped the clients find a beautiful lot in North Boulder, then crafted this modern 3,300 s.f. house to be their dream home. The clients asked for a warm modern style home, with an open floor plan that connected to the outdoors and took full advantage of the rare lot. We sited and engineered the house for optimal passive solar design, while simultaneously capturing unobstructed panoramic views of the Flatirons from both levels. The home’s simple, clean lines reflect their unpretentious, easy-going character. The gourmet kitchen, dining and Great room are flooded with sunshine from the 9ft high ceilings and walls of glass. A gracious covered west porch flows seamlessly out from the Great room through a giant bank of sliding doors, creating a fantastic opportunity for indoor/outdoor living.
