Bathroom - traditional kids' ceramic tile and white floor bathroom idea in Richmond with shaker cabinets, white cabinets, a two-piece toilet, blue walls, an undermount sink and marble countertops

In a wooded area of Lafayette, a mid-century home was re-imagined for a graphic designer and kindergarten teacher couple and their three children. A major new design feature is a high ceiling great room that wraps from the front to the back yard, turning a corner at the kitchen and ending at the family room fireplace. This room was designed with a high flat roof to work in conjunction with existing roof forms to create a unified whole, and raise interior ceiling heights from eight to over ten feet. All new lighting and large floor to ceiling Fleetwood aluminum windows expand views of the trees beyond. The existing home was enlarged by 700 square feet with a small exterior addition enlarging the kitchen over an existing deck, and a larger amount by excavating out crawlspace at the garage level to create a new home office with full bath, and separate laundry utility room. The remodeled residence became 3,847 square feet in total area including the garage. Exterior curb appeal was improved with all new Fleetwood windows, stained wood siding and stucco. New steel railing and concrete steps lead up to the front entry. Front and rear yard new landscape design by Huettl Landscape Architecture dramatically alters the site. New planting was added at the front yard with landscape lighting and modern concrete pavers and the rear yard has multiple decks for family gatherings with the focal point a concrete conversation circle with central fire feature. Everything revolves around the corner kitchen, large windows to the backyard, quartz countertops and cabinetry in painted and walnut finishes. The homeowners enjoyed the process of selecting Heath Tile for the kitchen backsplash and white oval tiles at the family room fireplace. Black brick tiles by Fireclay were used on the living room hearth. The kitchen flows into the family room all with views to the beautifully landscaped yards. The primary suite has a built-in window seat with large windows overlooking the garden, walnut cabinetry in a skylit walk-in closet, and a large dramatic skylight bouncing light into the shower. The kid’s bath also has a skylight slot with light angling downward over double sinks. More colorful tile shows up in these spaces, as does a geometric patterned tile in the downstairs office bath shower. The large yard is taken full advantage of with concrete paved walkways, stairs and firepit circle. New retaining walls in the rear yard helped to add more level usable outdoor space, with wood slats to visually blend them into the overall design. The end result is a beautiful transformation of a mid-century home, that both captures the client’s personalities and elevates the house into the modern age.

In the living room, a massive black Venetian glass chandelier suspends dramatically from a 12-foot tray ceiling, offset by detailed triple-crown molding. Custom wall molding adds texture to charcoal gray walls. Black granite frames the ventless fireplace, where black fire glass is used to conceal the gas plumbing lines. A flat screen television and integrated speakers are among several devices comprising a home automation system that wirelessly controls technology by a wall-mounted iPad or any smartphone. A long modular sofa with custom silk pillows anchors the living room seating arrangement, which is flanked by low-profile lounge chairs and a heavy slatted metal coffee table atop a large cowhide rug. Metal nesting tables and porcelain garden stools quickly double as extra seating. Louisiana artist Joseph “Jojo” Jilbert was commissioned to create a custom sculpture for the living room. Towering at more than eight feet, “Nebulas 1” is forged from fire in his signature style using reclaimed metal objects. The welded creation is modeled after the famed Pillars of Creation in the Eagle Nebula, where light and heat from young stars create columns that are trillions of miles long. The sculpture is burnished to a deep patina and engraved with intricate scrollwork. Large Fiddle Leaf Fig ficuses bring color and texture to the opposing corner, offering a natural foil to the spiny details of the artwork.

This builder grade master bathroom is transformed into a spa-like oasis that serves as the perfect backdrop for escaping from life’s little “tugs and pulls.” From its white wood vanity cabinet with full extension soft-closing drawers and doors, to its 2cm toffee quartz top with dual porcelain undermount sinks and single column faucets, this bathroom’s panache is evident from the moment you enter. Its curbless walk-in shower showcases a Schluter inline stainless steel drain and frameless 10mm thick tempered glass enclosure. Additional features include a tiled niche to house and display product, wall-mounted rain showerhead and rail-mounted 3 jet handheld wand. The free standing Maax bathtub rests on a bed of flat ground toasted biscuit coloured river pebbles – with the surrounding walls clad in 12” x 24” polished porcelain and marble/glass mosaic trim. The shower floor is dressed in the tub’s pebble accent, while the remaining floor boasts 6″ x 36″ Italian driftwood inspired porcelain. Schluter waterproofing and decoupling membranes are incorporated throughout to protect the shower walls and entire bathroom floor. All vanity, shower and bathtub hardware are of a matching design with a polished chrome finish. A one piece closed trap dual flush elongated toilet with soft-closing seat is installed. A full size frameless bevelled mirror adorns the vanity cabinet creating the impression of boundless space and possibilities while the translucent, shimmering backsplash subtly makes its presence known. All in all, style, charm and luxurious finishes are the order of the day in this memorable bathroom transformation!

After completing The Victoria Crest Residence we used this plan model for more homes after, because of it's success in the floorpan and overall design. The home offers expansive decks along the back of the house as well as a rooftop deck. Our flat panel walnut cabinets plays in with our clean line scheme. The creative process for our window layout is given much care along with interior lighting selection. We cannot stress how important lighting is to our company. Our wrought iron and wood floating staircase system is designed in house with much care. This open floorpan provides space for entertaining on both the main and upstair levels. The custom banquette, white oak millwork, and open-grain cypress ceilings modernize the home. A large island allows for entertaining and multiple chefs to work in the kitchen. The trellis structure above the kitchen gives a structure for artificial lighting but allows for natural light from the transom windows to filter into the centrally-located kitchen. The goal of this project was to upgrade the builder grade finishes and create an ergonomic space that had a contemporary feel. This bathroom transformed from a standard, builder grade bathroom to a contemporary urban oasis. This was one of my favorite projects, I know I say that about most of my projects but this one really took an amazing transformation. By removing the walls surrounding the shower and relocating the toilet it visually opened up the space. Creating a deeper shower allowed for the tub to be incorporated into the wet area. Adding a LED panel in the back of the shower gave the illusion of a depth and created a unique storage ledge. A custom vanity keeps a clean front with different storage options and linear limestone draws the eye towards the stacked stone accent wall. Using light flooring in the form of natural lime stone 12x24 tiles with a linear pattern, it really draws the eye down the length of the room which is what we needed. Then, breaking up the space a little with the stone pebble flooring in the shower, this client enjoyed his time living in Japan and wanted to incorporate some of the elements that he appreciated while living there. The dark stacked stone feature wall behind the tub is the perfect backdrop for the LED panel, giving the illusion of a window and also creates a cool storage shelf for the tub. A narrow, but tasteful, oval freestanding tub fit effortlessly in the back of the shower. With a sloped floor, ensuring no standing water either in the shower floor or behind the tub, every thought went into engineering this Atlanta bathroom to last the test of time. With now adequate space in the shower, there was space for adjacent shower heads controlled by Kohler digital valves. A hand wand was added for use and convenience of cleaning as well. On the vanity are semi-vessel sinks which give the appearance of vessel sinks, but with the added benefit of a deeper, rounded basin to avoid splashing. Wall mounted faucets add sophistication as well as less cleaning maintenance over time. The custom vanity is streamlined with drawers, doors and a pull out for a can or hamper. A wonderful project and equally wonderful client. I really enjoyed working with this client and the creative direction of this project. A Spanish-style guest bathroom remodel in Westlake Village abounding in old-world charm. French encaustic floor tiles make a bold graphic statement in this tastefully simple space. The earthy color palette of the tiles is a perfect complement to the raised-panel DeWils cabinetry, stained in Honey Wheat glaze. The honed Caesarstone countertop and an undermount sink maintain a low profile, and the Old Bronze wall sconces and tapered square knobs in Flat Black stand out.
