A recessed copper water wall, approximately 14 ft. wide and 11 ft. tall, was recently installed at a contemporary home in Laguna Beach, California. The textured copper water wall and stepped catch basin were inset into an existing plaster wall and concrete steps. Old lawn was transformed into a drought-resistant garden offering ever-changing colors and textures. Turf removal rebate from the local water agency helped offset the cost. A new stucco wall with iron gates were built to create an enclosed porch/courtyard to give homeowners a much-needed buffer between their home and the hustle and bustle of a big city . This was constructed as an addition to an existing brick residence dating from the 1960's. The client requested a traditional character. The design program included a heated breezeway connection to the existing residence, garage parking for two cars, a weaving studio/guest room above, and a greenhouse to support the site's extensive landscaping.

With an established formal garden, stone fireplace, seating and dining terrace, the clients wished to enhance their outdoor program with the addition of a pool, spa, and lounging terrace. A thoughtful master plan and careful attention to detailing allows the additional landscape improvements to blend seamlessly with the existing program. The water elements and landscape lighting design for this property add dimension in both the day and evening. The pool is carefully sited to reflect the custom lattice screening, millwork, and elegant planted urn when not in use for swimming, while the tranquility of the spa is enhanced with the sound of water rushing over its custom stone weirs.
