Mom's Design BuildThe customer called us wanting a better fire pit area, a water feature, and a “tropical vacation” feel to the space. After looking at many different inspiration pictures I found that they reacted most to old-school water features – ponds and streams of rock with sheer falls – instead of more modern designs so that added to the design challenge. In the back yard there is no place to “hide” the birth of a water feature or even make it feel like a natural part of the landscape so the goal became to design a non-contrived but non-modern water feature with a resort, tropical feel. What says tropical resort more than a lazy river and tiki torches?

Dig Your Garden Landscape DesignLagoon-side property in the Bel Marin Keys, Novato, CA. Entertaining and enjoying the views were a primary design goal for this project along with replacing the lawn with CA native and low water plants and a total renovation. The project includes a large camaru deck with built-in seating. The concrete steps and pavers lead down to the water's edge. I included a sunken patio on one side and a beautiful Buddha statue on the other, surrounded by succulents and other low-water, contemporary plantings.
