Inspiration for a large contemporary open concept light wood floor family room remodel in Chicago with a music area and white walls

Our clients' new home came with a dedicated library space where we renovated the fireplace, created a closed bar area, and wallpapered the ceiling in a William Morris design. The library works as the husband's office, a social spot near the window surrounded by lush greenery, and an intimate sitting area before the fireplace - perfect for an aged whiskey on chilly evenings. We used two vintage rugs to delineate these spaces, using the clients' existing vintage furniture. The clients also brought a collection of interesting books and ephemera they'd collected throughout their travels, which made styling the bookshelves a dream!

We continued the colorful tile and paint selection into the small, second floor laundry room. The tile is porcelain that looks like encaustic, so you get the great design but functionality of porcelain. We matched the blue from the tile and painted the window and door trim, baseboards, and interior door for a fun pop of color. Floating shelves offered additional storage space without taking up precious square footage.

The butlers pantry has ribbed glass upper cabinets with a custom arched design to be cohesive with the doorways throughout the home. The backsplash is a marble arabesque mosaic installed above quartzite countertops.

The first thing I did in designing the room was choose a soothing wall color. The rest of our home was bright white except for an accent wall in our kitchen so I decided this was the one room I could paint entirely. I chose Benjamin Moore's Grey Owl, a warm but still neutral gray. I love this color. It transformed the room and seemed to subtly change color as the light changed throughout the day.
