As Begg and Baxter pruned and cleared the yard, they were delighted to find that underneath the jungle were the bones of a well laid-out garden. They learned that a previous owner had been a landscaper, and that his schist walls and paths were just waiting to be unearthed. They rescued the sunniest part of the garden for an outdoor patio with a retro cone fireplace.

Ingrid Geldof Design opened up this small kitchen to let in the light, permitting the use of divine matte black oak joinery and a brushed black granite top. The Perrin & Rowe Ionian tap in English bronze and black completes the industrial look.

This 1920s cottage was mostly in its original condition. The transformation was sensitive to the inherited beauty and charm of the cottage – the whimsical brass porthole, original teacher’s blackboard and shellacked match-lined walls - while incorporating highly practical elements for a modern lifestyle. To provide much-needed storage, the laundry was converted into a scullery, with extra benchtop space and an oversized sink. The scullery also discreetly houses the fridge/freezer and microwave.
