Our designs grow from a specific sense of place. Organizing each project to celebrate the strengths of its site, ranging from sun exposure, to views, to water’s edge, we develop our architecture to capitalize on these assets, while creating inside spaces that are comfortable yet exceptional experiences for our clients. We consider ourselves to be problem-solvers, reconciling the constraints of lifestyle, budget and site, while staying true to our design philosophy. EXPERIENCE In our thirty years of practice, we have designed residential and academic work throughout New England, as well projects ranging from Florida to Canada. Our specialty has been creating exciting design work in an historic vocabulary, with many projects in Historic Districts throughout New England. Principal John Battle is a graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Design. His designs have been widely featured in various magazines and television broadcasts. STORIES George, a client, really wanted to categorize me throughout the job— traditionalist, modernist, etc. At the end of the job, he declared me a Humanist. “You are always thinking about how it was to use the spaces”, where did you want to read the Sunday paper, what do the handrails feel like, how is this going to work for the family, etc. All that added up to the label of Humanist, which I graciously accept. Much better than a style label. They have hired us for 3 more projects over 15 years.

John excels at translating a vision into amazing places which have been the sites of some of our family's happiest moments. He remains flexible and responsive while carrying a strong point of view. They have an exceptional sensitivity to site issues including site protection and preservation, siting of structures, site development and impacts, and alternative solutions to problem solving. We have worked together from permitting/regulations, to conceptual designs, to construction, and through to completion. Their willingness to consider feedback and make plan adjustments has provided a smoother process for their clients, builders, and all team members. Of particular note, John and his staff have provided prompt responses and details for any and all questions, which is especially helpful during construction, when crews are already on site. I highly recommend them without reservation!

I have been involved with several Battle Associates projects. As an interior designer I have worked on materials specification, lighting plans, kitchen design and often times on follow up projects choosing fabrics, furniture and other final interior finishes. These follow-up projects would not be possible without the initial success of the build and the relationships formed in that process. I have always found John's architects and contractor teams to be easy-going perfectionists. The quality and workmanship is clear in their beautiful end product, but these guys are all such a pleasure to work with. Attention to detail is not just a design ideal, but a project management style, and it makes all phases of construction and communication run smoothly. I have worked on a 16,000 square foot lake house and a small antique restoration with this team, and no matter the duration or budget of the job, the work is superb and the clients are happy.

My husband I have worked with Battle Associates on three separate projects. W chose to work with John because he has an aesthetic for old homes and new construction and a design sense that seamlessly combines the two. The additions John created to our historic farmhouse appear to be part of the original house. And yet they accommodate the lifestyle of a modern family beautifully. We wouldn't have done one thing differently! And that's thanks to John's know-how and ability to deal with ... creative... clients!

We have done two major projects with Battle Associates and both turned out fantastic and added value to our home. They don't take a cookie cutter approach to their work. They worked with us to incorporate our ideas and desires and very often presented wonderfully creative and unique concepts. They then work closely with the builder to make certain that the deliverable matches the vision. I also admire the fact that they operate the business with low overhead. No fancy office space and perks that get passed on to the customer. If you want a high-touch, personalized approach to creating something truly unique Battle Associates is your architecture firm.

My husband and I hired John to design our new kitchen addition. It was an interesting challenge due to our location in the Historic district and the difficult layout of our home. John captured both of our ideas in the proposed design which was fantastic and pleased the Historic Districts Commission as well. It was such a pleasure to work with John! Not only did he answer questions and solve design issues on the spot, he was able to help define the “big picture” and subtle nuances of our project. John also listened to both my husband and me and helped guide us through the design process of our renovation. We are absolutely thrilled with the result.

I have worked with John Battle and his firm for a number of years completing more than a dozen projects together. All of the projects have been very successfull adding to John's and my list of happy clients. As a builder, I value John's candor and straight forward approach to construction challenges. John brings a savy eye for design and a weathered pragmatisim for working with the realities of residntial construction. From my vantage point as a builder, I have always seen John be frugal and wise with clients' budgets and yet willing to ask questions and genuinly listen for answers. I like the fact that John does not have a set group of design solutions; on each of the dozen projects we have built, John has drawn unique ideas and eagerly explained why this particular idea is right for this particular client and this particular house. This keeps us on our toes and always eager to see what the next SK drawing will reveal.

In 2012 we purchased a 120 year old house in our town's historic district. The previous owner had lived in the house since 1941 and very little had been done in that time to update any of the systems. The house did not have a garage, needed a comprehensive restoration and needed to have the kitchen updated to modern standards. As our town's historic district had a reputation of being very challenging to work with, we knew that we needed an architect with an extensive knowledge of historic buildings and an expertise on how to work with town boards. Also, as we would be living out of state during the renovation/ addition, we were looking for an architect who could effectively manage the project and communicate ongoing status and issues in a clear concise manner. John Battle showed up on day one ready to go. He quickly recognized how to best preserve the historic elements of our house while at the same time cost-effectively modernizing the structure. He and his team worked up a creative design for the garage that was in harmony with the existing house, and one that was ultimately approved by the Historic District. I can not emphasize this part of our project enough: dealing with Historic District had the potential to be extremely stressful, but John's calm and persistent demeanor successfully navigated this. His plans for the main house modernized the kitchen and turned it into the epicenter of family activity - his design came out so well that it ended up on the cover of This Old House magazine. Ultimately we are in an wonderful old house that thanks to John and his team, retains all of the charms from another time but offers all of the modern comforts. I would strongly recommend Battle Architects.
