David Whitney Architect

David was an excellent partner in our home renovation project. He is exceptionally organized, sets expectations well, and is thorough. During the design phase he drew up a few options so we could get a sense of what we wanted. Then once we picked a direction, he helped us think through all of the many decisions in a way that wasn’t overwhelming. He broke it out nicely and had good recommendations. David even joined us in picking out tile, cabinets and counters and once again helped us navigate the many options. Throughout the entire project, David’s communication was clear, consistent, and concise with both us and the contractor. We can’t recommend David enough. It was a great experience start to finish!!

David meticulously planned our recent basement renovation project and stayed engaged and supportive throughout the entire reconstruction process. David set up a standing weekly meeting between him, our contractor, and me to discuss thoughts and questions as they arose. This helped avoid misunderstandings and gave me a consistent setting in which to ask questions. David also gave my husband and I, as well as our contractor, a weekly "to-do" list spinning off of these weekly meetings, which kept us all on task. This helped us all to make decisions in a timely manner. David was thoughtfully present when we needed advice. He also set up appointments at various vendors, and met me at each one to talk through potential design choices such as cabinetry, flooring, etc. David was personally recommended to us by friends who likewise thought he was wonderful. He even sent us chocolates when the project was complete! We are very grateful to know him and to have had the pleasure of working with him.

David was an absolute pleasure to work with and we highly recommend him! David was creative, thoughtful, and detail-oriented throughout the project, navigating any unexpected challenges with confidence and helping shepherd us through the process. He was great about sharing pros/cons and making suggestions without imposing on our decisions. He kept us completely on track with our timeline and helped facilitate seamless communication and work planning with the contractor. We bought a small cape-style house in Quincy that hadn't been updated in decades, and we wanted to add a floor to the house, so we knew we needed a lot of help remodeling it. We contacted David Whitney on the recommendation of a good friend. David was amazing from the start. He provided clear process for the design phase, helped us with decision-making, and listened to all of the things we wanted that were peculiar to us. (For example: Can we build a dog bath?) He guided us in specifying every part of the design (exactly which siding, roofing, windows, doors, and fixtures we wanted). When it came time to get bids for the project, he met with each builder and helped us choose our GC. He was helpful in every stage of the project: submitting for permits, meeting HERS energy requirements, and even interior details like selecting tile, cabinets, and counters. He insisted that we meet with the builder weekly throughout the project, which turned out to be critical. At these meetings, he noticed when things weren't being done to plan (missing window, pocket door being hung backwards), so they could be corrected while it was still easy to fix it. And, he got along with the GC and his subcontractors, so we could solve the few thorny problems that arose in a productive way. We came in right on budget, and the house is beautiful. It looks like an original house, not a property that has had a major addition. When we compare our experience to our friends', we know that working with the right architect saved us way more money than we paid him (and probably months and months of time). If you're thinking of doing your project without an architect to save money, don't. Get David Whitney, and do it right.

If you’re using an architect who is not David Whitney, or just using a contractor, you’ve made the wrong choice. David helped us transform our early 1900s two-family into a modern, beautiful space that is just a pleasure to be in yet is still true to its original character. David is not just an architect — he is a partner throughout the entire process. David went on so many trips with us throughout the process (to design our kitchen, to pick out tile, to pick out countertops), created spreadsheets for us to make our selection and decisioning of fixtures easier (hello, lighting), reviewed the spreadsheets, and came onsite weekly for a regular meeting with us and our contractor. David is a gem and I feel so lucky to have worked with him.

Our home renovation project was a large one and David spent a great deal of time with us and was invested in making this renovation exactly what we had hoped for while also staying within budget. We can’t imagine using any other architect. His expertise and focus not only gave us the home of our dreams but also delivered it to us on time!

David was our architect for a full renovation of our home and he was terrific. From working us to figure out a design for our home, guiding us through the permitting process, helping us select a contractor and overseeing the renovations, David made everything really easy for us and helped us understand what to expect at every step of the way. His designs really captured what we hoped our house would be and now that we've been living here for a few weeks we couldn't be happier!

Jan and I happened upon David on this very site.... I was trying to find an architect who would help us with a new home build in New Brunswick, Canada. This all actually dates back to 2020 - and we all know what happened around that time! With the Pandemic came delays, increased costs because of the supply chain struggles, and frustration over its' effects on all of our lives! David offered his services quickly and was steadfast throughout. I would say to Jan, "Could you imagine the outcome if left to our own devices!". Honest, with and with a gentle way, he was not afraid to point out his concerns and then would give solid advice, every time! I'm sure we tested his patience at times, but he was always willing to listen then steer us in the right direction. He has created for Jan and I our dream retirement home and we are thrilled beyond belief. David was the one who picked our great builders, Mark and Shaun and his reasoning was simple... "It's because I believe I can work with them"! It was a great partnership, and I truly believe they learned alot from David's keen eye and attention to detail. He never hesitated to speak on our behalf but always did it respectfully! Investing in David's services was some of the best money I have ever spent. We cannot recommend him highly enough and will be forever greatful! It is now 4 years down the road and we get the keys in September! I consider David, Mark, and Shaun to not only be dependable craftsmen, but look at them as both friends and extended family! We recently completed a major addition to our home (added a partial second floor). David was remarkably kind, attentive, and patient as we struggled to figure out what we wanted and what we wanted it to look like. He is very detail oriented and responsive to questions and concerns. He is exceptionally talented and thoughtful in his design. Our home looks startlingly different from where we started, but you cannot tell it was an addition - the home is completely cohesive thanks to the design. David also connected us to one of his trusted contractors who did stellar work. Throughout construction David managed the project with us, and helped us understand the process and assure our contractor was building the project as designed. People talk about home construction projects as if they are uneneding nightmares, and it was certainly stressful and at times overwhelming, but thanks to David it was manageable, completed on time, and with a beautiful, timeless result.

David is a true professional that took an incredible amount of care with our project. We worked with him through 2022 and 2023 to redesign, renovate and add to our 1914 home. He was deliberate, detail-oriented and went to great lengths to preserve the character of our home, something that was important to him and to us. There were so many things, large and small, that we just never would have thought of without David's expertise and guidance. He was with us every step of the way, not just in the redesign phase and the end result is a home that we absolutely love. He takes a lot of pride in his work, every last detail, something that I've found to be very rare. We have many friends who have had renovation projects go off the rails and this was the opposite of our experience working with David. Would recommend to anyone who has the opportunity to work with him.

I have worked as a contractor on a number of projects with David. His designs are always well thought out and the plans are incredibly thorough with an impressive attention to detail. Having a solid, detailed set of plans that don’t require a lot of mid project changes or alterations helps to keep our projects on time and on budget for our clients. I also appreciate Davids process when it comes to his involvement in the project during construction. His participation in weekly onsite meetings with the client and contractor helps to address any questions or issues we might run into. Additionally he is easy to reach and available if there are any questions or concerns about the implementation of the design as we move through the building process. He is a very strong advocate for his clients throughout the construction phase of the project. He is good at sorting out issues on the fly and understands the construction process. David was truly dedicated to our project from start to finish. He started by listening to us - what we were hoping to gain from adding on to our house. He came up with a really creative solution that involved adding space and converting some existing space to create a sunroom and master suite. As the project progressed, David gave us advice, but also left it to us to design things how we wanted. He helped us choose high quality materials and suggested timeless design elements. He recommended reliable builders and worked with us every step of the way, ensuring the project was executed to expectations. We had weekly meetings with David and our builder, which ensured strong communication and kept us informed of progress. David had incredible attention to detail - he cared if a faceplate wasn't fully screwed into the wall! The end result is a beautiful addition that we love spending time in.
