We hired Excel Custom Contractors in January 2022 to do some work around our pool and on our patio. We gave them $5,647.63 as a down payment and the work was supposed to start by March 2022 per their contract with us. We were given the run around for several months as to when they were going to start. Then they ghosted us. After numerous follows up attempts, we were told they had supply chain issues. we were understanding of this challenge, but it took months for us to get that information, a few months after the project was scheduled to start with no new start date, we asked for month to get plans/drawings for the project and measurements on how the project was going to be laid out, as well as the size and placement of the patios and retaining walls. Instead of blue print plans, we got a artistic rendering for half of the project, with the retaining wall positioned right up against our pool fence. When we requested our down payment refund and mutual agreement to cancel the project, Excel agreed to cancel the project and returned $3,008.25 or our down payment, stating we still had to pay for the fencing they ordered, but had not yet received. We agreed to pay fencing. When the fencing was delivered it was the wrong fencing (even though we provided the manufacture, model name and number and color), so we refused delivery. We had to follow up multiple times in an attempt to get the rest of our down payment back. Excel ordered more fencing. We no longer had a contract with Excel and didn't want them to order us any fencing. At the end of December we received another check from Excel for $1,187.95. Excel stated that they paid a contractor for the drawing so they would not refund that money. While the drawings were never correct/accurate, we agreed that we would cover that expense, although if they truly paid $1,451.43 for inaccurate artist renderings, they should be pursuing a refund from their contractor. At this point, we are done with Excel and we are out $1,451.43 and 10-12 months of wasted time. I would never hire this company for anything Buyer Beware.

We are very happy with our new deck. Excel’s attention to detail was very impressive. They kept us informed as to what was happening and time frames. Due to shortage in supplies this year, it took longer to get materials but they kept us in the loop. Luke, our project manager, did a great job, as did Trent and Joe, who built the deck. We couldn’t be happier and will definitely recommend them to friends.

Our 50s era home has a nice front porch, but the wrought iron railings and uprights were always rusty, no matter how often they were painted. We thought two stylish columns would look better and be more open.
There are many good contractors, but most don't take on small half day jobs like ours. Excel Custom Contractors not only took on the job, they helped with size and style decisions, found a supplier, and then installed the new columns as soon as they arrived. It turned out even better than we imagined. Looking out our picture window is now a panoramic view, not a scene framed in a rust. They did a great job, we couldn't be happier.

Rob McDonald and his team were great from the early stages of designing our new deck to completion. No issues with the crew or quality of work. We were given daily updates on what work was done and what to expect the next day. I would highly recommend Excel Custom Contractors, LLC

We hired Excel to build a three-season room for us earlier this year. We talked w/ them in late winter and they assured us we would be one of the first projects on their schedule once the weather broke and it would be a 2-3 week project. This led us to expect completion by May at least. We understand the weather last spring was not very cooperative but they did not arrive on the job site to begin demo until the END of May. There was no explanation of why they did not get started until that time. Then they showed up intermittently and finally got everything competed expect the screens/windows by early JULY. We then kept hearing, "Oh it will be a couple of weeks until the windows come in." A couple weeks later it was the same story, "A couple more weeks." By late AUGUST we had had it. We were then informed that their original supplier for the screens/windows went out of business and they had to find a new supplier who, of course, was very busy due to getting a lot more orders as the competitor was out of business. They kept insisting the delay was not their fault. Maybe not, but the complete and utter lack of communication was most certainly their fault. If they would have explained the circumstances as soon as they became aware of them, we would not have been looking out our back door at a half completed room and becoming more and more irate. Finally, at the end of August we were told our screens/windows were on a truck to Wisconsin and they would be installed over Labor Day weekend. We were out of town over the holiday and expected to return to a completed room. Of course not. We were then told some installation hardware was incorrect so they had to obtain the proper parts; but naturally they had not informed us of this additional delay. Our room was not completed until SEPTEMBER 5. Our back yard was unusable for the entire summer! While the finished project is perfectly fine, their lack of communication and inability to take responsibility for the problems leads to a definite 1 star rating. The owner kept repeating, "It's not our fault!" Well, it was not our fault either and some good will on their part (a minor discount perhaps? Or improved communication) to make up for the repeated and ridiculous delays would have went a long way toward smoothing over our irritation. And then, just to demonstrate their disregard for their customers, we received an email asking about getting their final payment just 2 days after completion (give us a chance to use the space and see if any final issues need to be addressed!) AND they emailed again 3 days later! Excuse me, I did mail it, give some time for the mail to arrive! (But believe me I was tempted to wait on the final payment - they made us wait 4 months longer than we should have to get a completed room, why should they not have had to wait a little for the final payment?)

Once again I apologize for the delay in the project completion, as I have done numerous times previously. I knew you were frustrated at the end of the project with the time it took to complete the entire project, as we were also. I did want to detail here the events of your project and give a fair depiction of the progress. If you or anyone else reading this would like proof of any of these dates, please do not hesitate to ask and I would be happy to provide them. Besides the delay in the custom sunroom window manufacturer, we also dealt with one of the wettest seasons on record. The timeline of 3 weeks would be accurate for the actual build time of the sunroom only, not including the wait time for the windows to be manufactured and delivered (in which we measure and order only after the sunroom is built to ensure the proper fit). Then consideration must be given for extra construction time was required to demo the existing structure, add new foundation(subcontractor and his schedule), frame the new deck, additional framing inspection, plus the patio pavers were all added to the project which certainly would add to the overall completion timetable.
I am also very glad that you are pleased with the final outcome of the project. And with our Lifetime labor warranty, free annual inspections and the $1279.63 Reward Dollars you earned from the project, there is real value added. The original contract we were able to give you $1134.77 off the project, plus when the decision was made to rebuild the entire deck structure we also allowed you to apply $933.11 in Reward Dollars off that portion of the project, which is against our policy regarding the Reward Dollars. For they earned on the current project and applied towards future projects only, never in progress projects.
Lastly, we would also like to make note that we upgraded the sunroom by raising the entire roof from the original plan of a 6’ tall wall along the back yard to almost a full 8’ wall height, giving you a much better view of the backyard and water feature. The windows were then obviously 2’ taller were more expensive and we upgraded your roof rafters to a larger more impressive size, both at no additional cost to you. Plus the repairs to the siding underneath and behind the original deck and the extra work raising the roofline were all completed at no additional cost to you.
2/28 contract signed for a July 2019 start (we started over a month early!)
4/5 measure meeting to review job and contract
It was determined at the measure that the dilapidated state of existing deck framing would not properly carry the new sunroom and that the entire deck needed to be rebuilt, an additional set of steps and door was requested

7/6 Saturday - received email punch list
7/8 Monday – sent email thanking for the punch list and stating we will address them when we are back to finish.
8/11 Sunday – received email about the disappointment of the progress with incorrect timeframes of when things were completed and that you couldn’t enjoy your deck?
8/13 Tuesday – sent email apologizing again and to clarify the actual timeline of the construction and reminded that we started a full month ahead of the agreed upon schedule. Also reminded you that we never order the windows until the room is built to ensure they are the exact fit. Also reminded you that we found out late in the season that Styleline window manufacturer was purchased by Living Space Sunrooms in Ohio and that they were in the process of moving their production plant. They also told us it would be a couple weeks to get the windows manufactured, but then they emailed us back to state in actuality it would be over 2 months to get our product once they were up and running – which they could not give us a firm date. So we did switch manufacturers once we had the information and the new manufacturer was so back logged because many other companies around the country that normally buy from Styleline were also buying from them and pushed their production times to about 6-8 weeks. I also stated that I was told that the windows were to ship from Florida on 8/14 and take up to a week to receive them and that we would be there as soon we get them. I reminded you that I stated it would be about 3-4 weeks since our last conversation during the first week of July until we would get the windows, but apologized again if I wasn’t that clear. But then reassured you that you will be happy and enjoy the final product.
8/14 Wednesday - received email stating the angst was because I did not communicate well or update during the past 4 weeks? But what should I have said more than what I said “it was going to be 3-4 weeks”?
8/19 Monday – sent emailed stating that I just found out the windows did not ship the previous week and that I was working on getting an answer. Also stated that in over 15 years of using this product that we never had any issues like this.
8/22 Thursday – sent emailed that I just received word that they shipped and that we should have them next week.
8/27 Tuesday – sent emailed that the windows will be delivered tomorrow and the guys will be there Thursday to install them and the electrician will be there Friday to finish the electrical as long as he can get inside for final connections. Received email back stating that you will be out of town and the electrician will need to be scheduled the following week.
8/29 Thursday – sent guys to your home and discovered our supplier did not send out all our windows. Installed as many as we could. Missing some parts as well.
9/2 Monday – received email of frustration that all the windows were not installed.
9/3 Tuesday – sent email reply that I too was out of town until late Monday night and that I did not find out until then that all the windows were not delivered and installed. And stated that I was checking into it and my supplier did not know why they did not deliver them all the week prior? Also confirmed that they were being delivered to your home that morning and that our guys were on their way to finish them now and the electrician will complete his work tomorrow.
9/4 Wednesday - electrician finished and the job was Completed
9/7 Saturday – received email stating that you saw we completed everything this past week and you wanted to settle up with us. (I never requested the final payment)
9/10 Tuesday – sent emailed back confirming the guys did indeed finish last week Wednesday. Received email back that the final check was mailed today. I replied again with an apology for all the delays with the window manufacturer and I hope that you do really enjoy your new space.
I really feel we did an exceptional job communicating during the entire process and that we take pride in our work, our suppliers and the final project. That is why we are excited to offer a Lifetime Labor Warranty plus coming back free every year for inspections of our work so you can be assured we stand behind what we produce. All our projects are custom and not cookie cutter, so every part of the room is made specifically to fit your house. That is why sometimes it might take a little longer to build. Considering all the extra work we did, rain delays and the month delay with the window manufacturer, the timeline to actually work on your project only comes down to less than 6 weeks for a beautiful custom built sunroom. The deck was usable after the first two weeks of construction and was available to be used the entire duration of the project.
By this review, it sounds like you may not use us again in the future, so we want you to know that we can give your remaining $346.52 in Reward Dollars to any not profit of your choice. Just let us know.
And once again I apologize for the delays that were clearly out of our control and I am also very pleased that you are happy with your new sunroom!

Amazing is how I would describe our experience with Rob McDonald and the crew of Excel Contractors. In today’s fast-paced society, it’s difficult to find businesses that still serve their customers with both quality work and a caring attitude. This company really lives up to its name in that Rob and his crew exceeded our expectations and truly Excelled in our finished deck project as well as several other projects we’ve had them do for us since meeting him at last year’s Home Show. Rob was extremely helpful in all phases of the project from the initial planning to suggestions during the project and then finishing on time and within budget. Rob showed us a variety of material options and gave us good suggestions for things within our price range. As with any major project, there were a few glitches, but Rob and his crew were right there to make sure things were done correctly and to our complete satisfaction. His crews were friendly, showed excellent craftsmanship with attention to detail and would clean up the job site at the end of every day - they were great to work with as well. We would highly recommend Rob for any project as he has great character, is honest, reliable, and trustworthy with good communication skills. We not only ended up with a great deck, but a great value from an outstanding company. When Rob says “you’ll be happy with the finished project”, you can count on Excel Contractors to do everything they can to make that happen.

Rob and his team did excellent work building a privacy fence and a large 20' x 25' deck. Rob was available to answer any questions or concerns day or night and the work is top quality. I would highly recommend Excel Custom Contractors. I've already hired them for my next project.

After I used Excel Custom Contractors for a cedar privacy fence, I invited them back to install all of my windows, doors, and trim. When I had ordered the wrong size trim for my craftsman style windows, Rob had made some innovated suggestions that actually gave me a better look than I had first envisioned. I was very happy about that. Rob knows his craft well and honestly, I would put him up against the very best in his field without hesitation. I would definitely recommend them to anyone interested in home remodeling/building.
