About Us

I have a small architectural practice in Eugene and the Willamette Valley (www.gtresidential.studio). With degrees in architecture, structural engineering and fine arts, I have a wide-ranging approach to residential design. Having worked for years with premier architectural practices in Austin and Philadelphia, I have deep experience in custom residential design. For the previous 19 years my work in design-build companies in Texas and Oregon rounded out my background as an architect with a balanced approach to both aesthetic design and practical construction concerns. My areas of experience include kitchens, bathrooms, whole house remodels, outdoor living designs, additions, new homes and a variety of renovation projects. Stylistically my range is as wide and far as are my clients' homes: from Queen Anne Victorian to Craftsman Bungalow to Mid-Century modern, Ultra Modern and more. My design work over the years as been recognized with many awards, including local and regional NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry) Awards, a national Chrysalis Award, Qualified Remodeler and Professional Remodeler awards. My work has been featured in many magazines, including This Old House, Trends, Architect Magazine, Custom Home, Qualified Remodeler, Eugene Home and several features here on the Houzz website. Note: The projects included here include work in Eugene and Corvallis, but most are in Austin, where I practiced for many years before relocating. When not designing, I can be found baking pies (see www.instagram.com/southbysouthwest), painting or taking advantage of Oregon's amazing hiking and biking opportunities--especially some of the Scenic Bikeways.

Our decision to work with Gregory Thomas and CG & S Design Build was one of the best we have ever made. We have been in our home for many years, and as we have grown older the twelve steps we have to take to enter or leave the house became a challenge. We decided to explore getting a lift. CG & S and Gregory took on the challenge. He is so talented and so easy to work with and was very patient with all of our questions. He designed a beautiful space in our garage to house the lift, and we use it daily. He also designed a beautiful new front porch and front door for us. The project was a big success. It was lovely experience working with all of the people at CG & S especially our architect Gregory Thomas!

Gregory helped us with a major addition and renovation on our 1920’s house. He was great with communication and design, but we particularly appreciated his anticipation of problems and his ability to make the permitting and construction work smoothly. Thanks to his excellent planning and design, and calm demeanor, what is often a fraught and challenging process was surprisingly pleasant.

Working with Gregory was a pleasure throughout our extensive remodel. Starting with our older house with it's small basic footprint, Gregory listened to our needs and re imagined the space in ways we had never considered. He was always available to address any concerns or problems with alternate ideas and suggestions if the need arose. Also Gregory worked seamlessly with our contractor and all the people involved with the project -- which made for a very enjoyable experience. Now we have a home that feels functional, spacious, and full of light. We are very happy in our "new" home and feel so grateful to Gregory for all he did to make that happen.

Gregory was easy to work with. Importantly he understood what I wanted and especially important - he understood my concerns about adding to an old and unique styled house. He gave good input, many suggestions. I trust his judgment. Communication with Gregory and the entire CG&S team was great throughout the process. CG&S and Gregory are quality ! I would highly recommend CG&S design-build and Gregory.

Thanks so much, Kevin. I really enjoyed working along you on the challenge of adding onto your historic cottage. And I think our construction of it is really striking in its appearance.

We found Gregory to be helpful, personal, and professional. We enjoyed our trips to the local businesses and valued his advice. We look forward to having Gregory remodel another room in the future.

My remodel with Neilkelly was completed beautifully. Working with Gregory Thomas, contractors and subcontractors was a good experience. I had never done a remodel and was nervous as to what to expect but Gregory worked with me through the whole process and now I have a beautiful remodel.

We worked with Gregory when we did and extensive rebuild/remodel of our home in Austin, TX. He is a very creative and detailed oriented architect. He listened to all of our concerns, added great ideas and helped solve problems. He was very responsive and always available. When things got tough with our contractor, he stuck with us and helped navigate the project to completion. We love our home and were more than satisfied with the job he did.

Thanks Martin. Your home is one of my favorite designs, and I am happy you continue to enjoy it!

We've lived in our home for nearly 30 years, and Gregory has designed three remodeling projects. He possesses a rare combination of artistic sensibilities and a deep understanding of how people inhabit spaces. He is deliberate and thoughtful in his approach to design, and as a result our home has become increasingly more beautiful and, importantly, more livable. My wife and I comment often on how well our home "works" for us. All of Gregory's insightful designs are carefully crafted and in keeping with the style of the original home. One would be hard pressed to discern the features of our current home that were not part of its original design. As important as his vision and skill as a designer are, Gregory is a joy to work with. His calm and patient approach engender feelings of trust and collaboration. I cannot imagine a more thoughtful, inventive, and capable designer who is also such a kind and generous person.

We had the privilege of working with Gregory twice in a ten year period. We loved our location, but our 1950s ranch home was too small for our growing family. I contacted Gregory, and he came back with an amazing plan for our new master suite, creating the perfect space despite numerous constraints such as property line spacing restrictions, the presence of a huge majestic live oak and the existing house structure and style. After the third child arrived we once again needed space. I contacted Gregory, and he instantly remembered my house layout and proposed we go up and add on a second story. This was a large undertaking, and everyone told us merely to buy a new house, but we loved our location, and now nothing we looked at compared to our master suite. We truly love our new/old home, and I cannot imagine having gone through this process with any other architect. Gregory listened to the design or aesthetic concerns I had, but--more importantly--he listened to what I needed to live in my home. The lighting, the storage and the flow are perfect for our family. Gregory's professionalism and talent created a home that is tailor made for our needs. The master suite was designed and built in 2008, and the second story add on commenced in 2016 and was completed in April of 2017.

Thank you! It was fun working with you and your family twice in a decade, and I feel fortunate that I was given both opportunities.. I love that the design works so well for you!

We were fortunate to be able to work with Gregory on an extensive addition to our home and I would recommend him highly. He guided us through each step of the process, including developing our program of requirements. Based on the information and images we provided, he was able to do a thorough needs assessment and synthesize the information we gave him to determine a clear vision. His design and detailing skills are incredible, and this is balanced with a practicality and groundedness with regard to usability, flow and cost. We were “wowed” with the beautiful result. Due to his meticulous attention to practicalities and detail, we were able to get a home that has grown with our family and continued to serve us well. We are thankful to Gregory on a daily basis when we look around our surroundings.

Thank you! I really enjoyed working with you and Ben. I am pleased to have designed the project for your family to be--and, that as they have come into the world, the design has worked so well for you!

We hired Gregory to design a complete renovation of our kitchen, dining, and living areas. He's talented, detail-oriented, and a pleasure to work with. His ideas were fresh and creative, and we couldn't be happier with the design. You won't find a better listener or a more diligent professional, and I highly recommend him.

Comment from Gregory Thomas Residential Architecture:

Elizabeth, it was a joy working with you and your husband. The fact that your project won a national Chrysalis award for Kitchen remodeling in 2011 was a nice confirmation of the success of our collaboration!

Victoria Bryhan

Gregory Thomas designed and oversaw the remodeling of my kitchen, the Corvallis Blue Kitchen as seen in his projects. He listened well and understood what I wanted, helping me refine my ideas and blend them with his. His design changed the kitchen without changing the footprint which shortened the job. Work started and was finished on schedule. While things such as under counters drawers for china storage will allow me to age more gracefully in place, that the new kitchen functions well is topped by the beauty of the space. Photos can be seen in his projects.

Comment from Gregory Thomas Residential Architecture:

Victoria, it was wonderful working with you, and your kitchen is one of my favorites ever! I so love the blue tile you selected, and the details we were able to do in the stainless counters and sink. Truly, the whole ended up being greater than the sum of the parts as it all came together--a lovely kitchen in so many ways!
