Tom Flach earned undergraduate degrees in Economics and Psychology from Vanderbilt University before obtaining a Master of Architecture from Virginia Tech. We worked with Kohlmark to do an addition onto our house along with a renovation to our second floor (two bathrooms, flooring and paint for four bedrooms, light fixtures, ect). We had never done anything like this, and working with them made the process so much easier. Our project manager, Greg, was fantastic. Constant communication, weekly meetings and walkthroughs. Any problems that popped up were quickly resolved professionally and efficiently. The project was finished in a timely manner and once construction began the ball never stopped rolling. Would (and have!) recommend KohlMark to anyone and will use them again if we pursue anymore projects in the future. All the thanks to the team over at KohlMark we love our new and updated space!

This was the second major project at our property with KohlMark, and we couldn't be happier. We had a detached garage with entertainment space designed and built from the ground up, a full high-end kitchen remodel, and a reconfiguration of space in our master bedroom. KohlMark expertly managed the project from initial design concepts through completion. Thanks to Tom, Stephen, Wade, Linette, and Bill for a fabulous experience and a result that we look forward to enjoying for many years to come! Highly recommend KohlMark.

The project involved new construction of a two-story brick addition in Great Falls. Our goals included complementing the architecture of the existing home, and taking advantage of the home’s southern exposure and hilltop elevation. Tom Flach worked with us on the plans then Kohlmark took on the construction. The 2000 sq. ft. addition includes a 2nd master bedroom, sunroom, mudroom, garage, basement, balcony and porch. The addition matches the existing home nicely, with nearly indistinguishable brick, windows and doors. When you start on a big project you are never sure if the end product will turn out as you have planned. With Kohlmark, they made our vision into a reality and we could not be more pleased. From our first meeting with Kohlmark during the design phase to the last, the experience has been wonderful. They listened to what we wanted in our addition, provided expert guidance on items that they felt would not work and acted as a true partner throughout the design and build process. Derek, their PM, went out of his way to make sure the final product was exactly what we envisioned and was invaluable throughout the construction.

We are very close to occupancy of our new county house in Rappahannock County, VA, which was designed by KohlMark Architects and built by KohlMark Builders. We could not be more pleased with the home and with our choice of this design-build group. We have appreciated a great working relationship with the architect (Tom Flach) and the construction project manager (Stephen Smith). They have been responsive to questions, and from the beginning of the construction, we had a standing weekly update call with Stephen, which helped us to understand the status and what to expect next. The construction took place during very challenging times – pandemic and supply chain issues. KohlMark anticipated and worked proactively to overcome these challenges – and kept us in the loop throughout the process. We are very happy to recommend KohlMark, and have already done so to several friends.

We would not recommend. They started strong but essentially abandoned our project (started mid April and scheduled to be complete 1July 2022) as early as June. By September when they hadn't finished they sent no more than 1 person a few times a week -- we suspect because they were sending their people to more lucrative projects. By October they pretty much stopped coming at all. Every draw was paid. Ultimately we made the decision to take a loss on the incomplete project ($40,000 balance of a $380,000 project) in order to move on from this Design-Build firm. Bottom line is that the quality of work is absymal, much of the work will need to be redone. Custom is possible (at least with our GC and his Supervisor) only if it can be purchased from Lowe's. The quality of our custom projects is amateurish at best. Decisions made during construction were thoughtless and resulted in expensive "?!" type of issues that we are forever stuck with because the cost to correct them is prohibitive. We would hire several of the subcontractors again; but we would never work again with or recommend Kohlmark. Perhaps if one is spending $1 million + on a house build it warrants their timely and quality work that we've read about elsewhere in their reviews. Unfortunatel, we did not have that experience and have many many photos to prove it. It is disappointing as we selected this group after interviewing several companies -- falsely reassured by the owners' promises. We are not posting the photos here in a climate where reviewers can sued for posting honest reviews. Please message via this post and photos can be shared privately.

They built the house we wanted. We worked with their architects to design a new house that fit our needs and fit with the surroundings. Our general contractor was meticulous throughout. KohlMark isn't going to be the least expensive contractor, but this is our third project with them and we've so far avoided all the horror stories you've heard about with major construction projects.

After researching and interviewing many builders, I settled on Kohlmark to design and build my home. After meeting Mark Kohler and Tom Flach, it quickly became apparent that building high-quality and well-designed homes suited to their client’s needs was their priority. Their subcontractors are all top-notch and their process for building is unique in the industry—they make you a part of the process, seek your input along the way, and have an open-book policy. While their process is great, Kohlmark’s passion for their projects is what really sets them apart. While meeting with inspectors, appraisers, subcontractors, and designers, I repeatedly heard some variation of “Kohlmark is one of about three builders in the area that are worth it,” “your builder is one of the few that actually care,” and “you have one heck of a builder.” After going through the entire design/build process with them, I don’t disagree with any of those comments. The quality of their work and their reputation speak for themselves. There are few builders in the area that operate in such a trustworthy manner and deliver such quality results. Working with Tom, Mark, Wade, Stephen, Linette, and Derek made designing and building a new home a pleasant experience. They always offered up constructive ideas during the process and delivered a beautiful finished product on time.

They performed very well on our 1950's ranch house renovation. Total demo down to the structure and removal of the roof trusses. Some new footprint also added. Total of about 4200 SF. Coordination of systems and utilities in the existing structure was complicated and well done. Matching different floor finishes to be flush across the existing / new areas was done without need of thresholds which made the modern interior design possible. Constructed 1000SF covered Patio with exposed concrete columns and heavy timber roof structure. Constructed 700SF Pool House with heavy timber roof. Excellent job on coordinating installation of 8' x 13' overhead door with 1" insulated glass panels.

I did a first-floor renovation to my house, which included new siding, new roof, stone work for the porch, demolition of an old addition, new addition, kitchen, bathrooms and a beautiful new deck. I was very pleased with how KohlMark managed my expectations and my project, from the initial drawings that turned ideas into plans, to the weekly progress meetings, to the move-back-in date. They truly partnered with me to make my house everything I wanted it to be. I would highly recommend KohlMark to anyone doing a renovation or building a custom home. And we LOVED our project manager! Note that my project started at the beginning of February and proceeded through the pandemic. No one could've predicted what challenge was to come when we started the project. And, how lucky was I that construction was deemed an essential service? There were a few vendor/supply delays, but nothing that was unreasonable or that put the project at risk. In the end, moving back into my "new" house was the perfect pick-me-up for this otherwise crappy year.
