About Us

Since establishing our practice in the Sonoma Valley in 1990, we have designed buildings ranging from residential additions to entire neighborhoods. We value our continuing relationships with clients, contractors and building officials, and appreciate how important these relationships are in achieving successful building projects. Our greatest source of satisfaction is in exceeding our clients expectations. Bill Willers received his Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley in 1984. He has been a licensed architect in California since 1988. Carol Marcus received her Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley in 1979, and Master of Architecture from the University of Oregon in 1983. She has been a licensed architect in California since 1986. We do what we do because we believe that the built environment, be it a neighborhood or a bedroom, can be designed to make a difference in people's lives. We get great satisfaction out of working with our clients to translate their wishes into three dimensions, creating places that capture the qualities of their surroundings, are respectful of the environment, and of our clients' budgets.

Bill and Carol Willers are two of the most professional and personable architects one could ask for. Our team has had them design three new construction luxury homes for us and the workflow has been flawless on all fronts. Their experience in design and what is relevant to today’s market is an invaluable component to any design build team. Their relationships with the local municipalities and knowledge of the incredibly complex permitting landscape is hugely beneficial. I would highly recommend them if you are looking for the best of the best. They really have an eye for what works and can save you money up front with thoughtful design concepts.

After purchasing a 50's ranch house on a 5 acre property, we began working with the husband and wife team Bill Willers and Carol Marcus. Phase 1 involved designing and building a guest house and a pool house in 2014. We found Bill and Carol to be very complimentary in their skills. While they were both good listeners trying to understand how we wanted to use each building, Bill interfaced mostly with us developing the broad concepts and Carol focused on the detailed drawings. He understands construction well and worked effectively with our contractor. He is able to design very attractive yet functional structures incorporating interesting details. We found them responsive and readily available. Bill has an excellent sense of landscaping and was very helpful with the plans to integrate landscape with the design of the structures. After being very pleased with working with Marcus & Willers on phase 1 of our project, we are now in the midst of phase 2 : the major remodeling of the main house. We are very happy with the design and progress of the project. We highly recommend Marcus & Willers Architects

Bill and Carol have a unique and rare combination of skills; they are true design professionals who understand the art behind design, as well as the technical knowledge of construction detailing and materials usage. Beyond this, they are wonderful people to work with and great communicators; upfront and upstanding.

After looking for the "right home" for four plus years we were anxious to move in as quickly as possible. Marcus & Willers got right to work and did a tremendous job of listening to us and intuiting what we really were looking for. We could not be happier with the end result and the process was actually a pleasure. I should also add that they did a first rate job of working/coordinating everyone involved. We were out of the country for an extended period of time during the project and yet they kept us informed which we both appreciated and enjoyed. It is hard for us to imagine that a project could go more smoothly and we are thrilled to wake up every morning in our remodeled home.

Friends and neighbors ask to see our house and say they love, love,love it. Every inch works and blends with simplicity, utility and comfort. It is one of the best examples of a small 'green' house in Sonoma. Even though we are real estate agents felt knowledgeable about housing, many steps of the process of rebuilding our house were a new experience for us. At first we did not understand how much we needed guidance but as the challenges and decisions mounted, we realized that the reason we were confident and thrilled with the perfect result was because we had Marcus and Willers as our architects. They tracked and responded to all our little and big concerns with calm assurance and clear guidance by listening carefully and teaching with ultimate patience. Our house is the jewel we wanted; we call it our Land Yacht....1150sq. ft. of perfection.

Marcus & Willers Architects worked with us to take a cottage built in 1925 and transform it into a lovely home with great "curbside appeal" reminiscent of what was once here but much more liveable! We bought the property realizing the original cottage was cute but probably would need a lot of work. Although we ended up building a totally new home we used much of the footprint and "style" to create a beautiful space. Bill Willers' modernistic touch helped add in creative, delightful features that keep our home interesting and fun (windows high up that frame majestic oaks), big skylights that open up the hall, a living room where you and your friends want to gather, a kitchen that is a pleasure to work in. Lots of light, beautiful detail and great space planning! We love our house - people say that it is not only beautiful to look at but delightful to be in! Thanks to Bill and Carol for being so easy to work with and for helping us create a wonderful place to live!

Carol Marcus and Bill Willers were the architects on our project in 2005-20006 which consisted of developing a property with a barn/garage and a new house. They understood the "inside/outside" concept we wanted to develop with easy access to the outside and the views from our property. We also used them for a remodel of another house that we subsequently sold. The new house is largely "green built" with a solar field on the barn roof, reclaimed metal, and radiant heat. They were easy to work with and able to explain their architectural views of the project so we understood the big picture of the design.

Bill Willers and Carol Marcus (Marcus & Willers) have done two projects for us. The first was a huge renovation of an historic building, and the second was small remodel on a vacation home. They are a pleasure to work with - very professional - very thoughtful - and very responsive. Their personal tastes lean towards the modern, yet they were very willing to work on the renovations and very responsive to our tastes. I plan to work with again on a project this year. Highly recommended.
