Very pleased with the work done by MDD (principally by Javier Medina) on our detached garage/accessory dwelling unit. Their design vision is modern and functional and aligned perfectly with ours. In addition, their flexibility and expertise as we negotiated through constantly changing CA law and local regulation on ADUs, especially second-story ADUs like ours, was tremendously helpful in persuading what was an initially cool reception from planning authorities into an approval with no meaningful design changes.

We hired Mark Davis Design on two occasions over the last seven years. We found Mark to be an exceptional resource for creative and practical solutions. Our first project involved the reconfiguration of three bedrooms, a master bathroom, and guest bath. Mark imagineered a much more efficient use of our existing space to make room for a large walk-in closet and master bathroom. We also installed in-floor heating, which was essential for making room for everything else. We finished the project on-time and within budget and our home works perfectly for us. The second project involved a more ambitious structural challenge. Our living room was under-built (from original construction in the 60's) and was sinking on one end and was hopelessly out of date. In addition to drawing up the plans for a re-mastered and modern living room, Mark was deeply involved in all aspects of the project, which involved digging piers and shoring up the foundation. Today, our home gleams with a fresh interior, beautiful windows and views, and a space that works perfectly for our family. Mark is a great listener, very creative in his approach to solving problems and worked closely with us every step of the way to ensure we stayed true to our vision and the design. We highly recommend Mark Davis Design for any size of project.

Mark and I worked on a whole-house renovation in Sonoma CA. He was especially sensitive to my preferences, willing to explore and experiment, and was personally very adept with computer modeling, which was a terrific help throughout the design process. I would recommend him with enthusiasm to anyone working on an architectural project, whether you need someone to do top-to-bottom design or someone to execute your own ideas.

Mark was instrumental in the design and project management of my Richmond district flat in San Francisco. From his thorough redesign of our kitchen and bathroom, his thoughtful lighting design, his helpful nature in walking me through the process of sourcing materials, to his essential ability to interface with our contractor, his contributions were crucial to our progress and wonderful outcome. I trust his aesthetic sense, his ability to tackle large-scale projects, and I recommend him wholeheartedly.

Mark designed a very high-profile, complicated, 2-story retail project with a rooftop restaurant and did an outstanding job. Mark's us of "BIM" software wherein he has able to model the building as we were designing the project, and we were able to "fly thru" around and through a building model. This was critical in allowing us to see how the building would ultimately look in terms of massing and scale, and this tool was instrumental in helping us create what will undoubtedly be an award-winning design (the building is being completed now). Mark's strengths are his creativeness, responsiveness, and ease to work with. He never had the architect-ego issue that is very common, he would always give his opinion but go with our decisions without a fight (we have had issues in the past with combative situations with architects who push their design agenda, so this was refreshing).

I would highly recommend Mark Davis Design having worked with Mark for over a year on the comprehensive redesign and enlargement of an 1875 house in San Francisco. Architecturally Mark's design was sympathetic to the original historic structure, whilst at the same time being thoroughly modern, rational and considerate of the construction process. Pulling a permit in San Francisco can be a long and frustrating experience, in fact it's probably the most difficult city to deal with in the United States. Thanks to Mark's (and the structural engineer's) efforts we got the project through the labyrinthine process as originally designed and in under a year, which is a great result for a lateral and horizontal addition to a historic structure in SF. Mark was easy to work with at all stages of the process and always produced work and responded to city questions/issues more than promptly. I'd definitely use the firm again.
