Mountain House Plans

I design and plan so your builder can build a better home that fits your needs, your property, and your budget.

Most of my clients want an energy efficient home, but are not sure where to start. Often the first questions is about solar panels. But I tell them that we should put that off for last. Why?
Because there are so many other ways to make a home energy efficient that cost much less, and do much more good. We should start with the best strategies for your home first! Each home is different. That is why I like to get a lot of information about the building site, the wishes and needs of my clients, and of course, the budget.
ENERGY SAVING STRATEGY #1: CONTROLLING THE SUN.
I design the home to absorb more sunshine in the winter, and less in the summer. What a difference this makes! Both in energy efficiency, and making the home more comfortable! All year long! And the best part of this is that it does not raise construction costs. In fact sometimes this step REDUCES costs! That's because while I am designing for the sun, I am also designing to reduce excavation costs.
ENERGY SAVING STRATEGY #2: IMPROVING THE INSULATION.
Not to bore you with all the little details, but most homes have way too many heat leaks. Every one we plug improves the house. These bad leaks can also cause problems with moisture and mold. And how much does this step cost? Usually very little, but up to this point we have cut the heating and cooling so much that you can use a smaller system in your house. And that might save you some money.
ENERGY SAVING STRATEGY #3: REDUCING ENERGY CONSUMPTION.
With most homes the biggest energy consumers are the heating, cooling, water heating, laundering, and cooking. For each of these we can consider which appliances you are comfortable with, and if they will save enough energy to justify the extra cost.
THESE THREE STRATEGIES WORK!
By planning this way from the start, we can make your home much more efficient for about the same cost. Now we can talk about those solar panels. If you were planning to install enough to produce your electricity, you won't need as many. That can save a lot of money.
YES, I LOVE MY WORK.
I can help people be energy efficient while saving them construction costs. And while I'm at it I can help make their home more accessible, reduce maintenance, and plan for their needs.
