We hired North Bay Construction (NBC) for a full condominium remodel that began in November 2023 and was completed in May 2024. Our general contractor was John Fox, whom we were introduced to through our interior designer, Carly Rose of Rose Design. The scope included a complete renovation of two bathrooms and the kitchen, along with additional touch-ups throughout our high-rise condo in San Francisco. Our primary points of contact were John Fox and Judit Sanchez Fernandez. John oversaw the project as the lead contractor, while Judit supported communication and coordination alongside our designer’s project management. We chose NBC because of their transparency and detailed cost breakdowns. That level of clarity was important to us, as both my husband and I value organization and financial visibility. What NBC did particularly well: * They are experienced working in dense urban environments like San Francisco, where logistics—parking, access, and limited workspace—can be challenging, especially in high-rise buildings. * They maintained a high standard of cleanliness throughout the project. This mattered a great deal to us, as our building has very well-kept common areas. Their team kept the worksite inside our unit orderly and handled all material transport with care, without impacting shared spaces. * They have strong relationships with skilled and reliable tradespeople, which was reflected in the quality of the work and coordination across the project. * They stand behind their work. Even after completion, they have remained responsive and helpful whenever we’ve had follow-up questions or smaller home improvement needs. Through them, we’ve also built a network of dependable tradespeople we can continue to rely on. We would confidently recommend NBC to others planning a remodel, particularly in a high-rise or urban setting.

We worked with John in 2016 for a major renovation of our home. We had been working with a designer (unaffiliated with North Bay) who had been overcharging us; we were way over budget and feeling frustrated. John and North Bay Construction saved us. We fired our designer and John helped us bring our project back to a manageable place without compromising the quality and beauty of the renovation. They did an incredible job - the work is excellent, they were on time and on budget. Everyone who came to the house (electrician, plumber, stucco, roofing, heating/cooling, flooring) were amazing to work with. 10 years later, we still go to him for recommendations for regular house maintenance projects. His advice is never wrong. You won't regret working with North Bay Construction.

John and his team did our full house remodel, and we are so glad they were our partners on this project! During the quote process, he brought all of his subs in to prepare the most comprehensive estimate. It gave us the confidence that there wouldn’t be surprises along the way, and our project finished largely on time and on budget at an excellent quality. We lived nearby during construction and checked on the house periodically. The crew was great and the work was neat. On fridays the space was always swept and cleaned up. In contrast to other projects in our neighborhood that seemed to idle for periods of time, things moved forward at all times. If one part was delayed, Judit our wonderful project manager would move another piece up. Obviously with a project this scale there were challenges. Some things needed to be redone, etc. But, John was always such a professional in dealing with each item. We felt like he took accountability and worked with us the find a solution. Lastly, we’ll say that many of his subs have worked with him for years and are true craftsmen. We are thrilled with how the project turned out and would work with John again in a heartbeat.

Working with John and North Bay Construction was amazing! They tackled two bathroom remodels and a large kitchen refresh for us, and the results are beautiful. I was a fairly engaged homeowner on our 1912 Edwardian in Noe Valley that was down to the studs in half the house. John was very flexible with adapting to changes in the plans and was keen to understand our vision for the project. John also employs only the highest quality subcontractors, and we were completely satisfied with all of them. John and his team were a dream to work with! We had a more complex project and they stepped in on relatively short notice to fit us into their schedule. Throughout the project, John was reliable and transparent. If he said he was going to do something (e.g. meet us, schedule the plumber, talk to the city, etc.) it always happened. We had some minor delays (normal for most projects) and John always took accountability for these situations, bringing well-considered solutions and go-forward plans. Like most homeowners, we don’t do major renovations repeatedly in our lives and have heard so many horror stories — being able to work with a team that is professional and trustworthy, with a high bar for quality gave us the peace of mind to know we were in good hands for one of the largest investments we have made in our home.

Several years ago, I needed to renovate my older home after it suffered a fire. I reached out to a few contractors, but North Bay Construction was head and shoulders above the rest. I probably couldn't count the number of contractors we've hired throughout the years. North Bay Construction is without a doubt the best we've ever worked with. John and his crew completed a to-the-studs renovation of our 1906 kitchen in 2023-2024 and knocked it out of the park. Totally blown away. The things I appreciated most about John and his crew: - high-touch, detail-oriented, and communicative - a modern operation, with deep experience executing and detailing all kinds of projects (from historic/traditional to ultra-modern) - a deep bench of dedicated subs and in-house, experienced carpenters. I've never seen tight scheduling like this before, and the work was all immaculate - a collaborative approach. The project was completed on time, exactly to the standard we expected and discussed. We stayed on budget, and the unexpected items that arose during the project were discussed with complete transparency. We highly recommend North Bay Construction. John Fox and his team recently completed a major remodel of our 1937 San Francisco home, including a stairway replacement, seismic reinforcing, new kitchen and bathroom, and replacement of the heating system and many windows. The work took about a year - slightly longer than the initial estimate but understandable given pandemic-related supply chain issues and a few unexpected construction issues. We found it very easy to work with John, office manager Judit, foreman Mateo, and the rest of the North Bay team, and we are extremely happy with the final result. North Bay communications are excellent - starting from the detailed bid submission and discussions and the initial schedule projection and continuing through the actual construction work and inevitable adjustments to the project plans. John provided weekly updates on work completed and next steps. As questions or issues arise, we had the opportunity to first discuss these in person with written follow-up on the path forward. We had about a dozen change orders from the original plan, some due to our own choices and requests and some due to issues discovered during construction; the options and costs for these change orders were always clearly communicated in writing. We were also given updated construction schedules on a regular basis. Most importantly, we are extremely happy with the overall quality of the work and the final results. Minor problems were all resolved quickly; our only significant problem related to a new wood floor, which John addressed by replacing the original subcontractor and covering the additional cost. We were able to interact directly with the sub-contractors as needed, to resolve our specific concerns and to ask questions about maintenance or operational requirements for the new items. John and Judit were also quick to follow up on the handful of minor issues that we discovered after the project was completed.

NBC team (John, Judit, carpenters, etc) are highly professional and high quality general contractors. I would engage with NBC again on all my home projects and look forward to the next one. The entire experience was a pleasure! (1) Scope of job: NBC renovated the entire exterior of my house, including demolition, new windows, carpentry, bolting/bracing, insulation, water-proofing, concrete, stucco, plastering, lighting, paint, roofing, permitting. (2) Timeliness: NBC worked strenuously to ensure the project was completed on time. The entire crew, including sub-contractors, committed to showing up on time or early and completed each division/piece on time. (3) Quality: NBC rigorously vets their sub-contractors. Every sub-contractor has high standards and is passionate about their craft. Every team left the site well-organized and clean. (4) Communication & Organization: NBC is highly experienced, so the coordination with carpenters, sub-contractors, and permitting was seamless. They anticipated my questions and needs and were very responsive to requests and changes. John sent a weekly update on the upcoming week, and checked in regularly during the week.

John was very responsive and detail-oriented! We didn't end-up working with NBC but we've enjoyed the interaction and their attention to detail.

Look no further, NBC is exceptional We found NBC in the fall of 2017 when searching endlessly for general contractors for a full remodel we were doing to our home in San Francisco. Kitchens, baths, plumbing, heating, paint, floors...the works There must be too much business in the city because many of the high end GCs we met with were cocky and noted that they didn't even want to consider a job if it was less than $500k. Unbelievable! Our first meeting with John Fox at NBC was exactly the opposite. John was pleasant, knowledgeable, and seemed genuinely excited to work with us. He took the time to understand our vision, and even suggested designers that we might want to work with for floor plans, kitchen & bath layouts, and cabinetry. Over the coming weeks we met with John and Judit numerous times and agreed on the full scope of work at a reasonable price, and then the NBC team got to work. Everyone knows that a full home remodel comes with its set of challenges. Every home is unique and you never know what you're going to encounter when you open up walls and see what's inside. This is where the NBC team shines. We encountered everything from faulty plumbing, to a worn out furnace, to leaks in our roof and siding...we also decided to change some things along the way, including install some new windows, changing the locations of a few doors, and rewiring the electrical. Alberto, the foreman we had on site throughout the project, was phenomenal in explaining everything that was going on and presenting us with our options. It was clear that he knew what he was doing, and the NBC team took great pride in doing top notch work. John also checked in with us weekly on site to review the progress We only had a couple of issues with subcontractors throughout the process but every time we were frustrated John and the NBC team worked through the issues in a calm and straight forward manner, always leaving us feeling like he had our best interests in mind. John Fox and his miracle team are awesome. We had a 2 bedroom & 1 1/4 San Francisco Flat that John and his team turned into a 3 bedroom & 2 bath (en suite) flat. We had dark paneling throughout, which we loved. We had contractors come in and say that it would be impossible to keep the paneling because it would be impossible to match. With John it never even came up as a challenge. We were so worried our home wouldn't retain the San Francisco feel that we fell in love with. With the addition of the bedroom and the new walls, you can't even tell where the old walls were, it looks perfect. He found a glass specialist who created a piece of art and solved a challenging design issue with the creation of the new room. John's communication skills are top notch and he follows through with what he says he's going to do 100%. Remodeling is stressful on everyone, but with someone like John - kind,honest,competent - in your corner it makes the process doable. We didn't have a designer helping us through the decision making, John was patient and his team helpful, my visions literally came to life. We are so happy with our results, and would use his team again in a heart beat with absolutely no hesitation.

We just finished a four-month remodel project with John and North Bay and had a fantastic experience. John is a busy guy with many teams and ongoing projects, but somehow he always makes you feel like your project is his #1 priority. He is super responsive, attentive to detail, sensitive to your particular needs and timelines, and committed to ensuring you're happy with the final product. He chases down permitting with the City on his own time and dollar, advises you ahead of time and asks you to confirm when things go above budget (whether because you decide to do more/different work or unforeseen issues arise), sends weekly emails recapping what was completed that week and what will be completed in the next two weeks, regularly meets in person to discuss ideas and do walk-throughs, meticulously coordinates all of North Bay's subs, etc. We needed to move in on a particular date and John kept his word, making sure the work was completed on a very tight timeline. There were small touch-ups that needed to be done after we moved in, but John made sure they were done promptly. Mateo, the foreman on our project, was also fantastic. He and all the teams who worked on our house did beautiful work and were very respectful of our time and space. They never grumbled when we were super nit-picky (which was often), and approached everything with a positive attitude. Judit in North Bay's office is also great - - again, very responsive, professional, and thorough. Perhaps most importantly, the work North Bay did on our place is top notch. We feel very fortunate to have worked with them and look forward to future projects.

Amazing job! John, his crew and all the subcontractors absolutely exceeded expectations. We did a bathroom remodel and a serious house facelift (opened walls, refinished floors, new paint, new doors, new windows, updated garage). We knew from the start that John was honest and thorough and the person we wanted to work with just by reading his incredibly thoughtful and detailed bid for our project. We had started the project working with a designer who had no regard for our budget and designed a project that we loved but was way too expensive. About a quarter of the way into the remodel, we fired our designer and depended on John to guide us through the rest of the project. NorthBay Construction exceeded our expectations. 1.) NorthBay Construction was very considerate of our budget and remarkably stayed within our budget-- even given our many changes and upgrades. Charges were transparent and the accounting was very organized. 2) John responded immediately to every question and never acted annoyed about our many changes during the project and my designers perfectionism. He coordinated all subcontractors seamlessly and juggled any unforeseen circumstances with precision and ease. It was like having a friend around who really set the tone for an anxiety-free, well-done project. 3) Most importantly, we now have two beautifully remodeled bathrooms where my family and guests feel like they are indulging in a 5 star experience. Second, they put up with my perfectionistic eye for detail and made the changes without complaint. Third, they provided an update every Sunday or Monday with a list of what they were accomplishing that week and any questions they needed answered from us -- very organized and transparent. And lastly, they provided a fixed bid that they kept to and for any change orders I requested, they meticulously sent through pre-approvals to ensure we were both on the same page regarding costs. I have another basement remodel project I likely will embark on in five years and I would definitely hire them again.

John and is team were outstanding on our home remodel. They renovated our guest bathroom, guest bedroom, media room and built a new staircase . All if it was executed better than how we had imagined it. We couldn't be happier with the results. John and his team of sub contractors were professional through out the entire project. We were so happy with John and his team that we need to use them to renovate our master bathroom - they made the smaller guest bathroom better than the larger master.

We hired John and NorthBay Construction to remodel our house in the Haight and are very pleased with the work. John is honest, hard-working, and easy to communicate with. He has a strong team of subs and called in a few highly skilled craftsmen for some complicated work on our Victorian house. John did a great job staying within the budget, but didn't meet all of our deadlines. That being said, we continue to call John for any construction work we need done and are consistently pleased with his work.

I used John and his company NorthBay Construction for the remodel of my Outer Sunset house. The remodel included extending ground level of the house and building out a master bed, bath and closet. It was a great experience beginning from the quoting process all of the way through completion. NorthBay Construction was the only bidder that brought their subs to the house for a walk thru, which allowed them to provide a very detailed bid. John was great to work with and clearly communicated the progress made, work remaining and any issues that cropped up during the previous day. He was flexible in working with my designer and all of this subs were great to work with as well (and I have used several of them for other smaller jobs since then). We’d love to recommend John Fox & his company, North Bay Construction. We used him for our kitchen & 2 bathroom remodel of our Victorian house in the Mission in 2013. We used him again in 2014/2015 to carve out a section of our garage to make a playroom/guest area and he also re-built two decks as part of a large backyard renovation. John Fox is an excellent communicator; he kept us appraised of progress & next steps at least weekly, if not more. He is quick to respond any time you need him. Fox is also great at explaining everything that needs to be done and gave us a realistic expectation of cost & time involved. He's also great with pulling all necessary permits, letting you know what you can do, how to get around anything you can't, ways to keep costs down, etc. In addition, he worked well with the many different crews that were involved in our project (designer, landscape contractor, subs, etc…). After the job was completed, John checked back in to make sure everything was still OK with the work they completed.

I've just completed a 4 month project with SF North Bay Construction. I could not talk more highly about John and his company and would extremely recommend both without any hesistation. I started working with John several years ago. I am a local interior designer and we met on a project several years ago. He was so easy to work with and did such a good job I have worked with him since then several times. The subs he uses are all great and there is always harmony on the job. Highest marks for the tiling and electrical work and final detailing. Every last minor detail was handled. The project went over by a little in both budget and timing, but John was communicative throughout the process on any cost or timing issues. Very collaborative. Could not be happier with the final results. We get raves on how beautiful the upgrade has been.

John was an excellent contractor, attentive, easy to communicate with and got the job done in a neat and timely fashion. If it wasn't for his painter I would have given him 5 stars. However John took care of the problem after I pointed out what was missed. I have already referred John to my friends.

Had 2 bathrooms gutted and redone. The finished product looks great. John and NB were great communicators, was always available by text. The subs were talented, great plumber and tiler. Took longer, but some of that was me with change orders. Made sure through the entire project we always had in inside toilet. Bid came in at the middle, still not cheap but the end result was worth it.
