Tierney Conner Architecture

While working with Tierney Conner Architecture as an architectural photographer, especially with Anne and Erin, I noted that they possess a clear vision. Their intimate awareness of light, material properties, and strong design imparted a welcoming and soothing aesthetic. I particularly appreciated their integration of indoor and outdoor space. It is a great pleasure working with Tierney Conner Architecture!

We just gutted our second house with Tierney Conner at the helm and again could not be happier with the results. As with our first house, they came up with a floor plan that maximized space and functionality, thinking through every little detail. We're already working with them on our next project for this house, and will eventually have them design the backyard, too. It's so nice to be able to partner with one team for both the indoors and out!

I can honestly say that the very best thing I did in my recent full, to-the-studs, nothing-untouched renovation was hire Tierney Conner. We had a huge project on our hands with a limited budget, and I made the choice at the beginning to invest in an architect rather than rush through the planning and spend on materials at the end. I am so glad that I hired Anne and Erin at the outset—they designed a spacious, light-filled home that feels good to be in. They listened to how my family lives and how we aspire to live, and designed a gorgeous space that works well for us and can continue work as our kids get older and our parents age. In my mind, the money we spent on their plans and guidance will easily pay for itself because the design of the house is timeless and thoughtful. There won't be any need to go in and reconfigure spaces, move doors, or add windows—that was all considered at the outset. I truly could not have gotten through my renovation without Anne. During the permitting and construction processes, she was a stalwart advocate and invaluable resource. My contractor was the absolute worst (my choice, not someone they recommended), and Anne helped us navigate our relationship with him and fix/prevent many of his mistakes. One last thing is that these folks have impeccable taste. Everything they showed me was warm and modern—livable, welcoming, and clean. They helped me achieve a space that people want to come to and stay in. Anne and Erin designed a home for our family that brings people together—where we can gather with our friends and neighbors and family. It's such a gift and I'm really so grateful to them. If you have the chance to work with these marvelous humans, don't pass it up.

We worked with Tierney Conner on our Berkeley full house remodel. This was our first house and remodeling project, but Erin and her team walked us through each stage, from design to finding contractors to finalizing finishes. A few things, especially, stand out about Erin and the Tierney Conner team. 1) They are brilliant! I would wrestle with design challenges (room layout/flow, color selection, transitions, etc.), and Erin would solve every problem in about a minute or two. Her layout suggestions for our kitchen, our living room, made a huge difference in how we use our home. 2) In spite of their small size, the breadth of their expertise is incredible. If you want to trust a single firm to do everything from drawing up plans and navigating the permit process, to selecting finishes and furniture to designing your landscaping, TC is the one. 3) They're fast, flexible and practical. Not only did Erin and team pull our plans and design together in record time, they split up our permits to enable work to begin on the larger renovation while we waited for the longer permit. This allowed us to finished a full house renovation in record time. No other design firm I spoke to worked as quickly as they did. Also, I was very hands on for this renovation, and wanted to do a lot of my own research - they were flexible with my approach, pointing me in the right direction when needed or jumping in when there was something I didn't want to do. They also introduced us to General Contractors, one of which we hired. 4) Their taste is impeccable. They are amazing with colors, finishes, style, etc. I spent a lot of time researching spaces, products, but could only get about 80% of the design to work - Erin could find whatever wasn't working in my scheme and correct it immediately. Also, there aren't many designers who can design homes that are both modern and warm in the East Bay - most are either too clinical or transitional/traditional. Although I did a lot of my own research, it wouldn't have come together as nicely without Erin's guidance. 5) Most teams are easy when things are going well, but how people handle conflicts or challenges tells me whether I will recommend them in the future. We had one or two incidents with our process that came up, and Erin addressed them immediately and professionally. We love our home and highly recommend Tierney Conner.

Working with Anne, Erin, and J. has been a wonderful experience. We first worked with them when they designed our kitchen about 7 years ago, and we are now in the midst of renovating bathrooms and other areas of our 100 year old craftsman home to make it more functional for our growing family. They are easy to work with, have a very collaborative process, and have a great eye for detail and space. I think our house will be beautiful. We absolutely loved working with Anne, Erin and J. from Tierney Conner Architecture! They designed a beautiful ~800 square foot addition including living space, bedroom, and bathroom. They additionally redesigned our kitchen to transition from a 1920's bungalow-style home into the very modern, light-filled addition. We felt it was a huge benefit to have the input from three different designers weighing in on every design decision. We trusted them completely. They were very conscious of our budget and created a beautiful space that looks much more magazine-worthy than we anticipated. They know their materials and were able to assist us in choosing finishes that were low in cost, but appear high end. They were incredibly responsive throughout all phases of the project, whether it be via email, phone calls, or occasional texts. We would recommend them to anyone who will listen!

We engaged and have now completed three projects with Tierney Conner Architecture. The projects included two new decks (one a complete remodel), and one major kitchen remodel in a 100-year old home. From the onset, working with Ann and Erin was a collaborative process. They understood the look, feel and flow we were trying to achieve, and strategically offered the input and design advice that helped to achieve the look we ultimately loved. From schematic concepts, to design development, to working drawings Ann and Erin fostered great communication and kept the timeline moving forward, not easy on any major remodel. Most remodels are challenging at best, but the flow was very collaborative and the interaction with both contractors was strong and positive, and not advesarial. Ann and Erin used their design expertise to help us pick out colors and finishes, which gave us the confidence that we would be left with a finished product that we would truly enjoy. We were extremely pleased with both decks, and the kitchen. As we wanted a contemporary look, Ann and Erin did an excellent job blending the more traditional features of a 100+ plus year-old house with a more contemporary, streamlined open kitchen with clean finishes. Beginning with a very chopped up 100-year old house, the final product resulted in a much more open floor plan that everyone in our family is extremely pleased with, and is conducive to wonderful family gatherings. I would highly recommend Tierney Conner for their professionalism, timeliness and focus on top notch design, yet remaining cognizant and sensitive to cost.

As we contemplated transforming our historic 105-year-old home in Rockridge into a modern oasis of light, we interviewed many architects and talked with numerous builders. From the moment Tierney Conner Architecture stepped inside our home, we felt an instant kinship with their aesthetic and perspective. They have a well-informed point of view on proportion, on how the human form works in spaces, on indoor/outdoor living, and they took our initial vision beyond our own mental limitations. TC did a phenomenal job of taking the time (and much patience!) to understand our needs. They were extremely creative and offered multiple design options while keeping our budget in mind, and paid great attention to the details that were most important to us. TC was innovative in all of their selections and were exceptional consultants along the way for the dozens of major and minor choices we needed to make! Their client service was incredibly responsive and proactive - we truly felt that they had our best interests at heart in delivering a superior quality and beautiful looking home for our family. TC was above all meticulous and in constant contact with us and our builder. They kept us informed on specifics throughout construction and kept a close eye on our project timeline. Anne, Erin, and J. are amazingly talented and also patient, creative, and skilled at navigating challenges along the way. When things got stressful (as they do!), they showed up with grace and professionalism. The team at TC are not only brilliant architects and designers- they are all around nice people. They are the kind of people you want at your house warming party... which is why we invited them! We recommend them highly.

I've had the absolute pleasure of working with Anne and Erin on two separate occasions to design our Bar Method studios in San Ramon and Oakland. They are fantastic at what they do and even more fantastic to work with. I now consider them both friends through our time on these projects. I look forward to the day I can work with them again!!!

Anne and the team at Tierney Conner have been amazing to work with from start to finish. We used Tierney Conner for the design and plans for a 650 square foot in-law unit for my wife's parents to live. The whole process from start to finish was seamless. The team communicates well, keeps you up-to-date on where you are in the process, helps you understand what to expect, etc. From a design perspective, we worked mainly with Anne who really listened to what we were looking for as far as look and feel, and the needs our parents would have for the space. She took all of our input and came back with great suggestions on how to maximize a very small space while making it feel open, airy and modern. We were super happy with Tierney Conner and would definitely use them for future projects!

Tierney Conner is so amazing I wish I could give them 10 stars instead of 5. They strategically designed our 5 bedroom 6 bath home in Maine with precision, vision, creativity & an uncanny understanding of our family vibe. The most amazing part is that the house was in Maine, we live in Georgia and Tierney Conner was in California during the process. Remarkably, it worked perfectly - they were amazingly responsive, professional, timely. The house is the house of our dreams and I truly do not believe any other architect could have created & constructed something so special. I highly recommend Erin, Ann & this firm!
