I am so happy we hired NC Builders to renovate our 1890s Queen Anne house in Downtown Nevada City. What an amazing experience. Derek and his team, plus all the sub contractors he works with, are complete professionals - not just in their specialist trades - but in their incredible attention to detail and work ethic. Despite this being a back-to-the-studs renovation, the job site was always left neat and tidy at the end of the work day. The team was courteous, friendly, and totally reliable - there was never a day when someone who should have been here didn’t show. They didn’t push us into products or finishes that we hadn’t budgeted for but, at the same time, were happy to offer advice and options when decision fatigue hit. Derek found ways to get us what we wanted (including lifting a full slab of quartz up and over a second floor balcony), and worked so hard in the background sourcing materials and dj ding solutions to problems that inevitably show up in a house of this age. It seemed nothing was too much trouble, no question too silly, no request too annoying. I changed my mind a LOT and even though we all joked about it, I never once felt I was being a nuisance (I absolutely was). This level of expertise and professionalism is not the cheapest, but to us, Derek and his team are worth every penny. The work they did is just perfect. There is not a single thing I look at and wish it had been a little better or neater or straighter. Billing is totally transparent, too, with photocopies of every receipt, and every hour of work accounted for. Such peace of mind. We would work with Derek again in a heartbeat and, knowing this old house, we probably will.

Last autumn I bought an older house in Nevada City that needed all kinds of small jobs completing, including a completely gutted bathroom that the previous owner had been unable to finish prior to the sale. Being new to the area and only being here part-time made finding a general contractor doubly difficult. Derek Dykstra and his crew were recommended to me by the electrician whom I had called on for some emergency electrical work in the old 1890's house. I'm so glad I found Derek. He responded to my initial request very promptly and listened carefully to the details of what needed to be done. I felt confident to leave him to do the work in my absence and the end result was superb. Lots of attention to detail and quality workmanship. He communicated with me at every turn and kept me updated with photos. And there were lots of unexpected discoveries along the way as one might expect with an older property. He worked the smaller jobs into his busy schedule and got everything completed in the timeline we had agreed upon. His billing was detailed and honest. My tenant reported the crew were hardworking, friendly and very thoughtful and communicative. I am no stranger to hiring contractors and have been involved in some extensive building projects in the past. It's not easy to find someone with great integrity that also produces quality results but Derek and his crew do exactly that. I have no hesitation in recommending Derek as a first class contractor. As an architect I have worked with Derek for the past 8 years personally and professionally. I first chose to work with Derek when I saw the finished product of one of his projects. His workmanship is at level of perfection that I truly admire. I have not only worked with and recommended Derek professionally, but trusted him to complete projects on my own home. Derek is professional, reliable and dependable.

This firm did a superb job. The scope of work was to re-frame and "true-up" a 15 foot tall fireplace structure in preparation for the installation of a marble facade. Each framing member had to be removed and either modified or replaced while maintaining support to adjacent walls and the roof. Additional framing was added to support the significant weight of the marble slabs. Upon completion of the framing, the entire structure was encapsulated with cement board, and the support for a mantel added. Related work including the finishing of walls in adjacent areas and the addition of accent lighting was completed. Important to note, errors were made by a separate vendor while installing their equipment. A Place to Hang Your Hat, Inc. was both patient and accommodating while working with this vendor to resolve their problems and keep the project on schedule. We are appreciative for the work which was completed, and would highly recommend this firm for your project.

Well beside the fact that these are the best looking group of contractors you will ever hire and that their work is excellent. I have to say that their best quality is their honesty. They are all honest people who work with A Place To Hang Your Hat. They are concerned with your home and your needs. They are kind and courteous. Qualities that you do not see that often in people, let alone a whole company. I could not recommend them enough. They were also willing to work with my schedule.
