A wallpaper that looks beautiful in the shop is overwhelming once it is hung — and by then you have paid for the rolls and the hanging. Most people either freeze for a year, or commit and find out. Grayson Alchemy designs one room at a time, and shows you the finished room before you buy anything. A commission begins with a conversation about the room, the house it belongs to, and how you actually live in it. What comes back is your room drawn as a finished interior — every paint color, wallpaper, fabric, tile, light and piece of furniture chosen — together with a complete shopping list naming where each piece comes from. Antique, vintage and new. It is not a mood board and it is not a page of suggestions to go and figure out. You are not paired with a random designer and left waiting between rounds. Every decision is made, and nothing is left for you to resolve on your own. The specialty is heritage interiors: hand-painted wallpaper and chinoiserie, saturated paint in the right sheen, lacquered ceilings, velvet with contrast trim, unlacquered brass, and antiques sourced alongside new pieces. English country, Mediterranean revival, Spanish Colonial. Small rooms in particular — powder rooms, butler's pantries and kitchen pantries. They are the rooms most designers treat as an afterthought, and the ones where a wallpaper you love is worth the risk, because there are only four small walls to cover.
