I found Groff Landscape Design on Houzz 11 years ago and after interviewing 4 companies, Groff was the only choice. Robert & his team are so creative, understand drainage issues, work with defined spaces & create lasting & beautiful areas. They even added 2 defined parking spaces behind the house and in Old Town, that is gold. Hired Groff again 2 months ago for a patio project and am just thrilled. Their communication and expertise is the best.

The team did a complete re-do of our yard, from foundational plantings, to walkways and a new driveway, to backyard patios, to additional plantings along the side and back of a yard. The end result was beautiful! I enjoyed working with the design and construction teams and relying on Quinn's encyclopedic knowledge about everything plant-related!

The Groff team is incredible. They did a new stone patio, backyard drainage, sod installation, and new flower bed plantings for us. The team was responsive, exactly on schedule, meticulous in their work, and very easy to work with. The results are beautiful and we get tons of compliments. They are definitely my first choice for any future landscaping projects!

I think it's safe to say I was completely impressed by Groff every step of the way. The designer I worked with was kind and took my notes and needs into account, their horticulturist, Quinn, was so delightfully excited about my plants and put up with my thousand questions during our walk through, and finally the installation team was AMAZING. Josh and his team were punctual, kind, and really there for the project every step of the way. At one point, the company delivering the grill had left it in front of my garage, trapping my car in on a Friday afternoon (I certainly couldn't lift it myself); I called Josh and someone was there to move it within an hour. There were some delays due to deliveries (Covid & supply lines & whatnot), but they were all communicated and when supplies did come it, the team made it clear finishing my project was a top priority. What really blew me away though (and continues to impress) was Groff's care for my project AFTER it was finished (and the last check had cleared). Josh came by to install a new fire pit igniter after the first one didn't work. While there, he noticed they hadn't filled a raised garden bed and came back to do that a few days later (I hadn't even noticed it tbh!). Robert Groff himself called after the project was over to make sure I was satisfied and I mentioned being annoyed at the automatic light schedule and not knowing how to program it differently. He said he would look into it and within an hour had identified the problem and screen shooted images of how to fix it. THEN, just today, a full 8 months after the project is complete, I received an email from their horticulturist, Quinn, asking if all the plants were still doing well and if I wanted to do a walk through with him just to be sure. Look, they were certainly not the cheapest option, but from my standpoint (a single woman, living alone, who really needed someone to be there for her and manage this), they are well worth it. A FULL 5 stars.

We recently used Groff Landscape Design for a major landscaping project at our home. We were extremely impressed with their work from start to finish. The designers were incredibly professional and listened carefully to our vision for the space. They worked with us to create a beautiful and functional design that exceeded our expectations. Once the design was complete, the construction team was equally impressive. They were efficient and skilled, and they paid careful attention to every detail. The end result was a stunning outdoor space that included a patio, pool, and beautiful landscaping. Groff did a masterful job with our project, from the concept phase through to the delivery. They came with great ideas, partnered flexibly with us as the project evolved, and delivered a fantastic product. In addition to the plants/sod and the rest of the softscaping, the project involved full hardscaping, including an outdoor kitchen, driveway, retaining walls, multiple stairs and a firepit. It was executed fantastically well, and when any hiccups occurred, Groff handled things exactly as you'd hope a partner would. Their sign says: "The yard you want. The experience you deserve". Groff truly delivers on this promise. After a 3+ year project to build our new home, we are exceedingly vendor-wary. Nonetheless, we've had a fantastic experience working together with Groff. Highly recommend!

The Groff team was great to work with from start to finish. They listened to what we wanted and gave suggestions based on their experience without pushing for more than what we were looking for. They were receptive to questions and concerns throughout the process and worked with us to make any necessary adjustments. Their crew did great work, getting the job completed on schedule and on budget. They truly take a “customer first” approach. We will definitely be working with them again!

We engaged with Groff for our large backyard hardscape, small pool and landscaping project in 2021-2022. The process from start to finish was simply the best contractor experience we have had. Design: Sean with the design team was incredibly skilled, detail-oriented and accommodating. Easily worked with us down to minute details, and offered great advice. Quinn with landscape design, similar, he met with us in the early stages and reviewed everything from botany, drainage, and meeting our unique needs. The estimating and contract were clear, accurate, and constantly up to date. Once handed to Josh and the actual build crew, the expertise continued. The crew was polite, hard-working, clean, and friendly. Clearly detailed oriented. We knew almost every day what the plan was and what was needed from us. As our project was mostly during the winter months, and while there were delays due to weather, these were expected and communicated extensively. The end product exceeded our expectations. There were no 'hidden' costs, as we thoroughly discussed and understood change orders as we went along. The personal attention from Jose, Josh, and Rob Groff was exemplary. Seriously cannot recommend Groff strongly enough. You will pay a premium for this level of work, it is a value in every imaginable way.

From start to finish, working with Groff Landscape Design was an absolute dream! They responded promptly to our initial request for an estimate and provided that estimate quickly - with the estimated (and final) cost comparable to other companies/quotes we got. Once we started working on the design, again, responses to my questions were answered quickly and professionally. When it came time for installation, the workers showed up every day on time as promised and worked quickly to finish the job. The workers were so prompt that a few of our neighbors even commented that they had never seen such prompt and consistent contractors! The final product is exactly as expected and more! We truly love our new outdoor space and we couldn't be happier. Groff is truly a top notch company to work with!

Fantastic outcome, process and experience. Will definitely rehire Groff Landscape Design for my next outdoor space project. The Groff project scope included design and build for my side yards and back yard, solving a complex drainage challenge on all three areas, deck, patio, walkway, rain garden, plantings. They integrated the new outdoor living space and reshaped yard into my home - an older house with a recent addition - as if It had all been designed as one. Highly professional, honest, proactive, reliable, responsive, knowledgeable and creative. Excellent communications, project management, problem solving, supplier relationships, and teamwork. Outstanding personnel; each one went above and beyond in some way during the project, and in responding to questions I had afterwards.. Their design was innovative, stylish, and cost effective while incorporating high quality materials. The multi layer plan documents coupled with the 3D renderings and detailed proposal / contract documents were extremely effective and I continue to refer to them along with their support materials. Since this all happened ‘during COVID’ there were added challenges including material supply and high business volume. (Oh, and I may have changed my mind a few times.) They adapted to these challenges, were extremely fair and flexible on change orders, and finished the project on time and on budget. I look forward to working with the Groff team again!

Our permeable driveway installed 6+ years ago had several pavers that were no longer level (I didn't even notice it, but my wife did and lobbied for it to be perfectly level again). Rob Groff and his team provided a prompt estimate and, because it was a small job by comparison to their other projects, worked us in within a matter of days. The result is having a new driveway again. Groff Landscaping is the most professional and collegial firm we have had the pleasure to work with. I will use their services for any future projects and recommend them to all who are looking for innovative landscaping and other outdoor needs that are installed and maintained with the highest quality.

Our project was a dry river rock bed to help with drainage. It was phase 1 of our overall outdoor landscape design with Groff. While the smallest phase, Groff provided outstanding customer service and treated it like it was the most important and largest job for the day. We love the outcome and it has really helped our drainage. We can't wait to start our next phase with Groff.

Groff did an amazing job transforming the entire outdoor space at our first Arlington home--everything from replacing our crumbling brick retaining wall with a stone one to installing low-voltage lighting and irrigation, and incorporating beautiful plantings with seasonal interest all around the yard. Thoughout the process, Rob and his team were extremely responsive and committed to high quality workmanship that met our needs and vision. I hired Groff Landscape Design to design and install a landscape plan for the entire front and back yard. Robert and Sean were amazing to work with. They were able to design and execute the project in two phases to keep it both as cost effective and aesthetically pleasing as possible. We started with phase one - which included a large deck and shade structure, extensive trees/plantings, lighting, irrigation, drainage, and a vegetable garden. From start to finish, it was a wonderful experience. During the installation I was always made aware of the schedule and the work to be completed. The installation crew was incredibly professional and experienced, and did an excellent job keeping the job site clean each and every day. Overall Robert Groff and his entire team take tremendous pride in their work and their customer service, and really go above and beyond. I am so thrilled with how phase one turned out. I can't wait to work on phase two of the project!

We started working with Rob and his team several months before our project actually commenced as we had a vision of what we wanted but weren't sure how to make it happen. Groff's design team was great with several design reiterations until we had what we wanted. We re-engineered our entire backyard with a new deck off the main level and full hardscape lower level backyard with landscape areas. We ended with a 2 tier patio approach, all hardscaped with a seating wall and steps separating the upper/lower. We had no idea the amount of work that goes into proper drainage, tiering appropriately and the sheer amount of materials that go into this type of project. Groff's communication throughout the process was excellent. Groff's attention to detail and their follow up on last minute details was over and above. I highly recommend Groff for any needs.

I originally had found Groff Landscape Design LLC on Houzz and I am sooo glad I did because Robert Groff and his team are extremely talented, creative, fair and professional. They took a horrible lopsided backyard space in Old Town and created an oasis and two reserved parking places. They just came back two weeks ago to add some more plants (that I killed of course) and refresh my patio. I am beyond ecstatic with their work. Originally I had received four bids and design ideas from other companies. There was never a doubt who I would choose. Groff Landscape Design is incredible.

Fantastic experience with Groff Landscape Design for new landscaping and drainage work. They took a project that had been overwhelming us (and that we'd thus been putting off) for years and made it a smooth and easy process, and we highly recommend them. The design process was very smooth, it was clear they'd really listened to our wishes and preferences during the initial site tour, the ideas they came back with were fantastic, and they were very responsive to questions and feedback. They worked within our budget and we never felt pressured to go bigger. Installation also went very well, the crew was diligent, efficient and easy to work with. Our neighbor, a master gardener, came over after the project was complete not only to praise the final result, but also to tell us that she'd observed them putting in some of the plantings and they clearly knew what they were doing with plants more than other crews she'd observed over the years. Everyone was again very responsive to questions/feedback, and there was lots of follow-up on our drainage solutions when we had a series of heavy rains in the months immediately after the project was complete to make sure everything was working well and make adjustments where necessary. The final result was beautiful landscaping and a yard that sends water where it needs to go rather than washing out in every storm and flooding our downhill neighbor's yard. We're thrilled!

We approached Groff Design based on their past projects & reviews on Houzz late last fall to design a landscape plan for our entire yard, including replacing the front stoop and sidewalk, replacing a builder's slab with a pacer patio, and adding a deck. Sean Ryan did the design and was patient with us through the design process. We were really impressed with his design and appreciate all the time he put in. He really listened to our needs and wants, and came up with a plan that is far better than what we would have imagined. We decided to add 3D modeling of the finished plans, which really helped my family visualize the completed project. We decided to do about 3/4 of the plan this year: replacing front stoop and walkway and landscaping the front yard; removing rotting landscape timbers on a side yard and replacing with terraced paver beds; removing a concrete slab patio and replacing with a larger pacer patio including seat wall; removing four trees two of which were 80'+ tall oaks; landscaping around the patio and new grass area; resodding the yard and extending the sod area; adding an irrigation system and lighting in both front and back. Robert Groff handled the installation and stopped by the site every morning. Everyone has been very responsive as well as flexible during install and we've been really pleased with both the process and the final product. We can't be more thrilled with everything -- especially the new hardscaping -- and it's a joy to walk up to the front door now or spend time in the backyard. We plan to have Groff Design back to complete the remainder of the plan, which includes a deck, adding exterior doors and a paver sidewalk in the back yard.

After interviewing 5 different landscaping companies in Spring 2015 to do some fairly significant landscaping on the back yard of our new home in Vienna, we decided to work with Groff Landscaping. After a great experience with the back yard, we engaged them again to do the front yard in the fall. We are very pleased with the results of both projects, and give Groff the highest possible review rating: they provided us great design ideas, had a good selection of materials, made smart recommendations, and demonstrated outstanding project management in their implementation. Perhaps most importantly, Groff’s communications with clients are clear, honest, and dependable. They do what they say they will do when they say they will do it, take responsibility to course correct if necessary, and follow-up until everything is done right. When working with them, you get the clear sense that they actually care about their clients, which is pretty rare these days – Groff and his team are good people.

My wife and I bought a new home that had a backyard grading problem that flowed water towards and around our house. From the design phase, through maintenance phases Robert and Team, including Sean and Jaime were wonderful to work with. We acquired the usual three bids, all of which were within ten percent of one another – but only one contractor took the time to explain the features of what he was planning to install and only one contractor really designed the driveway as an engineer rather than a driveway paver: Groff Landscape Design. Perhaps most importantly, Rob Groff, the President of the firm, is absolutely the greatest person to work with. I’ve worked with contractors of every variety for the past 40 years – and Rob stands head and shoulders above them all. He personally visited the site each day – sometimes twice each day – and adjusted to our changing ideas on its specifications (i.e., less wide than we had originally planned; change of color and size of the rock between the pavers). While on site, Groff Landscape Design even raised some pavers on a patio in the rear of the house for the cost of an hour’s labor. The final product is simply amazing. We could not be more pleased and it has added remarkably to the “curb appeal” of the home, should we ever elect to move. We hired Groff to design and build a new front entrance area, this included multiple retaining walls, custom concrete band walkway, stacked stone facade on the house exterior and a pillar, plantings, boulders, edging and lighting. From amazing 3D design and detailed itemized estimates through to the completed project, I was 100% happy with the quality of work, attention to detail and responsiveness of the entire Groff team. I couldn't be more pleased with GLD and look forward to using them on our next landscaping project!

From our very first meeting with Rob Groff, we were impressed with his courtesy, professionalism and ideas. Our project was to update our landscaping, both at the front and the back. Our small backyard is melds into wooded parkland and over the years the grass has become sparse. A natural stone path was installed connecting our deck and garden pool with a patio at the other end of the yard. The curving path is now surrounded by easily maintained shade-loving plants. From any angle it is a pleasure to behold. Rob also came up with ideas to resolve some major drainage issues. The crew was outstanding, which even drew the attention and comments of neighbors. We are very pleased with the results and would most definitely work with the company on a future project.

Groff Landscape Design completed a renovation of our entire property in Spring of 2013, taking the standard builder grade landscape choices that came with our home and creating a beautiful landscape that we enjoy on a daily basis and will for years to come. From day one to present, Rob continues to excel at customer service, paying close attention to our needs to ensure we are getting exactly what we want, all the while, using his expertise to create beautiful landscape solutions. He communicated clearly the schedule, cost, and worked well with others involved in the project including the city and our neighbors. Rob's recommendations for our back yard patio were key as we did not have a clear idea of what we wanted -- in the end, this is one of our favorite parts of the project. Groff replaced a small concrete patio and grassy area at the rear of my town home with a Pennsylvania blue stone patio. The project included the installation of plant beds on the perimeter of the space, feature lighting, and an expanded landing that created a two-level patio, From the design to the finished project, the work was absolutely first class. The initial design specs sold me on the project because they were more interesting than designs proposed by other companies. The budget for the project was very reasonable. The installation was letter perfect. The crew was highly experienced, highly detail oriented, and fastidious in the daily clean-up process. The crew arrived punctually as scheduled and worked diligently each day during the five day initial installation. Robert Groff, the company VP, addressed each concern, particularly those about plants, promptly and completely. After completion of the initial phase of the project, I asked for some modifications. These were completed at a reasonable cost and with great patience. I could not recommend this company more highly.

I started off not having any idea what I wanted but I wanted some nice hardscape done to a portion of my backyard and my front yard. Groff Landscape came up with some designs, we made a few changes and then they came out made it all happen. He provides you with a beautiful plan and discusses the pros and cons of certain plantings in respect to your location and the natural environment. This is where his knowledge in horticulture and landscape design become so evident. He includes you in the process and is always so polite and respectful. He gives you a date and adheres to it and his workers arrive punctually, work non stop, clean thoroughly and leave you a breath taking design. Every job is important - whether it be small or large and his fees are reasonable and competitive. Based on a good referral from a neighbor, we requested a proposal from Groff landscaping to repair brickwork in our courtyard that was sinking. We also requested a resolution to a leaky water feature and re-mortar of our slate patio. Robert, the owner of the company, responded quickly and met with us the next day. He reviewed the work that needed repair and after evaluating solutions to our water feature, submitted his proposal in just a few days. We had received proposals from two other landscaping companies and Robert's proposed cost was lower. Based on our neighbors recommendation, we decided to give the work to Roberts company. We were very pleased we did. The work was finished in just a few days and looks fantastic! His staff were very professional and cleaned up the work area each day. Robert also,stopped by a couple times to ensure we were happy or had questions. The completed project looks great and we would definitely contact Groff Landscaping Design again for further projects!

Groff design stands out from the rest with its excellent customer service and quality of work. We interviewed eight companies and compared quotes from 4 vendors for our backyard landscaping needs. We selected Groff for the most detailed proposal and design presented to us and excellent attention to our needs and budget. During the course of the work they kept us informed of their progress throughout the day, and finished earlier than we had thought. The end result was exactly as proposed. Groff Landscape Design installed a new front walkway, pillars, seating wall and new porch all in TechoBloc manufactured stone and redid the entire front landscaping including landscape lighting. The work was done to a high level of professionalism. Communication from the company to us was excellent and the work was completed in a timely manner. We would recommend Groff highly to anyone and have already done so to a couple of our neighbors.

Work: Groff did both the design and build work for the following: total backyard landscape plan including multiple 3D renderings, ~450 sq ft hardscape / paver patio (Techobloc Blu style), ~36 linear ft (@ 2 ft high) paver seat wall, drainage system, lighting, pea gravel installation under deck, complete lawn/landscape "makeover" including hauling away all the old brush, roots, piles of logs, etc., leveling/grading the yard, installing 21 new trees and numerous other boxwoods and shrubs/plants, and seeding the lawn. Total job = ~$30K. Experience: Outstanding. We were extremely pleased with the work of Groff throughout the duration of the project- this is the first big ticket home improvement project we've undertaken with a contractor and we're so glad it was with Groff. I suspect there may have been cheaper ways to get this project done, but any premium we paid was worth it for knowing that we were working with pro's who will stand by their work. We had our first meeting with the Groff team (designer Sean Ryan) in late summer 2012- we walked around the backyard, talked about what we disliked about the existing backyard and thought we might want and potential options. At that point, we did not have a strong vision and were really looking for some vision and ideas from them. Sean did some measurements either on that visit or a follow-up, then pretty quickly delivered the first design along with 3D pictures from different views of what it would look like, including a video that sort of clipped together the different views. The 3D drawings were amazing- really the only way we could have grasped what the plan would really look like. The vision was fantastic, very close to what we wanted, but well outside what we wanted to spend. From there, we spent a number of months and ~5-6 iterations on the design and proposal (with no additional cost) to eventually arrive at what we would do. We pulled out a couple pieces of the proposal and contracted them out separately- the tree removal work and deck- which saved a lot of money, and Groff was very accommodating with that. By the time we finally committed to the job, they were booked for about a month, but we got the work scheduled for May. We met with owner Rob Groff, and knew right off that he was on top of things. He kept us updated on weather related schedule shifts, but work started right around our original scheduled date, maybe a little sooner. All of the work was/is top quality and looks magnificent! They had a team of 2-3 guys working for about 2 weeks (Groff employees, not subs) and they did great. At one point, Rob didn't like the amount of space between the seat wall and edge of patio, and he had the team spend about a day re-working that section. We were in regular contact with Rob about any questions or issues via email and/or his near-daily site visits, and he was always responsive. Even after the work was completed, we have exchanged numerous emails about questions we've had, he's come back to inspect how the trees and plants were doing, and it's clear that he wants to be sure that we love our new space- and we do! Would recommend to anyone without hesitation!!!

We hired Groff Landscape for the design and installation of a patio and plant material at the side yard of our end unit townhome. This was the second phase of our patio installation as Groff had designed and installed the stone patio, perimeter fencing and circular stair at the rear of our home last fall. Sean Ryan provided two design concepts for the side yard which included a walkway from the front of the house to an archway that leads to the back patio area. We wanted to retain an option to install a stndby generator, and the designs offered excellent screening for the sitting area from the future generator location. The installation was flawless. Due to some imperfections at the side yard, we had to make some field changes to the patio design to accommodate some slope issues. Robert and Luis offered suggestions that maintained positive slope from the house to the property line without any additional costs to the project and without adversing affecting the "look". Luis, Jaime and Jose delivered the highest quality; they were prompt, courteous, and very professional. Robert was always a phone call away and offered advice throughout the execution process. They worked during some of the most difficult cold and snow conditions to complete the project on time---and with no additional charges. My neighbors are once again impressed with the results of the project. Without a doubt, the value of my home has increased a great deal as a result of the two projects completed by Groff. The end result is warm and inviting to all who visit our home.

He was also flexible with our schedule. His team arrived on time everyday and Rob also checked on the status by visiting our house 1 to 2 times per day.
