I can give you approximate dimensions. I finished this kitchen about 6 years ago and I don't have blueprints in my office any longer. The kitchen was about 18' x 15'. The island was 48"x 60". The distance between counter and island was about 42". Hope that helps. Charmean Neithart

Manny times in condos or apartments the microwave can be placed right over the range. At your appliance store ask for a microwave with a charcoal filter built in underneath. This is one way to bypass a roughed in venting system. Here is this configuration...

If it is possible to vent, it's always best. In some buildings you do not have an option. you have to use a recirculating hood or a micro vent as mentioned before to recirculate the air. it is better than nothing but not much. usually buildings have some form of a vent pipe in the kitchen ceiling but that is also not great. if you can vent, do it. it will save your cabinets and take away the humidity and smell.
it is important to discuss the CFM of the hood with your appliance guy. depending on your cooktop and amount of use, it varies between 600-1500 CFM.

Hi Charmean, I am in trouble! I can't fine THE color for our whole house. I tried BM Philadelphia Cream but the mix was off and it turned out super yellow. Paint store replaced it, and I picked BM Windham Cream, thinking it was a soft light beige and now all I see is yellow that changes from wall to wall (you can see this in the pictures), often to a weird green. I just want something neutral that will add warmth, be a great backdrop for a lot of colorful artwork, go with Gunpowder stained floors, and dark cabinets and very tall ceilings. Also, I would like a paint that doesn't get too dark at night. Any thoughts would be enormously appreciated!! Thank you for this post. I wish I had found it a couple of weeks ago.

Hi ktsview, could you not try to negotiate with them for a lesser fee? Sometimes stores have to cover the costs of manufacture to shipping to their store... maybe you could negotiate and ask them to deliver to the home for free or find a way to reduce the fee.
If you really want that couch, it will always bother you... unless you are prepared to invest more time and energy into finding a substitute good enough. PLUS you have already spent good money with them...

BLee, that would have been me in the house before this one: seemingly a good-sized kitchen, but a surprising lack of countertop! The kitchen we installed in the 1982 rancher we bought in 2012 has lots of counter space, and I let my love of canisters take me where it would, lol.

I think the walls should go more neutral as well. I'm not a big fan of yellow and gold tones with oak. The neutral walls will update the whole space. De-clutter and add some soft blue or green.

@groveraxle- that was the plan to start - use the burlap at that height until the right ones came along......and hope it wasn't years!

I could also do a 16inch or 24inch block at the top of the burlap with the busier fabric giving it some distance from the chair and other things and add the height. Still an inexpensive fill in until the right thing comes along....

I agree. I think a rug in such a small space would overpower the room, especially since there's really no need for it as the room is already carpeted. To ground the room and add a punch of color, I would get rid of most of the pillows, center the bed on the wall and bring more color in through vibrant pillow covers or art.

This is a great question. I recommend time and again a shaker style door detail for cabinets. This door detail never ages in my opinion and always looks classic. It also looks good in a white kitchen, stain grade, or any painted color.

I am one of those people who is massively sick of granite!!! One of the problems is that it only comes in so many colors, so you see the same thing again and again. I loved baltic brown 10 years ago, but after living with it 10 years and since seeing it in hundreds of other homes, I am just so sick of it I could throw up. In contrast, quartz and other materials like recycled glass, etc come in hundreds of different colors; you can actually get a little individuality with these products, and not look like every other house on the block. (I also happen to love the depth you see in these types of products, where the counter looks 3 dimensional. But that love could change over time and this quality might seem dated.)

Some of these trends are like a popular song; they play it so much that you get sick of it, but then years later you like it again. I think when something is new, it becomes the "must have", and then we get sick of it and want to rebel and go back to the opposite. Like we get sick of color everywhere and go earth tones. But then we get sick of earth tones and go colors. (I've done this with living room accessories, back and forth and back.)

Once the fad dies down, I think some things fade away forever, while other things live on, but just used when it really works or people really like it. So it's not like I think granite will completely disappear. I'm just grateful we're finally getting to the point where you can sell a house that has something other than granite.

This thread has also furthered my opinion that $50-$100k kitchen makeovers with $30k custom cabinets is kind of ridiculous. Much better to spend $30k and then re-do it when everything in it has gone out of style :-)

Beautiful laundry rooms! The one energy efficient appliance that is missing from everyone of these rooms is the clothesline. Where do you dry the comforters, rugs, and other bulky items? I dry jeans and tshirsts for about 10 min in the dryer and then hang them to dry. It keeps your clothes looking new longer and less shrinkage and you get done with the wash quicker. The laundry room sink seems like it is always in use....wash the small pet dog, soak stains from whatever, cleaning something in a deep sink keeps from splattering the water all over. A rod over the dryer is nice for drying something on a hanger, but for items right after ironing, like the built in ironing board, handy to use and store it and the iron, the outlet is installed behine the ironing board too. The laundry room should be near the bedrooms where you create the laundry, but not in the master closet. The kids get older, grandma moves in and needs help or someone comes to visit...do you really want them doing laundry in the master closet? Also consider the flooring, if you have carpet in the closet and a hose breaks or leaks, how long before you notice the damage? The humidity from washing? It would be better installed in the bathroom than the closet. We decorated the wall with a piece of clothesline with britches of when the kids were small to larger sizes as they out-grew and that is cute and reminds me of how much they have grown I will have to add some photos too

Hi Ashton.
Looks like you have a brick wall behind the desk there. If there is no real view outside that window, you can bring the view inside. Brewster makes fun wall murals of skylines and architectural details that are modern and quirky at the same time.
Here is a link... http://www.brewsterwallcovering.com/8-916-penthouse-mural.aspx

I would love to see a skyline on that left inside wall with some great mid-century lighting and office furniture. i recently saw a beautiful mid-century desk at Susanne Hollis in South Pasadena. Her showroom is about 15 minutes away from downtown LA and worth the trip. Here is the desk I saw, it's gorgeous... http://www.susannehollis.com/furniture/desks/fr13129.html

I have a charcol grey comforter, asian style, maybe a light grey? Also, attached to my bedroom is a small room which connects to my bathroom where there is another sink, make up area. I would like to paint that another color which the orange would complement and would flow with nicely. Lynn
